Tell us about your job!

I know that so many of you have jobs outside of the home and some work at home.

Me... I have an online business (when I feel like it!) and am a non-domestic goddess.

What do you do for a living?

I am a college recruiter for a family of schools with locations all over the US and Canada. All of the majors are creative. I visit high schools and talk to students as well as GED centers and adult learning classes. Adults get very interested often in our culinary programs. I have a home office which is great sometimes but I have to explain to folks that when they call me my two year old will probably be home and he will want to let them know he is here. I live in my car (which is paid for by the school). I am on the road 9 months of the year and during the off season I work on special projects and get ready for my fall presentations. I got a promotion on Halloween (not much money but a new title lol) which added the responsiblity of creating a monthly newsletter sent via email to 175+ people. My father was a typesetter for over 30 years so while I have no formal training I guess I have some experience though helping him for many years. I do it online in Publisher and then create a PDF file so everyone can read it. So far it has received very nice feedback.

I often have to work nights and some weekends. It drives my husband nuts because I do more than I need to as I want to be in the top 16 so I can make it to President's Club. This year they are going to Puerto Rico. I am currently one of the top 3 reps in the country.

I also take care of my son who goes to day care during the day . . . He has gone since he was 5 months old (my leave ended the day before our off season so I was able to stay at home with him extra time). He loves it and it is nice because it gives me a break sometimes . . . My mom has been dead for 12 years and my mother in law was a sick woman before she died last summer so there really is no family to help us . . . I want to send him to Jewish day school but the one I would use is not close and does not have flexible hours.

I love what I do . . . I am so blessed.

Maddy

I've worked in restaurants (serving, bar tending, hostessing, managing) for 20 years. I started doing it so that we wouldn't need a sitter for the kids. Now that they are grown, I continue doing it because the money is crazy! I have switched from nights to days now that there is no need to be home with the kids. I work about 25 hrs a week.

I love the fact that my hard work is rewarded immediately and (almost always) accordingly. I've have more "prestigious" jobs, but none of them pay the money. As I age, I prefer the hostessing/managing aspect, but I still love serving as that's where the money is.

I am a registered nurse. I work 11pm-7am in an 8 bed post op unit. I take care of patients who need to stay overnight (up to 23 hours post-op) for pain, nausea control and observation. As the only RN with an aide on the shift I can have no more than 6 patients and it is wonderful. I feel that we are able to give very good care, pay attention to all of their needs and most of all, keep them comfortable and allow them to sleep. We have a lot of military soldiers who are returning from overseas and I take special pride in taking extra care with them. I even had to take pictures with one guy's cell phone of him laying in bed eating pudding so the he could send it to his girlfriend in California. He thought that it was so funny that he was in the hospital getting waited on and wanted her to be jealous!

I work Mon-Fri. nights and I hate it. I have 4 kids, 2 are still at home. 2 of the kids have a lot of medical problems and keep me very busy with their doctor appointments and sometimes it is hard wtih needing to sleep during the day but the money is great. I am trying to get a day job in another unit but I have had 2 back surgeries in the past 2 years and have to be careful about the type of patients and duties that I need to do.

I love my job as far as the care I give, the patients I take care of and the impression that we make on them. I would love to be a full time domestic godess but since that is not in the plans for now, I guess that I have a great job for my life.

I was finishing my teaching degree while pregnant with DS #1. When it was time to look for a full-time job, he was only 3 months old so I continued to stay home. I continued to have my chidlren (4 children total in just over 6 years) and never did go back full-time. DH has a hectic schedule, so it was easier if I stayed home most of the time. I continued to keep a substitute certificate and worked VERY little for the last 12 years. When youngest DS started school last year, I began to work a little more.

