We let the kids pick ONE sport per season. Brandon is doing soccer with the YMCA. It's $50, and then I bought the shoes and shin guards-- they totaled $20.00 (Yes I had a coupon!). Not bad all in all, $70.00. Nicole didn't want to do a sport this year. We still have our Y membership, so Nicole swims there twice a week for exercise and fun. Holly

Funny you should ask. I just finished signing my soon-to-be-13-YO son up for a 4-day summer football camp for the whopping total of $849!! I can't believe I did it....but he is nuts about football. Pop Warner is running around $200 or so for the fall season. The other "extracurricular" that I have to pay for is his bus to/from school....grrr....
|
| ||||
|
I am absolutley flabergasted!!! I had NO idea people paid so much. I don't think that you all are typical, at least not in our area.....And for a 4 YO?? Wow. I was just reading this to my DH.... I suppose we spent money on our kids like that, it was just on rabbits and horses for 4-H!! (horses are terribly expensive to keep) LOL Now it's college and graduation and last year, a wedding! |

Wow, let's see: Oldest DD: soccer $225 for this season (rec not competitive-used same uniform as last year), $120 for basketball in the winter (also used last years uniform) Youngest DD: soccer $75 fee, $75 uniform, $99 for hotel for tourney this weekend (rec not competitive), $110 for softball for the summer, $50 uniform plus glove, bat, batting helmet, bag, etc. (I forgot what all that cost) Both are in dance: tuition $169/month, plus about $300 shoes, $500 costumes, $310 regional competition fees, $40 recital fee, $50 summer practice fee, $200 national competition fees plus several days of hotel & related expenses for that trip youngest dd is in piano for $90/month youngest dd is also in girl scouts for assorted costs - $10 registration, $40 dues, misc donations here & there We've seriously got to drop some stuff! Lisa

My oldest dd age 10 does: tennis at the YMCA for $120 for this session which is 8 lessons this time, once a week for 8 weeks Flute lesson $20 1/2 half hour once a week rental of flute is $27.xx a month My middle dd age 9 does: piano $45 for 45 min.!! once a week, but the teacher is really good, well worth the money! Plus he comes to my house. golf is $150 for 1 1/2 hours, once a week for 6 weeks My ds age 7 does: swim is $75 a month twice a week for 45 min and then there a races 2 times a month which are inculded in that price, it's a deal! I am not going to add it all up for the month...really don't want to know! But golf and tennis will be ending for the summer soon, won't put them in over the summer, too hot in Miami for either in the summer. Swim is all year because the pool is heated. And next year my flutist will be in middle school and have band everyday so no more lessons! And I really don't know when I will be done paying for the flute...rent to buy but never asked for how long! (shame on me for not asking!) |

right now all four boys are playing baseball-it was $60 per kid, but it was pay for three and the rest are free, which was the only reason I signed up the five year old. Shirts and hats are provided for the little younger two and we were able to dig around in our hand-me-down box and find cleats and baseball pants that fit each one-and we have a gazillion gloves here too. For the older two, their uniforms are provided, and they have all their gear as well. They usually play basketball in the winter, and that is about the same price, and my 14yr. old likes to play football as well-which is about $90. The most expensive activity is marching band for our oldest. We probably put out at least $500 for the year, and he just went on Spring Trip which was almost $700, and we gave him $200 spending $$. All this, and you still have to buy them clothes and feed them-when will it end????????lol...

HS football and track for oldest DS is $75 each Middle school football and track for youngest DS is $50 each Youngest DS plays community baseball and that's $120 Their both in 4H and it's $30 a family I think the most expensive part is the extras they need.....mitts, cleats, running shoes, etc. |

This thread has me thinking. My parents gave me the hose and put me in the backyard with a bottle of Palmolive. That was our summer fun. My DD -5 is in Soccer- $100 regist fee, $30 cleats, $19 Shin guards and $5 ball. PLUS pictures were today- $25 for the cheapest package. End of season party next month- each child was asked to 'donate' $25 for the food, etc. Swim $80 for 8 days- she is doing 4 sessions over the summer, so $320 Gymnastics- $110 a month- 2x a week Ballet Camp - $450- 3x a week, all summer My DS- 2 Rollie Pollies- Kinda like Gymboree- $85 a month- 1x a week Swim $80 for 8 days 3 sessions over the summer- $240 PLUS we are taking them to Cancun for 10 days in August- don't ask! |

