My daughter is in two similar programs but they are with Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon. This year she will take the SAT and the ACT. She is 12 and in the 7th grade. I haven't enrolled her in any of the classes.

DD took the SAT in January, and we got a letter from Duke TIP about Summer Courses she can take. So far everyone I have spoken to has had good things to say about it. Does anyone know if it is a recruiting thing??? As in, trying to catch them at an early age and give them the "DUKE" bug??? kwim??? thanks.

Yes it is legitimate. Is it worth the $25 fee to enroll? We didn't think so. For the last two years (4th & 5th Grade) my daughter has been eligible to participate, so that is an honor in itself, but in reading the literature, there wasn't any tangible benefit for writing that check. There were two other children in my daughter's grade that accepted and the only thing they received was a certificate at the end of the year assembly. To us, $25 was better spent elsewhere.

My oldest was part of the Johns Hopkins program. We never paid anything for the program; but we also never participated in the costly summer program offerings. They sounded great, but very, very expensive - more than we could justify. Taking the real SAT twice before high school is a valuable experience. cj/ |

The $25 is to receive their special newsletter and resources or something...but you don't have to join and pay $25. I believe you can still participate without the "extras." |

DD also got accepted into Duke last year ( 4th grade ), there were only 4 students total in the school that scored high enough. She was 1 of the 4. They are starting the SAT in the morning for this year ( April 02 ), I'm so hoping she scores well on it. I have BIG plans for her and college. My DD has said since she was in the 1st grade she wanted to be a zoologist.. I also got something in the mail last week about a summer college prep camp in TN . I didn't really read all of it, but the cost is pretty high, 2600.00 for 6 weeks On campus/ meals included. Me and DH have talked a little about this, but I dont know if we can come up with that kind of money in 5 weeks .( School lets out here in 5 weeks. )... I 'm so PROUD on my DD and her grades, She really is a great student and she studies hard/ A/B honor roll or either A honor roll since she was in 1st grade. I have never heard of any other colleges accepting a young middle schooler. maybe it's different state to state.

I am a 5th grade teacher. There are programs like this all over the country. It is based on the standardize test that your child takes in school. It is to identify students who score high and then offer summer classes. Some students take the SAT which further identifies students that will do well in college.

I did this when I was in the 7th grade (I'm fixing to turn 30 this summer to give you a time reference I didn't do any of the camps or classes or anything but I took the ACT that year (in Alabama this is the standardized test kind of like the SAT). I think it made me a little more confident when I got to high school and took the test again. I had taken the test already, had an idea of what was on it, and knew that I had covered a lot more of the material that was on the test since I was in the 7th grade.I think it is a pretty good thing as long as you don't go overboard and push the child too hard. I've seen some parents push and push. Don't get me wrong, my parents expected me to do good on my schoolwork, but they didn't go to extremes. |

My daughter participated in this program last year. She took the SAT at 12 - and did very well - She received a medal from Duke for her score and has been able to particiapte in programs sponsered by Duke and other area colleges. Duke has invited her to their campus this summer and is keeping tabs on her progress - she wants to go to Medical School - to be a Bilingual Pediatrician . It is sooo worth the $25 .

My son took the SAT in 7th grade with the Duke. It was humbling for him - he never knew there was so much more math to learn. He did okay on the Language part though. We do get invitations to expensive day camp programs, but none are very close to where we live. I'm neutral about the whole experience. I'm not sure how he feels. My daughter took an 8th grade test while in 4th, with TIPS. I felt better about the kids being watched - it was just elementary school. For the Duke, he went to a local high school, with all of the big kids. With TIPS, the results they provided were not very useful, you were directed to a web site to read through and compare. |