I do not plan to go back to teaching full-time. I may look for something else part-time during the day. I hate to because the hours of subbing are perfect and I like the job. I just can't deal with the inconsistancy and the lack of "acknowledgement". If teaching is a thankless job, subbing is worse. It's like no one cares if I am there or not until they NEED someone at 8:00 AM and I am unavailable. Also, our principal does strange things that make me feel unneccessary. (ie. I am in on Mon. and the same teacher is out Tues., he calls someone else. I have the same class 2 times for 3-4 days each time. The teacher is out again and tells me that she is sorry I counldn't come in this time. Umm..I wasn't asked. She was surprised.)

Anyway...I am good at my job, love the kids and the hours, the pay is OK, etc. BUT...I may need to leave for my self-esteem! LOL

I am a Technology Specialist for the school board here. I work at a local elem school very close to my house. I'm the resident computer geek at my school. Basically if it plugs in, I have to worry about it. I was promoted to the job after about 7 years in the classroom as a Teacher Assistant. I love my job, and I still get to see the kids when I go into the classrooms to work.

I love my job but the pay really stinks. I have 3 bosses that are constantly expecting things of me and when they are all together it gets really complicated. I have to do all the running of the errands, making sure everything is within their grasp so they don't go postal, I get meals for them, I have to take care of the "office" to make sure it is properly cleaned and everything has to be in order.

I also answer phone calls and deal with customers for the big boss, schedule appointments, drive 2 of my bosses around town to their functions. I make sure that everyone gets to where they need to be on time. I even have to clean the toilet for petesake!!! Couldn't they just hire a cleaning lady???? I take care of these people in so many different ways that I don't even know if they realize it. I even have to do laundry. I take care of them when they are ill. I listen to them argue and bicker at what you would think would be the convention of the year the way they go on and on

Oh and I have to listen to their personal lives also, it is always all about them There are so many other things that I could list here as to what I do but I will spare you "ALL" the details let's just say the big boss expects alot!!!

I am a:

Secretary
Guidance Counselor
Taxi Cab Driver
Maid
Childcare Giver
Nurse
Drill Sargeant
Peace keeper
Teacher
ATM
Daughter
Mother
Sister
Wife

I am a SAHM!!! I wouldn't trade it for anything. I feel lucky.

I do learning support for 4th, 5th and 6th grade. My primary focus being 5th grade. I absolutely love my job. Only being a wife and Mom is more fulfilling. The hours are perfect. I leave for school 5 minutes after my youngest catches the bus and I get home 5 minutes before he gets home. I have off when the kids have off. I work in the same school district as my kids but at a different school. My commute is under 5 minutes.

I am a substitute teacher. I work 3-5 days a week. I also watch two young girls after school. The subbing pay isn't great, but I only live 10 minutes from the High School I sub at, and it allows me to be able to be home when my daughter gets off the school bus. I am lucky that my mother in law drops my daughter off at school for me in the mornings. Having my summers off is an added plus!

I'm a Customer Service Rep for the I.R.S. You can imagine how busy we are this time of year! My hours are odd, but great for us. I work 4 days a week from 10 to 8:30 at night. Off every Wend. So I'm home in the morning to get the kids off to school and DH is home at night. He gets a break from dinner and homework on Wend.

I have, in my opinion, the best job in the world! I teach ancient history...I know what you are thinking...boring. Yes, it can be, and when I was in elm. and h.s. I hated history. So I decided I was going to change that for my self and the 175 - 200 student I reach. All notes are in animated and music coordinated powerpoint. The student do a supervised archaeological dig, design and creat their own life-size Egyptian sarcophogus, creat a terracotta army figure, etc., etc. I teach 6th. grade, and teach them how to do a research paper that is about 25 - 40 pages. It is all done in school an must be done by them. I also teach night classes and summer workshops sometimes on teacher development. This is a place where I get to spend my entire day with children. I love them and started out with them having crushes on me, went to being like their moms, and now am in their grandma's age range. I wouldn't do anything else ....except maybe be a professional shopper. This is my job, my career, and may passion. This after my family is the most important thing to me that makes me feel good about myself. I don't want to break my arm patting myself on the back, but I regularly am asked by other teacher and school districts to teach my manner of teaching, requested by parents for their children, have all or almost all the special needs children in my class, and was even chosen to work two summer ago at the Smithsonian Institute's Indian museum in Washington, D.C.