Lets see... 12 year old son-soccer I am the President of the outdoor league so that is free (not really free since it would be much easier to just pay for it and not be the president!) Equipment for outdoor: (cleats $50.00, shin guards $20.00, fingered goal keeper gloves $60.00) For the indoor league it breaks down to $270.00 for the winter (plus in-door shoes $50.00, shin guards $20.00, goalie gloves $30.00). Tournaments-any where from $100 to $200 each and lodging Soccer Camp- We have the Challenger British Trainers stay with us, so the camp is "free" but I have to feed and care for them for a week...again would be much cheaper to pay for it. 8 year old son soccer- same as above

At one time I had all 4 in baseball and softball, followed by 3 in basketball. I don't think it was near as expensive then when my kids were younger. Now, my last son will graduate high school this year, roughly $500 in expenses for basketball, not counting the $1300 acl injury expenses. This coming school year I am down to just my daughter in sports. We've already started cheerleading for the next school year and the bill is just under $1000 |
| ||||
|
We also limit 1 sport per year. Oldest DS has no interest in playing any sports except piddling around at home. DS2 - Basketball (reg) - All we have to pay is $100 for shoes. Basketball (traveling team) - More shoes $100 plus traveling to, it seems, kingdom come and back. We also have several tournament fees each year. For the summer we buy the both passes to the local Swim Park - $120 each |
| ||||

Youngest has expressed an interest in Taekwondo but I was stressed because it is $60 a month. I figure we'll do the summer and then go from there. He's never asked to do anything until now and it would be so good for his self-esteem. I don't buy summer pool passes as it isn't worth it here since we'd have to go every day in order to get our moneys worth and I'm not the type of parent who drops the kids off... I always stay and I won't do that every day. ![]() I'm looking into some summer youth classes at the local community college. They usually run $55 each for a 2-week session. My oldest is interested in computer programming and youngest is a very good artist... they have classes for both! Some of you are paying mucho moola for your kids' activities!, WOW! Amazing. Way to go. |
| ||||
|
WOW, I could never afford all of these thing!? That's crazy, sorry! DS plays t-ball, it's $65 for the season. Soccer around here is $10, but you have to buy the equiptment. Karate is $40 a month, I don't know how often you go for that though. We send DS to a vacation science club sort of thing for $85 for 2 days and I think that's a lot!?

DD plays softball and basketball 5th grade. Softball $30 to play $25 an hour for pitching lessons (1X per week= $100.00 a month) this is year round shirt and visor $3.00 (we got a sponser this year so it was cheap) new leg pads $30 new Sliding shorts $27 (goes under the shorts) UnderArmor cleats $47 UnderArmor shirt $20 (long sleeve under the uniform) She has already played for 6 years so we didn't have to buy shorts, bats, balls, glove or batting helmet she just needed some new equipment because she grew. Basketball is much cheaper, the uniform is provided, has to be returned and we just had to buy shoes. She swims too, but we have an inground heated pool, so we don't have to pay any extra to go somewhere for her to swim, we don't have a public pool where we live. Do I really want to put this on paper?LOL!! Well, here goes: Both girls are in dance: $1800/year for classes, $250 for dance shoes, $$600 for costumes and I'm not sure for competition fees and hotels. Both girls have piano lessons @ $70/week. Younger DD is in competitive gymnastics for $300/month, not including competition fees. I know it's a lot of money but they love all of it and continue to excel in school so we both win. Kathy |

DD plays year round school sponcered soccer...so far 350 dollars plus 5 fund raisers to contribute to and work at...so another 500. ds plays lacrosse through ymca for high school...65 month for y and so far 850 for lacrosse... ROTC trip is going to be another 600 in june... WHERE is that MONEY TREE??? |

