Unhappy heartworm help

Hi,
One of our dogs was diagnosed with heart worms yesterday. I was wondering about other people experience with the treatment. I don't want to put him through any unneeded pain as he has been through a lot in his 2 1/2 years. He was severely beaten as a puppy and spent a lot of time at the vet and going back and forthe to the vet for the next 6 months
Thanks for any help.
Judy

I am truly sorry to hear this :-( Did your vet give you any hope that with treatment he will overcome the heartworms?

My father in law's dog had to be put to sleep because of heartworms, but in his case the dog had stopped eating and was beyond help.

I hope things will work out for you and your doggie.

What was the prognosis when you found out the diagnosis? A lot of people think heartworms are the end however they have come a long way in treating them.

First and foremost they can be very expensive to treat. If you are unable to do this please find a rescue or someone willing to take this dog in and care for it. A lot of people don't give them that chance. Now if you talk to a well respected vet they should be able to give you a treatment outline and expense and what needs to be done to get this taken care of. I have never had a problem with heartworms but my mother in law has a dog that had them when she got him and had them treated and he is doing very well now although I do not know the method they used. It should not be painful to treat.

I do wish you the best of luck and for the poor doggy I hope he feels better soon. If you do treat him make sure you keep him on heartworm preventative all year round from then on out (heartguard). Good luck and keep us posted

One of our dogs had heartworms and it is expensive to treat. She was a stray we found and decided to keep when no one claimed her. We DID have her on monthly heartworm medication but it didn't work, we had the heartworms treated, I think it was about $500-600 (years ago). Started on the heartworm meds again, several months later she got them again. We had been giving her the monthly medication, the vet vouched for that when he talked directly to the company that made the heartworm medication and the company agreed to pay for the second treatment. So she was treated a second time and stayed heartworm free until she died, she was about 9 years old, and they did say she wouldn't live as long as a normal small dog (and she didn't) because of it.