I do part time data entry for the USPS. It's such an easy, mindless job which is just what I want! I like the extra money so I don't feel guilty when we order out or if I buy a Yankee candle...

I am a Production Coordinator. I #1 have to approve all printed work before it goes to be inserted. #2 I approve the work before it leaves our building and goes to the post office. #3 I am the communication liason between the team I work for and the entire Production areas. #4 I trouble shoot any problem in any of the 6 Production departments that come up. If I can fix it, I do if I can't then I take it upstairs to the team and they fix it. #5 I double check all paperwork that is sent down to the Production departments and fix errors and let the offender know so that they don't happen again. IE I proofread what the college graduates can't do.

I enjoy my job because my boss leaves me alone. He trusts me to do my job and does not bother me unless I have a problem. I do not like my pay and it is only slightly better pay than McDonald's.

For the past 6 years I have owned and operated a Personal Assistant/Errand Service. I really enjoy it because I have clients of different ages, backgrounds, and business interests. My days are never the same and since I am easily bored, I love having a variety of tasks. Some of the tasks and projects that I have worked on this week:

* Accompany a senior to a Dr. appointment
* Grocery shop for several clients
* Assist an artist with some production work
* Research display ad prices of local newspapers for non-profit entity
* Purchase and deliver office supplies and Costco run
* Assist in office of Commercial Real Estate business
* Obtain appraisals on several antiques

And - I have the best boss ever!

Well, I'm not exactly sure what my specific job title is, but I work in the corporate office of a Rent to Own dealer. I do payroll, accounts payable, I'm the health insurance administrator, the 401(k) administrator and new employee trainer. I have 2 big bosses (the owners), 2 'smaller' bosses (district managers) and 12 stores that I do lots of work for..making certificates, flyers, postcards, business cards, ordering office supplies, entering inventory, dialing into any of the stores and fixing the problems they create (that's a daily occurance!), answer the phone no less than 300 times a day , daily accounting transactions as well as closing out the month in our accounting software. I have been here for 16 1/2 years and the owner's treat me like gold. Every year at my review (which lasts all of 2 minutes ) they always tell me 'they have no idea what I do but I'm doing a great job and keep it up and here's your raise'! Um, okey dokey!!

I am a Dental Assistant at a Prison. I do lots of odd and end things other than assist. I'm basically an assistant, office mananger, receptionist and sterilization person all wrapped into one! LOL I'm responsible for LOTS of paperwork and things like tool control, safety, etc. I really love my job and I have great hours, 6:45a - 3:15p.

I guess mine is a little different.

I am an engineering manager for a large technology-based company doing microprocessor development. I typically have 15-20 engineers (computer or electrical BS, MS or PhD) and college interns on the team. On the plus side, the work is challenging, the engineers a great bunch, and the pay is excellent. On the down side, the stress level is a bit high, it's not something I'm terribly passionate about (except for winning....I do like to win), and I don't really feel like I'm adding value to society at large.

I work 8-4 with every other weekend. Something different every day happens there.

I work for a national health insurance company, selling group plans to small businesses. I started in the billing/accounting dept and moved into sales, which I love! It is a challenge to help small business owners offer good but affordable insurance to their employees, which helps them retain skilled, loyal employees. I get to travel from MN to Arizona about 4 times a year, which I love!

I am also a single parent to two daughters and grandparent to one baby girl!!

I love this thread! It is so interesting to hear what everyone is doing.

Me - I just went back to work full time after 10 years of part time. I work in governement and enjoy my work, but don't like the Politics (of which there is alot).

I have 2 elementary school kids and have the same deal as some have mentioned - leave 2 minutes after the bus leaves in the morning and arrive home 2 minutes before they come home. I'm not sure my kids realize I work all day!!

For all the teachers who may feel unappreciated, please know there are some moms who have great appreciation and respect, even if they don't say it with words....