WOW I consider myself lucky as our activities are all school related and less then 100 out of pocket for what they need, but even when my kids were not in for school sports the costs werent even close to what everyone else is paying. My kids do 1 sport a season but we did overlap Basketball and now track for a few weeks way too crazy for any child as far as Im concered then the homework wasnt done till 11 at night crazy wont do it again! Reading some of these reminds me of the last show I just saw either trading spouses or wife swap where these 3 kids are WAYYYYY to busy with how the parents want them to be not the way the kids want to be, it was very sad and the 2nd part will be on this week.

for youngest 2 gymnastics $100 per month & swimming two weeks $45 for both girls then middle dd is in girl scouts I would say that was about $50 for the year & youngest dd is in preschool 2 hrs 2 days a week for $65 a month as for Tball only middle dd played last year & that was $40 for the season but she also had candy sales & we had to buy her special glove shes left handed & her bat which she could use all that again & the bat & glove were around $100 So the only really year round cost is gymnastics but I would say here in IA most months its way too cold to go outside so its well worth it & for oldest dd I wish she would get into something but she wont she just likes to go rollerskating & biking. Oh ya I guess preschool is year around to but thats more for education but its still costing me money every month. And its more an extra thing for her to have to get her out with other kids.

I can not believe what I am reading! I have three children, and have encouraged them to participate, but they'd rather not. Here are the fee's that I have checked on this year. Football - $30 for a year Basketball - $15 a year Soccer - $20 a year Baseball - $35 a year T Ball - $20 a year Swim - $45 for three months and $5 per month there after Cheerleading - $20, plus $10 uniform fee WIth the exclusion of cheerleading, all of the other sports INCLUDE jersey/tee shirt and one photo. I am flabbergasted at the amount of money that I have seen posted here! Totally amazed !

Let's see.... DS #1 is in jr. high, so fees are less. About $20 for basketball and baseball. He usually needs some kind of gear each season for about $50. DD is the expensive one. Dance is about $90 a month plus shoes and costumes. We also go to competitions and between fees, programs, food, gas, etc. it gets pricey. She will be about $30 for softball. Jr. High cheer for next year with shoes, outfit, camp, etc. will be about $200 plus fundraisers. DS #2 MAY participate in local leagues in one sport and that is about $30. DS #3 also participates in the local leagues for soccer and baseball. Also, about $30. |

Wow...I am shocked with what everyone is playing! I have 3 boys that are very active in sports and I would never be able to afford what everyone else is paying on this list. Right now my oldest is playing 9th grade football.....no cost to us...the school covers the cost. My middle son is playing club soccer....we pay $30 a month plus $5 to rent the uniform shirt and $4 to buy the socks. The $30 a month includes training 3 days a week for 1 1/2 hours each time. He also plays indoor soccer $25 for the season...but that includes shirt and socks. My youngest plays baseball....$25 for the season...that includes shirt/pants/hat. Pretty much all of the rec sports (soccer, basketball, swim lessons and football) are $25 per season and that includes the uniform cost. With 3 boys we pretty much can recycle the cleats and we have a gazillion soccer balls and shin guards sets around this house. I just got lucky and found someone selling some baseball equipment on my local freecycle group....their kids played one season and quit so it was all fairly new. I bought 2 equipment bags, 2 batting helmets with the guards, and 2 left hand baseball gloves (these are hard to find)....all for $5 each...yippeee!!! They are in excellent condition....it made my day can't you tell...ha ha! I love watching my boys play sports though and would cough up the money no matter what it cost! |

My oldest is 7 and plays soccer, baseball and swimming, as well as rocket club at school. This is spread out during the year, not all at once. Soccer and baseball cost $80/season, which is between 8 & 10 weeks long. This includes uniforms, but not shoes (if his feet don't grow too fast, he can sometimes wear the same shoes for more than one season). Swimming is $100/season, everyday for 8 weeks +2 weeks more if he qualifies for the county and state meet. I have to buy a team swim suit on top of that which is around $35, but he wore the last one for two seasons and we'll pass it down to DS#2 when he starts swimming next year. Rocket club at school is $45 for 6 hours -- their build their own rocket and then launch it. He does two sessions/school year. My youngest is 4 and plays soccer and signs in the chior. Choir is at the church and it is FREE. Soccer is the same as DS#1 - $80 for 10 weeks + $10-$20 for shoes. He will also have private swimming lessons this summer which will cost me $10/half-hour lesson. Also, $75/week for summer day camp (half-day) or $125 for full day camp. Yes, it's a lot of money, but if you want your kids to play then you have to play. When I was growing up, there was a lot more things that were free through the city or county or very inexpensive. I haven't found many programs like that around where I live now. Sarah........mom to Jason & Devin |

