Need help with a 3 year old not sleeping?!

My DD was always a great sleeper, slept through the night early, etc.

Lately, I would say the last 3 weeks or so, she has been crying in her sleep off and on from about 9:00 - 11:00, I am constantly going up and down the steps to console her, check on her, etc. I have tried everything I can think of, but nothing works!

We all had the flu about a month ago and it started just after that, so I thought maybe an ear infection, but for THREE WEEKS!?

I don't know what else to do? I haven;t brought her to the doctors, because she has no symptoms of anything except the sleeping problem? I guess it still could be an ear infection?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW the rest of the night she is fine, sleeps usually without a peep. If she does wake up and come in by us, I just tell her it's night time and go back to bed and she does.

I would not have her watch any media after dinner -bedtime and just read to her before bed time. Perhaps she what she is going to bed with is being relived in her sleep.
Also, give her a lavendar bath. J&J makes a child wash with this.
I hope that this passes for her and you.
Take care.

We use white noise in the bedrooms... Both of our kids have a fan turned toward the wall in Winter and toward the bed in Summer.

I know that there are also white noise machines.

I too hope that this phase passes quickly. Losing sleep is hard on everyone.

You know we did use white noise, but sort of gave it up over the summer?! Hmmmm.

I have to say that I am really lucky she isn't getting up after I go to bed, usually I am still awake. SHe just cried a little again, but I didn't even go up, and she must have gone back to sleep.

I just sort of think there is something wrong and she just can't tell me. She said her mouth hurt and the other day she threw up out of the blue. Come to think about it, she has acid reflux, and was on medication (has been weaned off it for 2 years), I wonder if her stomach has been upset for some reason and when she lays down it's worse. (it was like that when she was a baby, she slept in a car seat sitting up until she could crawl out.

I am going to get the fan out tomorrow and make things like they were when she slept through the night, incline the bed, fan, dark room, no nightlight, etc.

This does remind me about how hard having a newborn is, all of that getting up........ and I'm already awake!

I remember the newborn nights ... that's about all I remember since I was so tired then.

Hopefully, with some of those changes, things will get better and she will rest better. Our kids have gone through various stages in their sleep patterns and they do generally work themselves out but it is so hard when you can't figure out what the problem is.

Let us know how it goes!

This may sound stupid but try to give her tylenol an hour before she goes to bed. She could be working on her teeth still, which hurts at night the most. Or she could have an ear infection, you never knew with my daughter about the ear infection, she usually had bad nights also.

Heartburn gets worse when you lay down, maybe she has GERD or her acid reflux has come back.

Yes, I remember it all too well. She cried for the first 6 months of her life non stop, it was the worst time in my life.

Anyway.....I went with this theory tonight and so far, not a PEEP!(knock knock)

We inclined her bed and told her the whole story about when she was little and in her crib how she slept sitting up, so it made it fun for her. I also gave her 2 Tums before bed, we were giving her Mylanta when she was a baby, but I didn't have any of that around anymore. ANd thanks to Cuthie's suggestion, I plugged in the fan, anything is worth the try!

Hopefully we found the problem. When she catches a cold or ahs a post nasal drip, it aggrivates her stomach and I should remember that, just because I don't see the snot doesn't mean it's not there.

Keep your fingers crossed

I just wanted to let everyone know that this is night 5 of not waking up! I can't believe it's working, well something is anyway. The white noise and the inclined bed, something helped, I don't care what.

She only started sleeping laying totally flat when we put her in the big bed, her crib was always inclined. Maybe she still needs that and that's why she's been giving us a bit of a hard time in the bed?

It's great to have you guys help me put things together and figure them out. Funny how you don't see what is right there until someon points it out! Thanks!
