Does anyone know when colleges start looking at kids to recruit them to their college?? And, what are they looking for?? Do they start as early as the 9th grade??? Thanks.

college recruiting doesnt begin until kids have taken the PSAT because colleges get that info sent to them and until then they have no academic information on anyone. PSAT testing is available starting in 10th grade here for the students who want to take it early (generally the top of the glass) and 11th for everyone else. After regular SATs it's at its highest. there isnt anything in 9th because students dont even have any high school grades and i doubt colleges care about jr high school grades. the only exception would be sports ... colleges starting recruiting gifted athletes as early as possible.

My daughter was recruited for soccer. It is against policies you state to recruit before certain dates in the year. Soccer was In july or August of her junior year of h.s. Other sports have other dates. The financial offers for my children for academics seemed to come Thanksgiving to Easter of their senior year. Although you won't hear a thing about money until you fill out a FAFSA.

My 16 yr old is in 10th grade now and has been getting college stuff since 7th grade sporadically. He took the SATs when he was in 7th grade and again last year in 9th grade. He took the PSAT this year in 10th grade and the college mail has really been coming in now. He gets mail about 4 times a week and usually it is more than one thing. I know that they got the mailing info from the PSATs because my "smarty" did really well on the test but gave the wrong home address. LOL Everything that has been coming in has the wrong house number. ![]() Darlene

Starting in Junior High, colleges can start sending out mailings to students, BUT it has to be the generic type of mailing which is sent to all students. Colleges are not allowed to do the "personal" contacts until the junior year UNLESS the student initiates the contact. This is especially true, for athletes. Colleges can get fined for recruiting violations if they make contact to soon. I assume you are talking academic, getting admitted to the college. Most of the colleges are looking for well rounded students. They want good students who are involved in extra-curricular activities. If the student has an after-school job, this can rate as an activity. They generally have a chart with ACT or SAT scores with GPA. The activities are generally used as tie-breakers. It really depends on the college as to how many extra curricular activities a student needs to participate in to be admitted. It is really in the scholarship department where the activities make the biggest differrence. |

My daughter and son are juniors. Son gets sporadic mail and DD gets tons of mail from art schools as they visit her HS and view her portfolio regularly. What ticks me off is that DS gets stuff from the Military even after I took his name off the list to receive the info. I know they know he exists, but I'm sure they are getting his name/address from the school.

I am just beginning this process, but I thought that most of the big schools offered aid and scholarships after or along with acceptance. The early information that comes in the mail is informational/promotional brochures to generate interest in the school and get the child to apply there....oh, and also, all the junk from companies wanting to help you finance college, some legit, some a little shady. The stuff that comes really early...like 8th and 9th grade, I thought was an artifact of some children (including mine) who participated in a scholars program and took the SAT at a young age and the colleges think they are older than they are. Of course, my kid is just an well-above-average student taking an AP course-laden curriculum but not achieving a 4.0 or better on it and not an athlete, so maybe some kids are getting offers and just not mine. cj/ |
