Etiquette question..thank you for a thank you?

My son's friend (teen) stayed with us for a few days while his parents were on a trip. They brought back a couple of food items for us as a thank you. Do we send them a thank you note for the gifts?? Thanks, Cookie

I would say no, they are giving you something for what you did for them. You might want to give them a call and say thank you, but I dont think you need to send a card. I would call just to at least acknowledge the gift.

That could go either way, really. I would send a thank you note, that is just me, tho. Some people would feel fine calling. I think the bottom line is to somehow acknowledge it. I would let them know, too, that you didn't do expecting anything in return, but sure do appreciate them thinking of you that way.

HTH.

I don't believe it's necessary from an etiquette viewpoint, but thanking someone for something with a phone call or card is never wrong.
