Of course I will. It's my favorite. I just don't like any of the other brands. I don't feel that it's any different than when we had a contamination in our water supply and we had to boil all our water before using it. I couldn't just say "Well I'll never use our water again" I have faith that they will take extra precautions after this and I think it will be alright.

I'm a Skippy person myself. I did notice there was still no Peter Pan on the shelf at the store last time I looked. In the future, when it comes back to the stores, I think it will be safe because I am postive they are going over the problem with a fine tooth comb right now. They will surely have large promotions to regain market share. The recalls are done for our safety and I applaude the concept of recalls. BUT, there have been too many large recalls of deadly items lately (Produce, Peter Pan, pet foods) Which makes me think the "Watchers aren't watching" well enough. Inspections are supposed to be done before stuff reaches the consumer.. so what's up with that? Last edited by luckyme; 04-24-2007 at 05:54 PM. |

We were a Peter Pan PB family - now I don't know. I read that they would be back on store shelves in June, but I am not sure I will buy them again. From what I have read, they still don't know how the peanut butter became contaminated. How can they fix the problem? What's to stop it from happening again if they haven't figured out how it happened in the first place? The Tylenol problem was from an outside source and the company changed their packaging to make consumers feel more secure. I don't see how ConAgra can convince me that they are now safe since the problem came from their end somewhere.

And what's to stop it from happening to the other brands of PB. Skippy or Jif could be next. It's happened to some fresh leafy vegetables as well as Peter Pan. And who knows what else has been contaminated in isolated areas that we haven't heard about. And what about the Gerber baby food a few years ago that had crushed glass in the jars? I'm sure it will crop up again and again in some other kinds of food products. The terroists will stop at nothing. Are you going to completely stop going to the grocery stores? Will you resort to ONLY eating what is grown on your own property? Or use only the eggs and milk produced from your own chickens and cows? And will your chickens and cows only eat what is home grown on your property? Of course I'll eat Peter Pan again...just as I have resumed eating green leafy vegetables. I don't have a choice about eating out of the grocery stores. I don't have a farm to consume ONLY homegrown.

You know, I posted this because my dad and my sister are Peter Pan users, but my mom and I use Jif. You know what they say, "Choosy moms choose Jif"! LOL Holly

here's what I read off MSN just a few days back about the Peter Pan Peanut Butter Moisture Led to Salmonella Outbreak Apr 5, 04:17 PM EST By JOSH FUNK - AP Business Writer OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Moisture from a leaky roof and faulty sprinkler helped salmonella bacteria grow and contaminate peanut butter at its Georgia plant last year, sickening more than 400 people nationwide, ConAgra Foods said Thursday. The Omaha-based company conducted a nearly two-month investigation into the contamination and pledged to ensure that Peter Pan peanut butter is safe when it returns to stores in mid-July. "Consumer safety and health is our top priority," ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs said. "We plan to do our best to regain consumer trust once Peter Pan returns to stores." Childs said the company traced the salmonella outbreak to three problems at its Sylvester, Ga., plant last August. The plant's roof leaked during a rainstorm, and the sprinkler system went off twice because of a faulty sprinkler, which was repaired. The moisture from those three events mixed with dormant salmonella bacteria in the plant that Childs said likely came from raw peanuts and peanut dust. The plant was cleaned thoroughly after the roof leak and sprinkler problem, but the salmonella remained and somehow came in contact with peanut butter before it was packaged, she said. ConAgra recalled all its peanut butter in February after federal health officials linked it to cases of salmonella infection. At least 425 people in 44 states were sickened, and lawsuits have been filed against the company. The recall covered all Peter Pan peanut butter and all Great Value peanut butter made at the Sylvester plant since October 2004. That plant is ConAgra's only peanut butter plant. Peanuts grow underground and salmonella is present in the dirt, but generally any bacteria are killed when raw peanuts are roasted. When making peanut butter, the nuts are again heated - above the salmonella-killing temperature of 165 degrees - as they are ground into a paste and mixed with other ingredients before being squirted into jars and quickly sealed. Experts had speculated that salmonella would be most likely to contaminate peanut butter as it cooled and was placed in jars. At most plants, those steps take just minutes. The company plans to redesign the plant to provide greater separation between raw peanuts and the finished product, Childs said. The plant will also get a new roof. ConAgra plans to reopen the plant in early August. Before this recall, none of ConAgra's recent routine testing had detected salmonella, so the company plans to develop a new procedure. The Food and Drug Administration inspected the plant in February 2005 and found no problems, agency spokesman Michael Herndon has said. He did not immediately return calls Thursday. ConAgra has hired an experienced microbiologist to oversee food safety, Childs said. While renovations are being done, Peter Pan will be made at another company's plant, the company said. Childs declined to identify that manufacturing partner and said ConAgra had not decided whether that plant will continue making Peter Pan after its Sylvester factory reopens. Since the recall shut down production, the Sylvester plant's roughly 100 workers have been paid to do maintenance work. Childs said it's not yet clear how the renovations will affect those employees. Before the recall, ConAgra sold $150 million worth of peanut butter each year, Childs said. In addition to peanut butter, the company's brand names include Healthy Choice, Chef Boyardee and Orville Redenbacher. Salmonella sickens about 40,000 people a year in the U.S. and kills about 600. It can cause diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting. But most cases of salmonella poisoning are caused by undercooked eggs and chicken. The only previously known salmonella outbreak in peanut butter - in Australia during the mid-1990s - was blamed on unsanitary plant conditions. --- On the Net: ConAgra Foods Inc.: ConAgra Foods : Retail Food Products, Food Service and Food Distributor