I have 2. 1 full time one part time.

I work part time as a Vet Tech at a small animal hospital. Love working with animals but really hate seeing the stupidity of people. The excuses and things I see at this place amaze me. It really amazes me that people actually think we are naive enough to believe their stories. On the other hand though there are some really great owners who treat their animals like they are family.

At my full time job I work in Administration for a Yacht Club. I have my own office with a view of the water. I have the title of do it all. I answer phones, make appointments, make sure the big boss is reminded of what she needs to do, I do harbor projects, greet members, help with social functions, I do a ton of paperwork, I help direct boats to moorings and slips. Get to play on a cb radio lol. But I really love my job. I work 10 months out of the year and get a 2 month break from Dec-Feb.

I work in retail. I started out 11 yrs ago as a regular sales associate and worked my way up to assistant department manager and eventually moved on to be a full time department manager of the toy department. I actually love my job. It cracks me up when parents come in looking for something and they have no clue what it is. Just hearing them try to describe it is so funny sometimes. Sad thing is 9 times out of 10 I know excatlly what they're talking about.

I'm a SAHM w/ four kids-ages 5-16. I am planning on a career one of these days, but only have an associate's degree so I definitely need to get back in school soon-can't decide what's best for me though-nursing school or getting my degree to teach would only take two years, but I would really like to be a licensed clinical social worker-but that would require 4more years of school and I'm just not sure I have it in me-kwim? With four kids, I think nursing would be awesome w/ the flexibility and the pay is great. With being a teacher, the pay is not so great, but it would be awesome to have all the holidays/summer breaks as my kids. I guess I should figure this out real soon....

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist!

I got into it after Hurricane Katrina took my other job from me. Now my job is portable! All I have to do is grab my table and evacuate! I LOVE my job! I never thought I could love working so much! I make my own hours, so if my DD has a school activity, I just mark myself out and I don't have to answer to anyone. The lady that owns the shop I work out of only requires a percentage of what I take in, so I never have to worry about coming up with rent if it's slow. The pay is great and I get better than good tips. I usually am there from 9:30am to 5:00 or 6:00pm depending on if I have a client or not, sometimes I leave at 2 or 3 if it's slow. I don't work major holidays. My schedule is usually Tuesday thru Saturday (and Saturday is only a half day).

I am a blackjack Pit Boss. I guess I am one of those mean looking people standing behind the blackjack games in a suit watching everyones moves....LOL. I love my job for the most part. But I am on my feet all day long and being 7 months pregnant this gets a little tiresome. The biggest thrill is still seeing someone just buy into the game thousands and thousands at a time. I just stand back and am thinking, "Wow, that person just lost $15,000!" Eeek!

I am a certified dental assistant for almost 19 years. I just went back to school and after a state test in May, I hopefully will be a registered dental assistant! I work three days a week and love my patients ~ well, most of them anyways!

I am a Nurse Practitioer with a Specialty in Gerontology (Geriatrics). I work in Sub-Acute Rehab and Long Term Care. Have been doing it for 10 years. Previously I was in College Student Services working in Residence Life. Got out of that because I got so sick of students pulling fire alarms, destroying the buildings and having Keg Parties. It's fun when you are a student but stinks when you have to clean up the mess.

I'm tech support for a web host. The pay is good for what I do, but the job is truly dull. I'm also the only female in my department on my shift, so I seem to do a lot of taking care of people.

I also work in a casino (slots) and one of my good friends is a pit boss and I tease her all the time about "the Look". I will see her watching a game and she will just have this intensely mean look on her face. She is really a sweetie but when doing her job and concentrating on following the play, she looks like she does't trust anyone.
I have worked for the same casino for over 18 years and like you, for the most part really enjoy my job. I have watched people wager more than the balance of my mortgage in one day and not sweat it. I don't think even if I had the money I could do that. But that's just me.

Private Investigations. It's amazing the things you can find out about people, thanks to the "world wide web".

I have two jobs.

