Please don't do this. I work for a web host, which means I spend ages online looking at web sites I wouldn't choose to visit otherwise. Even without touching the illegal stuff, there are literally hundreds of creepy fetishes and sexual peculiarities out there. The actual child porn and hate sites are stomach turning, Having to interact with someone who wants to have sex with a three year old, or smash a black person's face in is even worse -- and when I deal with them, it's only in the context of tech support. I don't have to fake sympathy or collusion, I can just turn them into our Abuse department. The material you would be looking at is pretty horrifying, and it isn't legal. Regardless of how it got there, you don't ever want to take your computer in for an upgrade and get called in by the police because a tech found images of little girls in lingerie in its cache. You don't want to risk your kids stumbling upon that stuff, or have your computer showing in the stats these sites collect. I know you wouldn't be seeking out dirty pictures, but typical porn sites are full of banner ads, tracking cookies, and even malware. Your computer doesn't deserve that. Nor do you deserve to get to the point where you become numb to bad things because you've seen worse. You don't need to go around suspecting strangers of ill intent because you've seen what some creeps can do online. If you're worried about what your kids might see online, invest in filtering software, or edit your computer's hosts file to block MySpace and known adult sites and ad banners. That last suggestion would be only for those who are quite technically inclined. Please protect your own kids, but don't try to fix the internet by entrapping people. The problem is so much bigger than you could guess, and there are already police and government agencies that specialize in that particular facet of it. One other warning I've just thought of: It's not unusual for someone who finds children arousing to justify their interest by saying they're trying to bust the bad guys. You have no way of knowing whether or not the people you'd be working with are actually out to do good, or if their efforts are more prurient. |

Wow foryoubabyblue.. I never would have thought of all of those things until you posted. It makes perfect sense. I wish I was more tech savvy. I have been pretty stupid when it comes to protecting my kids online, and consequently all I see that I am doing is damage control, grounding them and then having to have my CP fixed because of the damage done. I have Norton Anti Virus, but what other programs can be used to keep kids from getting the porn pop ups and the bad sites? Also, my son loves myspace, without having to take it away from him, is there any way to be able to block the junk? Thanks for your help! |

I am a volunteer HSer or Human Shield with Perverted Justice, trust me you have to have a very strong stomache for this type of thing, some of the stuff you see Chris Hansen show on TCAP is only what the FCC allows him to talk about, some of these 176 convicted now Online Predators their chats are downright gross and disturbing. It takes time to learn the ropes and to even be allowed as a major volunteer or contributor with PJ. Start out on the forums, look around read etc and get the lay of the land. Right now we have started a program for Corporate Sex Offenders and have been really hitting Myspace to remove the profiles that are not just objectionable but are those of known Convicted Sex Offenders and Myspace surprisingly enough has been very helpful now when in the past they just ignored everything. I had a chance to sit in on the trial of the Notorius Rabbi Kaye who was caught in a TCAP sting in Herndon VA, his case made me want to puke after I saw the full chat logs and heard soem of what went on. He has been sentenced appropriately IMHO.

Non-police investigations can interfere with ones the PD is running. Or you could end up talking to someone else who's put out a bait profile. ohhgodd, I use Firefox, with pop-ups blocked, Ad-Aware, and Grisoft Anti-Virus, all of which are free. I also use Hotmail and Yahoo accounts for purposes where I know I'm likely to get spammed, and an email for a domain I own for use with friends. I don't have children, but I know how to setup my network so it won't connect to certain sites. I know there's a lot of software meant to help do the same thing that's aimed at families. Firefox also lets you right-click an image, and choose to block images from the site it's from. One of our computers has Mozilla installed on it with high security settings that we can use if we want to view potentially questionable material, or pages that might link to such pages. It's pretty safe to assume that most pre-teens and teens have been exposed to more than we'd guess. Make sure your son knows there are creepy things out there, and has some idea what pages are okay to visit, which may pose a threat to your computer, and which belong to people you wouldn't want to know. I don't use MySpace because I've known too many people who saw its main purpose as finding sex partners, but searching for myspace safety on Google is bringing up a lot of information. |