WOW! I thought we were blessed where we were, but now I know it! Swim lessons $15 for 3 weeks Mon. - Thurs. Baseball (thru grade 5)and T-Ball FREE! Our school district ties in with the park and rec. Dept., so I you are in the school district, most activities are free. Also includes Kickball 4-6th grade and Basketball K-2nd grade. Violin lessons for my 6th grader FREE! We homeschool, but the middle school in our district let my DS take violin at the school. He is the only one in the class, so it is a private lesson right now. Funny note: since this is his only class there he has a 4.0 GPA on the report card they sent! TOO FUNNY!We were renting a violin for $20 a month, but then I got one of the Target ones on clearance for $25. Took it to his teacher to see if a cheap violin was worth it and she said it sounded great and for $25 I should definitely let him use it. We also live 1 mile from a beautiful state park. They have great summer activities with the naturalist and most are free. They also have activites over Christmas break like winter survival. We also have a nature center in the next town and they do great activities all summer. Most are free or very little cost. This summer he will take a Logo Robolab class for 15 sessions for $10. The park and rec. also does adult water arobics in the outdoor pool for $15!!! The instructors are from a fitness center in town. |

My Kids are not into any sports or really anything at all. But even if my boys wanted to do it they can't. My 8 year old has 1 kidney so he can't play any sports due to this. My 7 year old son can't play any sports, But we are trying to get him into a program for *special need* children with Autism. I hope that come Thur, its half the summer and they play all kinds of sports and swimming lessons. My 10 year old DD, well her summer contains Reading program at the local library, swimming at the local pool or beach. 4 year old, She likes the park and would LIVE there if she could LOL. I take my kids to the summer movie program here, it's 6 weeks long and they show 2 movies per week. Kinda of cool when you think about it, its completely free for the kids and parents. The library has a reading program also, If the kids attend it and read the books it counts toward the AR reading program at school. So we will be doing that this summer. We go to the park in the summer at least 3 times a week and the pool nearly every single day, If we miss the pool we go to the beach. Plus, we BBQ just about every single weekend at the park so they can swim or play or both. I just don't think I would pay what some of yall are paying... thats a ton of money . More than what I would ever be able to afford for all 4 kids. However, THANK GOODNESS here, they dont cost near that. Baseball, Tball and Soccer cost 50.00 for the season, all you need it the bat, glove and shoes. Now dance here OMG, Its crazy in price of the 3 places I called. For 4 year old, 600.00 A YEAR !!!! Plus the outfits. UM NO THANK YOU !!,I'll teach the girls LOL. for the 10 year old 800+ AYEAR !! Again Noway !!plus the outfits. We can buy a family pass to the pool for 65.00 that allows up to 6 ppl per day for the summer. Pool is open 7 days a week. Zoo pass for the family is 125.00 per year, also allows up to 6 family members. To me there's more out there thats cost little to nothing to keep them busy all year long. I dont see pouring money into a sport they may or may not like and being out the money to do so. Plus, I'm more into the *Family* get together than just a sport type thing. Since games here are all played on Fridays, Saturdays between the hours or 5- 6:30 means their Daddy will not be able to attend any of them. the things we do allows him to join us on Sundays and after work, heck, we even go and have a lunch at the park and he can come join us during his lunch hour. Means more to me this way and the kids LOVE having their daddy join us at the park even if it is for 1 hr.

