Unhappy 60 Million Containers of Pet Food Recalled After Dog and Cat Deaths

I came in here to post this story because I know so many of us shop at the stores that sell these pet foods.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Here is the link to the full story...

Personal note to Zanny.... I saw your post about your dad's cat and you're the first one I thought of when I read this story... Check with you dad about what food he was feeding it.

Our pet is like one of our kids... It would break my heart if something ever happened like this!

The article said they haven't posted the lot/code numbers yet...
Quote" Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site -- www.menufoods.com/recall -- early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738. " Unquote

Omgosh Suzanne, I'm so sorry to hear this might be the cause!--
Keep your packaging and before you throw your dad's weekly trash out try and remember if any packages may still be in that trash bag..
If nothing else it could help the Vet better understand what might be going on.

it's not just store brands either..
I just found this, which I was afraid of:

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

menufoods.com doesn't even resolve. I suppose it could be fixed by tomorrow, but that's really sloppy. I don't think I have any of this food, but will check. How bad are things when you've been selling something toxic for three months before saying anything?

It's there now. I just know that a web site can't be put up instantly, so I wondered if they were going to bother at all. I had some pouches with the same UPC codes, but not dates. They're still getting tossed.

Thanks so much for the link. I've been feeding the Special Kitty pouches as a treat to my kitty in the evenings. She loves them. Most of the time it's Whiskas or Friskies, but I went to Wal-Mart and bought her about 10 pouches of it. She finished the last one yesterday. I haven't noticed her being sick or anything so hopefully she'll be ok.

What's up with all these recalls? Makes you not want to buy anything!!

Don't toss them!! Take them back to the store and get your money back!! That's still money in their pocket for their mistakes if you toss them! I noticed when the peanut butter was recalled, a lot of people were throwing theirs away. We paid our hard-earned money for these products. So please, everyone, make sure you take your recalled product back to the store and get your money back!!

The dates on my food aren't included in the recall, but in this case the manufacturer was so reticent about releasing info that I'd prefer not to take a chance. I don't imagine these would be refundable but definitely, anyone whose food was included should return it.

What really surprises me is that basically all of the food come from the same place...meaning the expensive food and the cheaper food. So are we just paying more for a label like it was with the peanut butter??

Good Morning All -
Please, Please take this seriously!!! Our beloved cat "Zima" is the latest victim. We were gone last week on vacation and got home Saturday evening (my sister in law was feeding them for us). I noticed that he didn't look so good so i took him to the vet yesterday morning. He's in kidney failure and we will have to put him to sleep this afternoon. The vet had us bring him home last night so that he could be comfortable with us and let the kids say good bye.

I have been buying the Meijer Main Choice sliced chicken dinner (along with a couple of other types) and darn it if the cans I have here are the ones that are being recalled!!!!

We have lab work on our cat from 3 months ago and his kidneys were is perfect shape. I am soooo mad at myself. I am keeping this can of food even though it makes me sick every time I look at it, that way I have proof that I had unfortunately been feeding him this food!

Please, please don't take any chances. We now have to watch our other 2 cats closely.

Cheri :O(

I'm sorry, Cheri

What an awful feeling it must be...thinking you were taking good care of your kitty.
I hope the other two are OK....

Pet Connection is maintaining a database to track the number of sick/deceased pets. If your pet has been affected by tainted food, you may want to use this database.

They also have a blog where people are posting their comments. It's interesting reading.

The news featued a woman who's cat died from the food and she is trying to file a lawsuit for her loss... the report went on to say that although many pet owners are up in arms over the recall, there is little that can be done legally since pets are considered "property" under the law. The reporter went on to report that many lawyers are accepting cases from pet owners who lost animals and are just taking advantage of thier grief and taking their money for retainers and "costs" knowing full well that there is nothing that the pet food company is going to do......

It pretty darn shame of those attorney's to take advantage of them!!! The only thing the pet owners are entitled to are ---the vet bills and the cost of their animal. They are better off just taking it to a small claims court and representing themselves. Giving the magnitude of this recall I would think Menu Foods would go ahead pay this to the owners.