yes, of course. In fact, I'm hoping they put out coupons for FREE p'nut butter when they do bring it back. You would be totally disgusted if you knew how much "allowable" stuff is in your food already. Do you think anyplace is THAT sanitary??? I don't live my life in fear, that's not living, to me.

I'll buy it again. It's my favorite and I was eating a jar a week. I saw the Walmart brand back on the shelves about two weeks ago and thought oh my god, Peter Pan is coming back....brought the largest jar and so far two spoonsful has been taken out. I think Jif put this one out. Nothing like PP.

In my book crunchy peanut butter is crunchy peanut butter. If I worried about every possible bug or illness I could get from something I would be very skinny and a nervous wreck to walk anywhere. |

I heard on the news that the FDA has known for a long time about the problem -- long before the recall started. I live in GA and news about the plant is on at least once a week. Personally, we eat 'natural' peanut butter at our house and I don't know that Peter Pan makes a natural, so we probably won't eat Peter Pan at our house. However, if they did make a natural variety, I would probably buy it because I bet their plant was cleaned from top to bottom and is probably now one of the cleanest plants around. ok ok... You knew Id chime in with a funny story. Years ago, we had a mouse in the house. I bought the cheapo traps but tried cheese and it didnt work. I had to go BUY peanut butter to put on it. I went to the supermarket, and asked the kid where the cans of peanut butter were... He looked at me, like I had 2 heads... 'cans?' he said - The jars are in aisle 2... I was like 'Oh yeah... der'. went over to the PB aisle spot, and looked at the different types, and tried to figure out: 1) Which kind would a mouse like 2) Which kind would <I> like, since once the mouse is gone, the PB goes to work with me (and not in the house) I think I bought crunchy umm... I dunno what company. Whatever was on sale, of course ![]() Mouse didnt like it. I didn't vote. We don't buy PB. We <DO> buy soynut butter (which does NOT taste like the soyjoy bars) ![]() Jason |

Oh Soy, in peanut butter. I don't like it myself, but if you like soy in your peanut butter then Aldi's generic brand might suit you well. It's really made of soy with just enough peanut butter that they can technically call it peanut butter.

We were just talking about this today. I miss my Peter Pan and really want it to come back. I can't wait. Haven't had any since. My husband and a couple of the kids like Jif Crunchy but a couple of the kids and myself eat Peter Pan smooth. I really miss it. I mentioned this to my mother today all (before reading this post) and she is also very anxious to get it on the shelves again. I figure we are all going to die somehow, might as well go enjoying ourselves. |
