Bomb Threat issued at our local school for Monday the 30th

The kids have been coming home this week saying there were bomb threats written in the bathrooms of the high school that they go to. The school did not inform us until today. On my answering machine, there was a message from the Principal saying that there were 2 Bomb threats written on the bathroom walls, stating a bomb will go off on Monday April 30th at 3:00. He proceeded to give the normal BS about they are working with local officials, etc. (This was a recording). I informed the kids they would not be going to school but they said the teachers and all aren't concerned? Shouldn't they be? Even if this was someone doing it for a joke, I think it should be taken seriously. Since VT (which is 2 hours away), Elizabeth City, NC has recieved 1 bomb threat and last night they recieved a message that there would be a shooting at the middle school sometime Friday. EC closed all their schools. I'm now wondering if our school will close down or not. Just wondering what you guys would do, send your children or keep them home?

There was a bomb threat at a local high school here last week.

I think if someone is really going to go through the prosses of placing a bomb in a school (or a school shooting) they will not anounce it days earlier. However, I would probably keep my kids home that day for my own minds sake.

Bomb Threats

I was eating lunch with my cousin tuesday and there were tons of kids there having a great time, because of a threat
And when it came on the news they were all standing around the tv laughing and clapping
It is really sad that they think it is funny and not serious at all

It may be a joke or whatever but I would NOT send my kids to school. I just can't imagine how I would feel or ever live with myself if I did send them and something really happened.

Was a bomb threatLAST week at our high school in West Jefferson Hills school district here in Pennsylvania, and one at one of the elementary schools THIS week! How sad. Thay left it up to the parents last week to send them or not, this week the school was closed. If my girls were still in school, I would have kept them home.

Seriously, there was one at our JH too in Ohio! They had to have a lockdown because of something written in the bathroom. Another parent at school said something about a kid bragging on myspace about it. Do you think all of these are related? I mean maybe they all talked about it on myspace or something? Just a random thought...sickening!

Our HS had one last Friday the 20th. My oldest DS text messaged me to come get him. I was terrified and truthfully, don't remember even driving to get him. Thankfully, nothing came of it. Makes you wonder what the heck is wrong with people nowadays.

Bomb threat this week at the U of Iowa. My sister works in one of the blgds on lockdown. Turned out to be nothing. But she was in the building when that shooting took place here about 15 years ago. I think 6 people died then. Nasty stuff.
When my oldest was in high school, around the time of Columbine, they had a threat and he called and I went and picked him up. Most students stayed but I'm one of those better safe than sorry people so I picked him up.
It's a scary world out there.....Schools aren't safe, workplaces aren't safe.......

There was one at a nearby high school and a Technical School just this week here. I'm pretty sure in at least the Technical School they found it written on the restroom walls.

Edited: I was looking for a link to the local threats and I ran across one that was for SIU (Southern Illinois University) for this week also. That's weird that it's going on everywhere.

My other DD is in middle school (about 1000 yards from the High School) and they were on Lockdown all day. I went on the website but nothing was said. I don't think they had a bomb threat but I think the Principal there isn't taking any chances with anything. The High School is on the same property, so I guess he felt it was necessary. Shawna told me that her teacher forgot to shut the door and lock it after the kids came in for class and the Principal walked by and saw it and proceeded to tell the teacher off. He's a new Principal but so far I'm liking him.

My 17yr DD informed me she wouldn't be going anyway, even if I told her she had too. She hasn't let on that its scaring her (nothing scares her) but she's been in the living room with me all night watching a movie that only an adult would enjoy (The Queen). That's strange for her, she's normally out with her "buddies" at the movies but I'm not complaining, we had a great time and she enjoyed the movie.

My son says its someone playing a joke, trying to get the school out for the day b/c its test day. I believe him but won't take the chance.

This world is getting crazy. That's so sad.

Take care of your kids Tammy--keep them home w/ you. Hopefully nothing will happen, and it probably won't. But., if it did, you would never forgive yourself. Just wondering though-why do your kids have to travel across the sound for school, would it be easier to go to Kellam?

I'm sad to tell you that at my son's middle school where we live (in a somewhat "affluent" area), there have been 3 bomb threats so far this year. Last year they had 7. The school treats them all very seriously - evacuating the entire school (and I should add, there is an elementary school that is kind of attached to it on the other side, so they have to evacuate that school as well) while the school is searched. Every time it has been a kid playing a joke or trying to avoid taking a test. The school punishes those who are caught very harshly but still..... It's depressing to think how common these are now.

While growing up, I never ONCE had something like this happen. Only fire drills and tornado drills.

Times have sure changed.

Linnybop,

Yeah it would be easier if they went to Kellam but b/c we are NC, they have to cross the ferry to get to the high school. VA won't allow the kids in their schools. All the locals have always said, they wish VA would buy us and we be a part of them instead of NC. But that won't happen. My son gets up at 5:30 every morning, if he (he drives) isn't down at the ferry dock by 6:00, he won't get on the ferry. To drive around is WAY too much gas money so they know if they don't make the ferry they have to park the car and get a ride or take the bus. My DDs get up at 6:00 and 6:15 and get ready and I take them down there to the ferry where my son's twin jumps in his car and my 13 yr old walks onto the ferry. My 17yr DD always saids she wants to go to Kellam

If you feel uncomfortable, keep them home. It is probably a prank but all schools now take things like that serious. I have been a teacher for 25 years. When I started in 1975, we only practiced fire drills (and tornado). When I was a kid, we practiced for bombings from Russia. In the last 19 years, I have lived in Maryland. So I experienced 911 when the planes went into the Pentagon. I had to stay until all students were safely at home. My ds was in the miliary at that time (at Walter Reed Hospital), my dd was at the local community college, my dh was in Baltimore, and my dil was at Children's Hospital. My first duty was to the children in my class and school. By 2:00, I was able to connect with my dh and my dd.
My son was called into the hospital. Several of the students in our school had family members in the Pentagon including one student in my class. The following year we had the sniper. For 3 weeks, kids came to school. We could not have recess. The shades were pulled. Parents who were police officers, CIA and secret service opened car doors to let the students run into school. The last day of the sniper there was a backup of traffic about 2 blocks from my school. I told my dh I would just walk. I walked pass police with rifles (we are across from a big high school) only to find that the pastor closed our school. We found out later that the YMCA that he was working out at was about 1/2 mile from my school.
So I would keep them home.

There was a threat here that everybody at one of the high schools that wore VT colors on a certain day would be shot. The sheriff's kids go to that school and he kept them home. Parents were coming to pick their kids up left and right. A few days later there was a bomb threat at one of the grade schools and they evacuated. Heck, those are just the ones I know about too... My kids are in college now, but sometimes it just seems like no place is safe anymore...
