Dry skin?

Didn't know another place here to ask but would like some opinions...

My hands are EXTREMELY dry and wanted to know if any of you know or use an intensive moisturizing treatment for this. I'm going to BBW and wondered if any of their higher end products would work, or if you can suggest another product, I sure would appreciate it. TIA!

I am suffering a severe vitamin deficiency post op Gastric Bypass right now, and am sure this has something to do with it as my cuticles are dry and my skin on my hands is as well, but the Dr. always wants to see my hands. I also had bad cracking on my lips too. So this must be a symptom.

I wear rubber gloves for anything where my hands will get wet (besides shower). I use Gold Bond Ultimate Healing for my skin -- from Walmart. I'll often put it on before I put on the rubber gloves and do dishes. Something about the heat from the dishwater... almost like a manicure!

Do you take vitamin E orally? Do you drink as much water as possible? Not sure how hard that is with the gastric bypass.

Sorry for your frustrations... I did a traditional diet a few years ago and lost hair and had dry skin. I guess it is your body's way of adjusting. Hang in there! Hopefully, things will even out in time.

One more thing that I do...

I slather on olive oil under the rubber gloves when I do the dishes. Just did that a few minutes ago (!) and it has already soaked in and my hands feel spectacular!

I received a sample of Curel Hand & Cuticle lotion that I just loved! Wal-Greens had it in their ad last week for $5., a 3.5 oz tube. A little pricey since that was probably on sale. However, it was a wonderful product.

You can get some cotton gloves at Linens N Things and put vaseline on at night and then put these gloves on before going to bed. This helps alot too. ANd doesn't cost alot either. I live in the desert now and it is REALLY DRY here. Also make sure you get enough water. The lips cracking could be a sign of dehydration. Good luck.

I'm a BIG Paula Begoun fan (Don't go to the Cosmetics counter without me) and as far as dry skin for your body she recommends "Dove Cool Moisture" as far as one of her cheaper recommendations..HTH

I love Aveeno, but do worry about them testing on animals. It IS good stuff, though. You can also take a pair of mini gloves (you know the really stretchy ones that cost about $1), snip the finger tips off, and use those so you can smear on oil or lotion and go about your daily tasks.

Vit.E oil works for me.Your hands are oily for about 15 minutes after putting it on but if your hands are as dry as mine get, most of it will be absorbed after 15 minutes and your hands will look beautiful.

Are you taking B-12 shots? My mother in law had this surgery she has to have B-12 shots I believe every 2 weeks..

I'm also B-12 defiency...In the beginning the corner of my mouth started to crack then years later my lip peeled (looked like someone burn my lips) That is when they detected my B-12 def...I think it took aleast 6 months before my lips got any better after receiving the monthly shot..

The B vitamins work together so when you are defiency in one you more likely defiency in other B vitamins. I know B-12 defiency can cause dry skin and it can also be a sign of another B- defiency

Has your Dr check to see what vitamins you are defiency in & giving you treatment for it?

When my lips were cracked and peeling I used Carmex Lip Balm...I now use Blistex complete moisture espically before i apply my lipstick..Lipstick tends to dry my lips.

For dry skin I use Eucerin orignal moiturizing creme "the one that comes in a tub " i think it cost around $10 -the creme looks like lard and really helps my dry skin...

Thanks for all your suggestions. I ended up going out before there were any replies and was in the pharmacy and bought Zim's Crack Cream. Wasn't cheap but it seems to be working nicely.

Yes I feel I am hydrated. I drink ALOT during the day and am currently on TPN (Total Parental Nutrition) through a PIC line. turns out after suffering for a year from sudden Peripheral Neuropathy in my right foot/leg, and nerve damage in my extremities and my neck, and suffering mental issues, confusion and seeing several neurologists and going through MRI's, EMG's, Spinal Tap, SSEP's, with no answers except "Yep, you have nerve damage" but noone knew why.

Bariatric surgeon ended up suggesting TPN for a few weeks to give me a boost as I was going downhill. So two months ago, he put a Hickman Catheter in my chest. Then referred me to a nutritional doctor who was specialized in the monitoring of TPN. She is finally the one who picked up on my Thiamine deficiency, which if severe enough, (and mine was) could cause all my problems..So I am being giving supplemental B1 in my TPN. Don't see any resolve in any of my symptoms, I cannot work now..but it could take a long time, she said, or it's possible since the damage had gone on so long, it might not be reversible.

I did some research on Bariatric Beri Beri, and turns out it can be hard to diagnose, and could advance to a form of encephalopathy when it affects the nerves, and mental status, which mine did. They say that 50% of these patients can show up with brain lesions, and my MRI's showed "non specific" lesions on my brain. They were watching me for MS.

My surgeon checked my vitamin levels regularly. I was a perfect Gastric bypass patient, took my protein supplements daily, my vitamins daily, I was just unlucky. From day one I have been. Ended up with an ulcer that wouldn't heal 7 months post op, and required a surgery to cut it out of my new stomach...had several emergency surgeries from an intestinal hernia and adhesions...and then I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago for 5 days when I got a staph infection in my catheter, and had to have it removed (can we say OUCH) and have a PICC line inserted instead.

Needless to say I am regreting the surgery....I believe it's not for everyone, and everyone who is considering it should consider some of the possible complications and put themselves in the situation that maybe you might be the one to get them, which of course, I had the "Won't happen to me" attitude.

Oh well, what a long post. Thanks for your responses, and for keeping me entertained reading all your posts and jokes and ideas, and recipes over the past 2 months. I check here several times a day and enjoy all of your "cyber" company!
