Spinoff: WHO STILL LOVES THE ICE CREAM MAN!???!

LOL! Please don't tell me I'm the ONLY adult who gets nostalgic and heart skips a little beat when that familiar tune rings through the neighborhood?

Down here in my Atlanta neighborhood, it's a little different. It's more of a cart pushed by a guy. I haven't seen an actual truck in ages!

When I'm up visiting my family in Toledo in the summer though, the ice cream man comes through and I'll go after him sometimes! LOL!!

It's silly, I know! But it always reminds me of when me and my friends would run fast to our respective homes after hearing that song and seeing the truck moving slow in the distance...begging our parents/grandparents for any spare change!

Ahhh, the simple joys of youth. <sigh>

ladystrange, from where did he get the ice cream? I've always wondered. Is it a special place only for vendors?
As to the OP, one comes around here fairly regularly. Sometime we treat ourselves but it's so expensive! Being a cheapie, it's hard to swallow spending a dollar for one ice cream when you know you can spend a little extra and get a whole box.

we never had an ice cream man. we live in a rural area and no one ever had an ice cream truck but I'm sure I would have loved him and probably still would if they were around here.

I completely agree! I remember when you could get things for a quarter or less! Even that was a little more expensive than the grocery store, but it was within reach.

I'm happy if I can just get one thing every summer or two. Even though you can get the same stuff at the store it somehow tastes a little better from the ICE CREAM MAN!! LOLOL!

They drive vans around here with loud music playing. The kids come running when they hear it! Yesterday several kids from the neighborhood sat waiting for quite a while and he never came - they were sure disappointed.

We do NOT have an ice cream truck in our neighborhood, which is very disappointing to the kids! We used to live a few miles from here in another neighborhood, and had 2 trucks daily. I have called some of the local companies (Mr. Softee, etc.), asking for a truck, but it is up to the driver to chart his route, and they tell us they are already stretched too thin. Maybe I should do it myself!

Growing up, we had Mr. Hood and the Good Humor Man. Loved them both, but Mr. Hood became my favorite when he scooped me up off the street after I crashed my bike and rushed me home to my parents. 14 stitches in my head later, we were all big fans!

Our ice cream man came around today. His prices aren't so bad, either. Our kids get ice cream from him sometimes.

Does anyone remember the guy/woman/whatever that would walk around the beach with the ice cream chest strapped around his self, selling ice cream??? OMG, THOSE were the days.

Even though I love the ice cream man, ours is creepy too! He comes every day, and I usually let the kids get something 2x a week, but only if I go outside with them because he does look like Chester Molester! lol

Funny that you bring this up. Yesterday at my mom and dad's house, I heard that all too familiar sound from my childhood(I haven't seen or heard an ice cream truck in years). I told my girls that I heard the ice cream man....much to my surprise, they knew about it. Well, the sound was going away from my parents house, so the girls and I jump in the car and chase the ice cream WOMAN down!! LOL
Turns out that the ice cream man had come through the park one day when my girls were there with their dad so they had experienced it before. But they still loved it and though I bought nothing for myself, it was a sweet memory.

My ice cream man stops at our house and plays his music just waiting for my children!! He usually comes just as dad is coming home and of course my dd give the kids my for ice cream! I am thankful that he only comes on wed. and sat., my dd know the excat times!

My children's school has the ice cream man come to school, near the end of the year, and it is for Spainish class. The children have to learn to ask for what they want in Spainish or no ice cream! Believe me they learned! Even I know how to ask for what I want in Spainish too! My children's Spainish teacher use to say I was one of her best students! And if you are thinking how do you find an Spainish speaking ice cream man? Miami of course!

The Dh worked for a distributor who had a fleet of ice cream trucks and he bought from a wholesaler that specialized in ice cream. The wholesaler probably bought it directly from the manufactuer. The Dh bought the ice cream for the truck and then sold it that way. He bought it from the owner of the truck at about 1/2 of what it cost. Hope this helps since I had to drag the DH out of the bedroom! Oh well....he needed to get up anyway! LOL

We always end up "chasing down" the ice cream man for our son. Normally, I have DH take him. LOL.

We live down the street from a semi-busy road, and the ice cream man is afraid to cross it in his little moped thing. So when we hear the music ("The Entertainer") we chase him down.

Our son almost always gets a specialty ice cream : Spongebob, Sour baseball mitt, etc.

DH and I most always get the Drumstick, or Klondike bar, or something of that nature.

Yes, it is a bit pricey, but we always have a huge bucket of change.

It must be a Toledo thing The only memories I have of the ice cream man are from visiting my relatives in Toledo every summer...and the ice cream man came by my Aunt's house everyday. I always loved the "bomb pops" (red/white/blue popsicle)....and half the fun was racing around in the house looking for Mom to get some $$$...and chasing the ice cream truck down before it passed the house

I saw an ice cream man a few years ago (first time I saw one in probably 20 years)...and he was just skanky. NO WAY would I buy ice cream from him and his little filthy half-broken down rattletrap of a truck. YUCK. The ice cream man never looked like that back in the "old days"
