| Thumb sucking - ideas on stopping it!
We are trying to break the thumb sucking habit of our 3 yr old DD. Any ideas? I am game for anything at this point. I tried a search on this topic and didn't find anything related. Sorry if this has been discussed recently and I didn't find it. Thanks!

My two oldest DDs suck their thumbs. Heres the top two kickers. 1. Each one has a video tape(yes I know so old 10yoDD and 8yo DD) of their sonogram and they are sucking their thumbs!! So cute!! 2. They do not suck their thumbs when they are awake, only totally asleep!! So, here the question....How do you break kids who have been doing something probably from the time their mouth and fingers formed and doing it totally unconsciously!?!?!??!?!?!?!? So i told you that to tell you that I have no idea! My dentist suggested an reminder appliance we will talk abou that more when they have their 6 month check up in June. I'll let you know how it goes!!

My middle one sucks her thumb since she was hours old she was a very good baby, knew what made her happy. As she grew my husband always would tell her she would need braces if she sucked her thumb her bottom teeth pointed in from sucking. One day we were watching ZOOM, PBS show, and there was she girl with the old big ugly braces my dd was in shock. She wanted to know if that was braces! She stopped because she didn't want braces but at night in her sleep she would have a thumb in her mouth. She did stop that but it took time. I felt that she would grow out of it, I let her because it was her way of comforting herself. And by the way she might need braces anyway...it seems that most kids do today! Hey, it's better than a 3 or 4 and sometimes older, running around with a pacifer in their mouth!! I mean a thumb is part of them that cann't be removed. |

We are working on getting DS to stop sucking his thumb too because it is causing his nail to rot. He is 2 1/2. We tried that nail polish and it didn't do anything for him, he didn't even notice that it was there. We tried bandaids over the thumb, but he would continue to suck his thumb even with the bandaid there. What we are doing now, which is working great (and has allowed him to grow some of his nail back!), is at night we put a fingertip of a stretch glove over his thumb. At first we would tape it on so he couldn't remove it and we would have him wear it all day and night. I suppose that a whole glove would work just as well, but we didn't want the bulk of the glove, plus it would have made it much harder for him to use that hand...and since he is only 2 1/2... Anyway, he doesn't try to suck it, who would want to suck on a glove??? That is the best solution I have found so far.

DD has always been a thumb sucker, or anything that got close enuf to her mouth when she was teeny tiny. She still sucks her thumb, but, only whe really tired. We were told not to worry about it, she would stop when she got more socially active. Sure enuf, that is what happened. She sucks her thumb when she is tired, that's all, and it's slowly tapering off. Her teeth are not buck, but, I'm sure she'll need braces anyway.....doesn't everyone??? Honestly, if your child's teeth are not suffering, and they are not, I wouldn't worry about it at this age. JMTCW

My neighbor brought her daughter for a manicure and she never sucked it after that. She didn't want to ruin her pretty nails.
