Question DD constipation problem... HELP!

My 8yr old dd has been to the doctor several times in the last few weeks because her stomach won't quit hurting. They did x-rays and found out she is so backed up that poop is just coming out, and she is having accidents. She doesn't feel it when this is about to happen. We have done perscription laxative powder, and I can't get the strenth or nerve to give her an enima, but has anyone else ever dealt with this problem before? I may have to just have an enema done at the dr's office, but I hate for her to have to do that!

I had a son like this. The only way he went was by emema. I was like you too. I couldn't do it. But my grandma did it and boy was it a relief. Perhaps you have someone that you and her is comfortable with that can do it for you......good luck and hope she is better soon.

Have you tried apple juice? I don't think I've ever had to use it for my kids but sometimes I'll get a craving for it and... look out!

All three of my children have this problem. Actually two of them have been hospitalized for this. Dairy is not a good thing for them while they are having constipation problems. WATER is a great thing. Try a fiber laxative. A lot of fruit also. Enima will definetly make a difference. I hope that helps

My oldest son had this problem at one point....well, the leakage...the accidents that he couldn't seem to tell were coming. He was doing too much "holding it in" because he didn't want to use the toilet at school. The solution we came up with was that he had to sit on the toilet daily, reading or whatever, until he got himself on a schedule that allowed him to go on a regular basis at home. We also tried the fiber, extra water, and other diet mods but forcing him to make time to go seemed to solve it.

My DD had the same problem at that age ... Her Dr gave her a little red pill to help her. I think she took it once or twice a day for 2 days.

A few months later I notice her stools were hard again and she wasn't going as often as she should...So we let her snack on blueberries & rasins..We DID NOT limit her on how much she could eat.. The poor child was in the bathroom for a very very long time.

My son had this problem as well.

He eats a small amount of raisins every morning and now goes on a daily basis. Usually same time every day.

I had this problem my whole life and we tried everything. Finally, when I was pg my Dr. said I could take was Milk of Magnesia. It is the only thing that has worked for me when I am at my wit's end. It is made from magnesium. Ask your Dr. if she can take a magnesuim supplement. It should help quite a bit. I wish I had known this when I was younger.

Good luck. I know from experience that it is terrible.

I would suggest the emena and soon. If the problem is not solved , going to the hospital will be a BIGGER problem when they have to get it out. ( you DONT wanna know how this is done and a emena is lots better and easier than their way) I used to work the e.r and I always HATED it when they brought a child in to have a fecal impaction removed. We ususally had to call up about all the help we could find or sedate the child.
The emena is easy to give and you just have to deal with the embarressment for a short time and then its over.

Yes, littlejo has excellent suggestion as far as getting the impaction removed ASAP.

Then you can try some of the treatments suggested in this thread so that she will not become constipated again. Sometimes kids do not want to stop what they are doing in order to go to the bathroom but sometimes, if constipated, they won't go because it is painful. It becomes a vicious cycle...

Once your child's stools are no longer painful, some of this should work itself out but for now, it would be very important to have the doctor's help.

Prune juice always worked great too. But don't give her too much or she'll get the squirts!

You may want to try a glycerin suppository before the enema, but if she is really impacted I think that the enema is the best way to go. She'll feel better so quick, it will be worth it.

Ok we just did the enema about 40 min. ago, and I hope it worked! I don't know if the impaction part came out (TMI I know!) Her belly still hurts, and I was wondering if we should do one again tonight or maybe again tomorrow, or just wait a while?

My son had a horrible problem with this also. Nothing worked except the enema. He would be in so much pain, he wouldn't refuse to let me give him one. It wasn't pleasant, but it was deffinantly necessary. Thankfully he grew out of it.

The "little red pills" that someone mentioned are stool softeners. They were prescribed to me after I had my c-section and they work wonders! I had a lot of problems with constipation while I was pregnant (darn prenatal vitamins ). Make sure your DD drinks LOTS of water! Have her drink a glass with each meal and snacks. Fresh fruit and vegetables provide much needed fiber! Also look for cereals that are high in fiber (oatmeal, mini wheats, etc.). Dried apricots and prunes work pretty well. Good luck
