Question Anyone have Arthroscopic knee surgery?

I had arthroscopic knee surgery 4 months ago and I am feeling more pain/stiffness than before the surgery. When it rains or the cold weather hits I can barley walk or move my leg. Every time I get on a stationery bike (or any bike) my knee will pop/make cracking sound. When I walk up steps I still have the same sharp shooting pain run thru my knee that i had before surgery. When I try to do the knee press at the gym I feel sharp pains inside my knee. Where the camera was placed in the right side of my knee I don't have any problems. But the left side where the camera was placed and the plica, and cartilage was removed out of that incision there is a huge knot and swelling. It is painful to do squats now and pivotal movement.

I started therapy 3 days out of surgery. The first time that I felt pain in my knee was when they put on the knee press machine. that is when all of the sever pain started.

Has anyone had arthroscopic knee surgery or known anyone who has had this type of surgery?

Did you have any side effects?

Is this normal?

I kind of wish I did not have this surgery. When I had this done I was told that I would heal fine and no side effects. My pain only consist of sharp pain when walking up an incline/steps and catching sensations on the left side (supp due to the plica catching). I was told he was going to remove just the plica when he org went in and he said that there was cartilage under the knee cap that had to be removed). I pretty much would be back to normal. The doctor has no reasoning for any of the above happening. He is going to do another MRI to make sure nothing went wrong.

I've had four members of my family who have had that surgery since last year! I'm beginning to wonder if it's the 'latest' thing for doctors to do if your knee hurts. Each one is having their own different types of problems since the surgery. One is hurting in a different place and his knee is popping. The doctor says it's scar tissue. One is doing really well. Another who is much older than the others is having a lot of swelling and popping. Still on crutches (it's been over 2 months). The other is having the popping and her doctor says its now arthritis!!!

Now you're basically saying the same thing as all the people in my family. The one who isn't having any problems since the surgery is the youngest (40). The rest are late 50's and up.

I haven't had the surgery myself but I've sure seen the effects of it all around me and yours sounds just like theirs. Good luck to you and I hope you're feeling better soon. I know it must be really frustrating.

DH has had four, two on each knee. Each time a different problem and each time the necessary repairs were a success. The last surgery was over 10 yrs. ago and still no problems. When the weather changes he does have knee aches and pains. However, that is to be expected.

I Had The Total Knee Replacement Back In April Of Last Year Done The Therapy And Had To Go Back In June To Have It Manulapted Where They Break The Scar Tissue Where It Was Stiffen And Swelling. Went Back And Had Two More Months Of Therapy My Leg Still Hurts As Bad Or Worst Than When I Had This Done. Like You Said The Doctor Has No Explanation I Was 44 When I Had This Done I Had Arthitis And The Spurs Would Hurt Really Bad When I Would Bend, Sit Or Walk Like They Were Sticking. Now I Have Arthitis In My Other Knee And They Want To Do Surgery But I Have Put It Off Twice Because The Other Is Not No Better. Maybe You Might Have What They Called Spurs Which Is A Form Of Arthitis. Keep Me Posted I Would Be Glad To Know What The Mri Shows. Good Luck

I've had arthroscopic surgery twice in 20 years on the same knee. The last time (March 2006), mine did exactly what yours did, started popping, hurting worse than before surgery, etc. Finally, he gave me a cortizone shot and it relieved the severe pain. It still hurts when I over do it or when the weather changes but has been better.

I have had a total of seven knee surgeries since 2000. The first one was an open surgery to remove a tumor underneath the knee cap, the next five were arthroscopic to remove debris and/or smooth the area underneath the patella. The last one was an arthroscopic lateral release.

I would love to say my knee feels great but I can't it hurts 95% of the time and wakes me up from sleep. I have done a total of 7 months physical therapy, had cortisone shots, two different rounds of Synvisc, four rounds of Medrol dose packs, steroids, vicodin, Motrin, and a tons of other prescriptions.

My best advice to give you is to get a second opinion, preferably with a younger Dr. There are so many advancements in place that many older Dr's do not know about unless the keep up with their continuing education. I have just recently switched Dr's and am hopeful that the new one can do something for me. Everyone agrees that I am "too young" for a knee replacement because at 36 the best odds I have been given is that the new joint lasts 7 to 10 years and you can have it done twice in a lifetime and I know I will want to be able to walk when I am 56!

Never ever let them go in with a scope "just to look around". I have learned the hard way that each time they enter the joint it is causing damage. They may fix the original complaint, but sure as anything you will have another one.

I wish you lots of luck and I know how awful it is!!

I am waiting for the MRI to be scheduled and then hopefully it will tell something. I am honestly sick of this pain and discomfort.

I have had the surgery twice on my left knee and once on my right. The last round included a tendon release on each knee as well. I have always been very active --took dance for 16 years, taught aerobics for 10 and became a runner in my late 30s. i must say, most of my pain was brought on by my activities -- not very knee friendly. I had my greatest success with this last round of "scopings" and releaing the tendons. I did end up having a series of injections (supartz) on the left. I am soooo much better now.

I wonder how much of your lingering pain could be from scar tissue. It is much less pliable, and can pull on things causing pain. Did your therapist have you massaging those knowt to e"break up the scar tissue". My friend (physical therapist) had me to massage Vit E oil into the scars and try to break down those knots. It really hurt at times, but I did not end up with all of that pain at the incision site. I don't know if this is the answer - but I would definately talk to the therapist as well as the dr. My opinion is that the surgeons are always happy to cut, so I would get more than one opinion.
