Unhappy Just found out our baby is lactose intolerant

We thought our daughter just had a flu bug but today we found out from the dr that she is lactose intolerant. She is 6 months old. Was wondering if anyone knew of anyone that got older and was no longer lactose intolerant. And I was also hoping to get some opinions of lactose free baby formulas. We have been using good start since birth..
Thank you
Sherry

be glad they caught it now.. Keaton is 2 and they just now found it.. He wasn't able to hear for the first two years of his life. I also was lactose intolerant and grew out of it ( I still cannot stand milk though..)
Her doctor should be able to give you some idea on formulas..

Both of my kids were lactose intolerant when they were infants ..once they got off baby formula they were fine. They could drink 2% or lowfat milk without any problems...but whole milk seem to give DD a upset stomach.

DD (19) still has some trouble with heavy dairy products..She will get a upset stomach if she eats really rich ice cream or things that is loaded with lots of cheese.

I wanting to say they were both on Similac Isomil formula--but that was so many years ago i really can' say for sure

My lactose intolerant baby did well on soy formula.

We used the Carnation Soy Formula until I found Walmart's Brand... I think it is called Parent's Choice (it's been awhile now!)?

Nutrition forumulation is same as others, cheaper, and our baby thrived on it.

Do you know for sure it is lactose intolerant or milk protein intolerant -- the two are sometimes confused, but they are different. My DS#2 was milk protein intolerant, but grew out of it. We had him on soy, but he developed a soy allergy as well -- this is very common. After many tests, our gastroenterologist told us to try milk again (but 1% or 2% instead of whole milk). He said we would know right away if he would tolerate it or not. My DS is now almost 4 still can not tolerate anything with a lot of milk fat (whole milk, rich ice cream, etc.), be he is fine with 2% milk and other low fat dairy products.

Also, lactose intollerence can be temporary and occur when children get sick. My oldest DS often has this. Now we know to eliminate any milk and milk products from his diet when he starts to get sick.

My oldest is Lactose Intolerant. She wasn't as a baby though, started around 7 years old. She was complaining of belly aches constantly. I experimented with taking milk products out of her diet and she seemed to improve. I asked her MD about it and he said we'll let's get her tested to find out for sure. Duh. Didn't know you could get TESTED for it! Would have saved us a lot of hassle if I'd asked first!

She failed the test with flying colors! She was very lactose intolerant. Now at ten years old we have figured out that she can get away with a little...like cheese on pizza, or grilled cheese, but not in the same day...one small serving of a dairy product a day does not cause her problems. She cannot drink milk at all, instant belly ache.

Why am I telling you this? I haven't got a clue! I guess to say I don't know for sure you can outgrow it, but I know you can grow into it so to speak! Did your Dr. recommend a formula?

Wink

My littleboy is 6 months old. We have been thru the ringer with formulas! At first he started with Enfamil, then Prosobee, now Nutramigen. Of course the expensive one thats hard to find. He was spitting up more than he was holding down. He's doing alot better now. We tried rx strength Zantac (didn't make a difference), we tried everything. He's gaining weight, very happy, so he's doing good. But I'm hoping we're not looking at a lifetime of tummy troubles. Lactose intolerance has never been mentioned to me. I hope not! Donna

Hurm.

Lactose Intoleranace, to me, was supposed to be kind of rare. Apparently, we have a lot of 'rare' here

A lot of times, LI is a misdiagnosis of milk allergy. I'd treat LI like a milk allergy, and avoid all milk products. (but thats my biased opinion)

Soy is quite abundant, and is found at more and more health food stores and local groceries. And once the diet is free of dairy, things work out well (IMO).

Need help with foods that are DF (dairy free?) PM me. I can safely say I know a lot about it

As for formulas -- There is the soy based and there are the hypos Alimentum and Nutramigen (which are more expensive, of course...). And if those don't work there ARE elementals (that are not worth talking about right now)

PS - Sign up for coupons etc for the hypos if you go that route!

Enfmail Nutramigen and Similac's Alimentum (RTF!) are the hypos that are OTC (over the counter)

I'd recommend Similac first, but Im partial towards it

Their website lets you sign up for coupons, et al...

https://welcomeaddition.com/joinnow.aspx

You can look to see if anyone is selling coupon checks on ebay or craigslist.. I had good luck with them when I needed them.

But more importantly, you CAN (and we did *2) get your insurance company to cover the hypoallergenic formula (or beyond...).

Heck, we had it covered while our DD#3 was on it for 15 mths (and no solids) along with zantac for reflux...

If reflux is there too, I'd rec. Alimentum RTF. But I'm no doc - just a BTDT parent

PM me for more info if need be

jason

Thumbs up

For those of you with children that are lactose intolerant, have you tried Digestive Advantage by Ganeden Biotech? It works wonderfully.

Congratulations! You've Found Relief Beyond Belief.

Scroll the page all the way to the right side and there's a place to request samples. I buy the adult pills (they're tiny & very easy to swallow) at Wal-Mart for $7.62. I've also bought the pills on eBay.

At the ripe old age of 4 my son was diagnosed with several food allergies including milk, corn, soy, and wheat. He is TRUELY allergic to milk. He gets the mucus overload!!! As a young child he had constant ear infections and tubes placed in the ears. He STILL cannot have milk at 18. I just developed lactose intolerance myself at 38 and have found out that as we get older, this is not uncommon. With my son's allergies it was almost impossible. I used rice or almond milk. He can have wheat now, and limited amounts of corn. But NO MILK. He does okay with chesse though so go figure.
