Extreme Sunburn Remedies Anyone??

Hey Guys,

Went on our adult vacation last week, and on the last day of our cruise I fell asleep on deck with no sunscreen on. Anyway.. OUCH!! I've tried vinegar, solarcaine, aloe, vitamin e.. you name it. I've got major blisters, swelling like you wouldn't believe, and massive amounts of pain. I've gone to the doctor and he gave me a cortizone shot and some mild painkillers. Anyone else have some suggestions?? The vacation was great by the way. If you ever get the chance to go to Roatan, Honduras... it's so worth going. There's a lot of poverty, but the people are awesome and the scenery can't be beat. Sooooo beautiful!!

Anyway.. tia for any suggestions you may have.

as a child, i remember my grandma rubbing Noxzema all over me for sunburn. I remember it was very cooling immediately. But remember I am talking 30 years ago, so I can't tell you exactly how great it was, just that granny did it and it was cool.

If I remember anymore, I will post. That was just the 1st thing that came to mind when i read your post.

I would think something like motrin for the inflammation and pain. Drink lots of fluid.

My DS got sunburn, it peeled, then he burned on top of that. It blistered, and got infected. The dr. gave him a tetanus booster, and some zinc cream stuff, I think. I forget what it was called, but, it made it "slough" off.

Good luck.

Ouch, I hope you are feeling better. I had the same thing a couple of years ago, and I used the vinegar, I went to bed smelling like a salad, but it helped a little. The bad thing about mine was my lips were so burnt that they swelled. It wasnt pretty. HTH]

Make strong tea (regular tea not herbal.) Let it cool and wet a wash cloth or larger in it and lay it on the painful area it will help the pain, heat and healing. If it's really bad you can add the tea to a bath and just soak it out but add at least a quart of tea

Think of it as you would any other burn. Lots of cool baths, no oils, soaps or lotions in the water.

For relief of specific areas, a cool compress soaked in milk & water will really help.

Take either aspirin or ibuprofen (i.e. Alleve) which will help reduce the inflammation and the pain.

I hope you feel better soon.

Ok, it's called Silver Sulfadiazine. You may also want to try an Aveeno bath for sunburn???

There's Noxzema original in the pump bottle. It's easy to go on. Just make sure you pick up the original formula. DH uses this when he forgets to use sunscreen. It cools and moisturizes. I keep rubbing in till no more will rub in.

OUCH!!! We leave for the "adult vaca" for the keys in less than ten days and both DH and I have been turbo tanning. I know not the healthiest choice for our skin but I firgured a gradual tan was better than a burn. I feel for you girl. I got sun posioning when I was 17, a week in Daytona for Spring Break, it jst about killed me. I could wear anything for twoo weeks it hurt so bad. It was just on my front so I literally laid on my back for two weeks while my mommy brought me lotions and food! Never let your teenage daughter go to Daytona, EVER!! but thats another story! I am pretty sure you need to be drinking lots of fluids and wet wash clothes with sterile water should draw it out!! I hope you feel better soon...dont forget the motrin!

I always use aloe vera as well but the pure kind not the kind mixed with all kinds of chemicals you can get it bottles or just buy a few staulks from the produce section in the grocery store. A comfrey salve works great as well but harder to find- I always make my own.

Hubby did the same thing on our cruise but on the first day!!!!! He spent 3 of the 5 days in the room. I went to the bar and brought back some tea bags and brewed som tea. Had hubby lay on the bed and dipped tea bags in the water (after it cooled) and then squeezed out the tea bag on is back (keep dipping back in the water) He did have bad sunburn and when we got home his back blistered and peeled off in one sheet. YUCKY. He also had a lot of motrin on the boat and when he slept we put a pillow on the air conditioner and then took it off and layed it on his back. (this kept the sunburn COOLER)

HTH

Hubby learned now!!!

I hope you feel better soon! I would say vinegar to take the sting out of it. I also heard of smearing yogurt on it.. I've never tried itbefore though.

Make a paste of baking soda and water (3/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup water). Put it all over the sunburned area. Just leave it and let it dry there. It doesn't look pretty, but it does help.

Get a bottle of pure aloe vera and stick it into the fridge until it gets very cold and then apply it to the sunburned areas. It helps.

This may sound funny. My dh had radiation for prostate cancer. Sometimes they get "burned" in the process on parts of their body. The doctor gave him a prescription. It is called xclair cream. It said to use it on burns and sunburns. I burned my finger on the oven. Put some on. It was like it healed in a day.

WOW!! Thanks for all the suggestions.. It's just my front that was burned so I'm able to sit comfortably, but I have to keep the arms and legs from touching each other or anything else. Dh is going out to get some noxema and plain aloe. If the otc suggestions don't work then I'm calling the doctor for the xclair cream. It's gotten better the past few days and I'm really lucky considering that it did happen on the last day of the cruise. Would have hated to miss all the good stuff onshore.
