I'm A Redcross Reject !!!

Went today to donate blood for the blood drive and was told,Sorry your Iron is way too low.

My Iron count was a 32 and it has to be 38 or more. I was so sadden by this.

However, They did give me a cute little sticker that said Be Nice To Me I tried. , a T-shirt and Hat.

I told my friend Dang, I'm a REJECT lol....didn't think the Red Cross turned anyone down because of their Iron count, STD'S and Other stuff YES, but a Iron Count ?

Will have to try again later on I guess.

How VERY nice of you to try!!! Hopefully you can get that iron count up -- prenatal vitamins? or Slow FE (iron supplement) -- and then get them to draw a pint next time. That is good that they check. It could be very dangerous for YOU if they took blood from you if you are already slightly anemic.

I'm usually a reject every 3 out of 4 tries, but I don't give up. When we lived in the lower 48, I could try more often then here in Alaska. They only come about once every 6 months to the island for a Blood Drive.

I've been giving blood for nearly 30 years and I've been rejected several times for a low iron count.

I've never been able to give blood, except one time - my very FIRST time! - when I was a senior in high school. Every other time I've been turned down, due to being borderline anemic. I have always been that way ever since having my first child, and then the twins - I even was anemic during pregnancy, a little.

Since the last time I was turned down, back in 2003, I don't even try anymore, because I know that they won't let me give blood. If it wasn't for that, I would definitely donate blood! It's no big deal to me to do that.

Nice trying, though!!!

I was rejected last time for eczema in the area they put the needle in.

I give whenever there is a drive at work.

I'm AB+. I think my dad is B, so he gives when he can too. (or used to)

Put me with the rejects. I even with vitamins am borderline. When I know I am going to donate I take extra iron for like 4-5 days before. Right now I can't give due to high blood pressure.

My mom has been rejected before too for low iron.

You guys are all so good. The last time I gave blood, which was the first time I had done it in a few years, I got really, really sick about an hour afterwards. My mom and I went on a Saturday morning to give and were going to go have lunch about an hour or two after we were done. I even had a small breakfast, some crackers, and juice before I donated. My mom ended up having to drive me home - I couldn't even drive my own car. I was so sick and I climbed into bed and stayed there until the next morning. I'm terrified that it might happen again if I give blood.

I was rejected once because I didn't weigh enough. Those were the days! Now I can't donate because of a different issue.

Good for you for trying, OP!

DH can't give blood because he was in the service over seas for 3 years and ate the beef, so now he can't give for the rest of his life. It is hard because he is the one who organizes the blood drives at work and can't even give himself

Me I don't weigh enough and the one time I was boarderline I ended up really sick.

I get rejected 1/2 the time. They have to spin my blood down EVERY time. I've been donating for 30 years too.

When I was in my 20' and 30's, I was rejected for low blood pressure. Then in my 40's, I was ok. In my 50's my blood would clot before I could fill the bag.

I have been rejected before for being anemic. That hurt my feelings a little. What hurt my feelings a lot was that about 7 years ago they said that they would not accept my blood anymore because I'm from Europe (the question was: have you spent more than 6 months in Europe since 1980?). The first 16 years I was in this country I donated a total of 3 gallons, and that was fine. Now my whole family cannot donate anymore - that sucks!

I was rejected once because I was .5 degrees past the temperature limit..it's happened to me twice, but the first time they took my temperature again 5 mins later it was just barely ok.