Gymnastics 2x per week $85.00 for DD Lobb Ball $45.00 for the season. Swimming lessons are in the future at about $35.00 for 6 weeks. My rule is one thing at a time unless it is school related or sponsored. DD may do soccer or swimming next year in middle school. She says no cheerleading for her even w/ 5 years of gymnastics behind her. |

My 2 boys ages 8 and 14 both play ice hockey which is $700. apiece and then the equipment when it needs to be replaced or outgrown My 14 year old also plays JV ice hockey for school this is the equipment they need to play helmet mouth guard neck guard chest protector elbow pads gloves practice jersey hockey pants socks shin guards cup skates hockey stick and they are on travel teams and we have to drive them there very expensive sport, but they both love it and are good at it,my oldest has been playing for 9 years and my youngest has been playing for 5 years |

I agree with Carrie. My children enjoy what they do. I am not one of those moms that force them into these things. I pay SO much.. well, because, quite frankly, I can afford to. If I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't do it. My children love the park, the pool and blowing bubbles too. They also like soccer, gym, and ballet. We spend alot of FREE family time together also, but they enjoy getting out and being part of team. I think it is VITAL to development for children to learn good sportmanship and teamwork. |

Please don't get offended with my post. It wasn't mean to say yall dont spend Family time with sports. In my case this wouldn't happen as my DH works 6 days a week from 8 AM Till 6-6:30 PM. His only off day is Sunday. Thus sports wouldn't be a family thing for us. Whats the point in me taking them to every game and all that goes with it if I'm the ONLY one they can talk too about the game. It would be rather hard for them to say Daddy did you see that home run I hit,, Did you see that field goal I made. ( KWIM ) I played sports as a child I was also a cheerleader as well. I think in the 3 years I did this and my Brother was always on the football team My mother ( whom was a working mom raising 2 kids alone ) wasn't able 9 of the 10 games we played to see us. It was more like OK doing this so they dont have *Street time* while I work type thing. I was ALWAYS very disappointed when we had games to see my mom was not there or when my brother would say I made a TD. It's NOT that she didn't care, But she couldn't relate to this because she didn't see it. At the end of the season when we got rewards, It was hard to hear, is that your mom ? and the coaches, teammates, Leader all did say these things. It hurts to know you were singled out as a team member with a NON Showing mom. If my children wanted to be in sports they would be told this and then they can still do the sports, If it was non contact for my 8 year old and any *special need* sports for my 7 year old. My DD doesn't want to do sports right now, she into more of the reading, library, pool thing. I just want it to be a family deal, they dont get to see DH too much now as it is. I want them to be able to share their happy moments when their daddy can see it and be apart of it. Parks, lunches, swimming, BBQ's allows it to be a family event. When we do these things we play games, sports, swimming races, ect ect. It's the only thing I know of DH can be apart of. We dont have a *Normal* family life with the dad working a 40 hr a week job 5 days a week. So by taking yet another event and turning it into a ONLY MOM CAN SEE deal is not what they nor I want at this time. The kids enjoy the fishing trips on Sundays, the park, the pool, beach, ect with their dad being able to do these things with them. These are the memories they will carry for a life time. If I was to place them in sports, then they couldn't have these memories due to the games, out of town mets, pract, ect. ( KWIM ) I didn't mean for my post to sound like yall didn't share family time nor enjoy the outings as a family. Only meant this is OUR sports and how WE chose to do them. Sorry if I offended anyone was not my intent.

I'm not sure I even want to type. DS just made HS show choir and we were told upfront the costs would be $700 for outfits, $900 for travel, plus what the cost will be for perfomances. We were told it will be about $2500. Drama runs about $200 a year for costumes and performance fees. Guitar is about $600 a year. Camp is about $600 a year. DD plays basketball and it will run about $500 when you add up all the fees. She made her MS choir and it will run a couple of hundred dollars, we're not sure yet. Camp is about $500. She wanted to play tennis, but at $250 a month we had to tell her we couldn't afford it this year. She took dance this year and it was only about $200 with her costume. She was in drama this year, but that was FREE, We LOVE FREE!! She was also in future problem solvers which was another FREE!!

My other 2 children are 21, but spent a fortune on them with Karate and sports. My daughter (9 years old) is into Horse riding with a $50 per lesson price. We did dance and gymnatic's. We also do Girl Scouts (which I am the Service Unit Manager for) at the low price of $5 per month. We do awesome things that they would never do if they were not a scout!!!