Job #1: Cosmetologist (cut, snip, clip, color, wax, perm, set, etc)

Job #2: Medical Transcriptionist

I know that combo sounds odd, but I worked in transcription for 10 years, then went to college for Executive Secretarial Science and went back to doing transcription. Then, I went to college for cosmetology to get my license and got a part time job doing hair. AND the schedule that both jobs provide, make it so much easier on my life since my 'priority and real' job is being a Mom & wife. Kinda funny too, cause I get all the gossip in the hair biz and truly learn something factual in the medical field everyday. And I love doing both! ~Just wish the pay was better!

I am a RN in an acute rehab unit of a community hospital. I love my job! I work 3 days a week from 7 pm to 7 am. The unit I work in has 11 beds. I usually have any where from 2-6 patients and work with another RN and an aide. Most of our patients have had strokes or joint replacement surgery. They stay in our unit from a week to 6 weeks depending on the rehabilitation that they need. The best part of my job is that my pateints get well and go home! It is bittersweet because I really get to know people very well who are there for long periods of time. When they are independent enough to go home, I feel proud and happy for them but I also feel like I am saying goodbye to a family member or friend! Another benefit to this job is the hours that I work. It allows me to be home everyday when my kids get home from school. I sleep while they are at school. I have shared custody of my kids and I work on opposite weekend and nights that I have them. I couldn't imagine working a m-f 9-5 job anymore! I feel like I work parttime and get fulltime pay.

To quote airbornearmywife, "I am a fifth grade teacher." And she's right...there isn't much more to say! But, I love it! My first degree was in journalism and I did the newspaper/radio gig for a while. When my son came along, I went back for my degree in elementary ed. This is SO much more rewarding, and I really enjoy what I do. HA! I say that as I'm on spring break. Check back with me on May 1st!

I am in radiographer...which means I am an X-ray Technologist. I get to take pictures of people all day. I love my job! I work 4 10 hour shifts at a local hospital. I do diagnostic x-ray as well as CT. I will soon be certified in mammography as well. It is lots of fun and everyday is different!!

My husband and I own a private ambulance service in New Jersey. Right now due to my health I am a "silent" partner, but I do the billing from home. My DH has had his hands full as we are short EMT's and he has been working the road ALOT.

DH worked for this company for 5 years before the opportunity came up to buy it, at a ridiculous low price..so we jumped in knowing we are young enough to bounce back. We are going strong after 7 years.

We provide emergency and non-emergency ambulance transportation, as well as wheelchair transportation. The majority of our work is out of nursing homes.

I'm a speech therapist/supervisor in a hospital outpatiet pediatric therapy clinic. I spend more time supervising than I do being a therapist now. Most days it is rewarding but some days there are difficult cases you can't stop thinking about. That's when I come home and hug my kids! After 17 years I've noticed it's not as easy to get up from the floor when I working with kids!

I just finished a 30 year tour of duty at a manufacturing facility that produces Autolite Spark Plugs. The majority of the years there were spent on the assembly line. Because of those years my body aches and I'm sure I've breathed in enough chemicals to build an atomic bomb. Truthfully it was alot of fun and when I spent the last couple of years on the dock doing shipping and receiving, it weaned me into my retirement. Now that Honeywell (the company that owns the place) is going to close this facility and move everything to Mexico, it truly saddens me because of all the people that gave many years to that place in hopes of getting to retirement will now have to start over somewhere else.

After a month of retirement, I found out that I didn't know how to stay home and at 48 was far too young to start learning. I set out to find another job. I ended up working in advertising sales at a newspaper here in town that is a "free paper" and delivers to every doorstep in town and 5-7 miles surrounding the town. We strictly do "good news" and do a Wednesday and Sunday edition every week. Our slogan is, "We're free because we want to be". It is a small office with about 10 people and it is a dream come true. Also on Wednesdays, my husband and I deliver 300 newspapers in our neighborhood. We use a golf cart and hang papers on hooks on mailboxes since it is considered a rural route. It is our Wednesday date with each other every week.
