| Books for 9-10 y/o girls
I am wanting to try and start a mother daughter book club in late summer..My daughter will be ten. I'm looking for suggestions for books which aren't too long but also have some good "meaning" to them. Examples would be books that help build moral character, self esteem etc or books on famous people etc..Much thanks for any suggestions.. |

When I was a girl I loved the Trixie Belden mysteries. Trixie Belden Books It was better than Nancy Drew to me. Trixie lived with her brothers and parents and dog in the country and her best friend Honey Wheeler lived in a mansion next door with her adopted brother who Trixie had a crush on forever. No sex, swearing, or anythning like that. Maybe corny and old fasioned but I don't think so for the age you mentioned. It gets girls to daydreaming. They get in just enough danger without getting hurt and they solve some mysteries. I still have mine in my Mom's attic. I love them!!! I loved the "Little House on The Prairie" books of course and all the Louisa May Alcott ones. Also "Caddie Woodlawn" was a favorite.

Just my 2 cents, but I would think that Junie B. Jones might be too easy for 9-10 y.o.'s. At my dd's school only 1st and maybe some 2nd graders are allowed to check those books out of the library. My 8 y.o. likes to read Babysitters Club Mystery books, and also any books by Andrew Clements, she has read all of those and really likes them. What about the Lemony Snickets books, my niece likes those? |

my oldest daughter just turned 9 and she loves Magic tree house books, My America books, Cam Jansen books, Cul-de-Sac Kids books, and American Girl books. I also second the Trixie Belden books, MUCH better than Nancy Drew I thought. I've been working on getting the whole set for my girls I think in a year or two she'll be ready to start reading them.

I have taught students in that age group for a long time. Several years ago, I bought a few books in a series called "Dear America," . Each book was about a girl who lived during a particular time in America's history. They were all historically correct, and reflected the values and issues that surrounded the times. I always have a waiting list for students who want to check them out when others get finished. Hope this helps... |

My duaghter will be 11 in the Fall. She is a major reader and pretty advanced for her age which is hard. She has read everything that was mentioned except the historical books. We were in Target looking for books to take on vacation this week and it is sad that the only books she hasn't read are geared for more HS girls. I refuse to let her get books about who wants what boy and all that goes along with that. We laughed because we decided that between both of us we had read all the books that they had that were appropriate for us. We both read quickly and a lot! This is a problem, not a lot of quality books for that age group that will hold their interest and are morally sound. |
