What I would do is look at other yard sale ads in the newspaper that I will be placing an ad. + Use eye catching terms like: Gently used baby items instead of Baby items + I do not advertise in the newspaper because it is around $30 to place an ad. Instead what I do is put out quality, eye catching YARD SALE signs. Fortunately, I live off of a busy street so there is a lot of traffic. I get a lot of favorable comments about my eye catching signs. + Envision this ... Fluorescent orange paper that has a bold black letter the size of the paper (8˝" x 11") on each sheet. YARD $ALE ---> All affixed to a sturdy sign that is tied to a pole. + You cannot help but notice it. + I sell 2-liters (3 / $2.00) at my year sales. I had soooo many that I lined the driveway (both sides, like a runway, leading up to the yard sale) with 2-liters. Eye catching, the only problem is that heat can get to the 2-liters. + Terence in Brook Park, OH |

I never advertised my stockpile, but it was always the first thing that sold! I was thinking of having a yard sale this year and wondering how I would do without putting it in the paper? It's about $20 to advertise it and that sounds like a lot when you don't have any big ticket items to sell. I do have a major town about 2 miles away and I can put lots of signs up, good easy to follow ones like Terry mentioned, they're cheaper than $20.

Oh no, not a major city, a major TOWN. NYC is about an hour away, that's the closest thing as far as city. We live in the sticks! ![]() We do get a lot of travelers from the city, going to the Poconos.

I usually wait until our annual neighborhood garage sale because they pay for the newspaper advertising, but some years I also do my own either the week before or the week after the neighborhood sale. This year I am doing it the week before. (We are replacing the counters in our kitchen so I need a lot of money. I figure I can fill up the garage and sell a lot of the "better" stuff the first week then throughout the following week I'll look for more items to sell. But with the high traffic of the neighborhood sale, even my not-so-wonderful stuff should sell.) I am in a neighborhood off of a busy 2 lane road so it is easy to get people to come in when you have signs they can see before they have to slow down. That gives them a few seconds to decide whether or not they are going to turn down the street. So I use large poaster board with big letters, but I think the most important thing is several brightly colored balloons on strings so they move around in the breeze. That will catch a person's attention so they are focused on the sign as they approach it. I don't bother putting my address on the signs....I just have signs directing them to my home with arrows. I need them to go straight at the first stop sign so I even put a sign with an arrow pointing up (for straight ahead) to keep them going the right way. And on each of those signs I write some of the more impressive things I have to keep them moving toward my home. I have been complimented many times because it was so easy for people to find my sale. As for my stockpile, I just write "Many NEW Items" and people will often come in asking what new items I have. But the most important thing....remove the signs when you are done! Nothing irks a neighbor more than having to remove your garage sale sign from the stop sign on their property 3 days after it has ended. The next year they might even remove the sign before your sale is done and that wouldn't be good for your profits! Last edited by MyKidsMom; 04-04-2007 at 06:54 PM. |

Other than that if you can not afford the paper is put signs up all around your area, which has already been suggested. |

The sign at the start of my driveway (measuring 36" wide x 22" high) is the identical twin located at the end of the street (attracting customers). Fortunately, the signs are only five houses apart. + I do include the street address on the end of the street sign. The ballon idea is a very good idea (anything to get the attention of passing vehicles). + During the course of the yard sale I check to see if all signs are still up and working. + Terence in Brook Park, OH |

I usually list coupon items as "pantry surplus" in the newspaper ad.
