When You go on Vacation, What Do You Do With Your Pet?

We are pet owners again, after about 4 1/2 years of not having a dog. Don't travel that much, but now that we have a "4th four-legged child", I am trying to figure out if he goes with us this summer, or do we board? I am not opposed to boarding for a short period of time, but we may be gone 10-12 days. Not only may he get anxious over the long period of time, but that bill might run $250........yikes. My daughter is already looking for pet-friendly hotels to our destination.

So, what does everyone do?

That would be a great solution. Wish we had one.

We take our lab with us when we travel too, either at a pet friendly hotel or camping in our travel trailer. BUT this August we're going to the Outer Banks thru our timeshare and they don't allow pets. Dh says we can either board her at the vet's office or at the place we bought her from (the lady owns a doggie day spa ). But I hate the thought of being away from her for 8 days.

We're still discussing what we're going to do tho, we may just take her with us and then board her each night at a place down there.

We have done the pet friendly hotel thing, but they don't want you to leave your dog in the room alone. If he is not a barker, that is ok, but ours barks if she thinks someone is at the door. Then you are kind of limited on what you can do on your trip. We have a friend with a dog that we swap. when we are gone they take ours and when they are gone, we take theirs. That way there is no cost involved and the dog is on a home with people, not at our house alone waiting for someone to let her out a few times a day. The only problem we have had is when we go on vacation together!

We are lucky that our families are pet friendly b/c our pets go with the kids!!! Or if we are going on vaca with the kiddies the doggies stay with their grandparents.

It depends on where we go. If we go to visit my family in FL, I can't take the dogs because my mom is allergic. Usually my best friend keeps them. We are going to NH in June, and we are taking them with us.

If we are camping, we take the dogs with us. They are like one of the kids.

If we are going somewhere for one or two nights, we might board them if the place is not pet friendly.

We have cats & fish, so we leave them at home and have someone come in and take care of them. It is either a neighbor or MIL & FIL who live nearby. If it is MIL & FIL, it is free. If it is a neighbor, depending on the individual, we will buy them somthing from our trip and/or a gift card to a local restaurant. Or, if it is a child, we usually buy them a t-shirt or something from our trip and also give them money. Either way, it's much cheaper than bording the cats and they are happier at home.

We just got back from Spring break and we had to board our beagle. She took a whole week to get back to normal when we got home. It was so sad. We had never left her before. We didn't have anyone to watch her and it was a huge decision but taking her wasn't an option.

We take our dogs with us. One of our dogs is quite elderly and not doing well at the moment, so it's going to be hard taking him with us this summer, but we'll have to make do.

I agree, we have a cat and a tank full of fish. Cats prefer to stay home. We bought one of those automatic fish feeders that feeds them every 12 hours.

If we are just gone for the weekend, we leave him in our laundry room. That's "his" room - he stays in there every night (I hate him prowling at night and waking me up). His litter box, food, water & bed are all in there. He likes that room, he sleeps in his bed in the afternoons when he doesn't have to. There's also a window he likes looking out of.

If we are gone for longer than just the weekend, we put everything in the basement and lock him down there. It's finished with carpet & furniture, is cool, and has 4 windows with a tile ledge he likes to look out of and he has a lot of room. My mom usually comes over a couple times while we're gone to check his food & water, but we leave a lot out for him.

We don't leave him loose in the house because he eats the plants.

We do not take our pets with us most of the time but I do hire someone to stay at the house and watch them. I have 2 big dogs and 4 cats. I pay about $30 per night.

The last time we hired someone, it was a girl that I go to college with. We have become friends and she needs the cash. It works out well for both of us. She was great this last time and we will def. use her when we go to Pittsburgh this fall to see a home football game.

I think the price is well worth the security of knowing that my animals are in their home and not being upset by boarding.

I board my dog at the vet's office. $15 a night. He has not been upset afterward. Thankfully, he likes it there. We have never left for more than 3 nights... 10 would be long.

I think having someone stay at your house and care for the pets there is the best option. That way the house isn't empty and they are happier. We are considering doing this the next time we go on vacation. How much would you pay for this?

When we go camping we take them with us. When we go on vacation we board them for the 3 of them for 7 days it is $210.00. Although the last time we couldn't leave our poodle due to her age. They wouldn't keep her because she is 13 years old. They said it was to much stress to put her under. We ended up just taking her with us.

we always either took or dogs with us or my mom came and looked after them. I have actually stayed with a very well off friends little dog while they went on vacation. their dog is elderly and the trama of being put in a kennel may be the end of him. I didnt charge anything but she send me a gaift card for 250.00.Nice!
this was for staying with the dog at nite only on thur, fri and sat. nites.
a dog that has been used to having a yard or a house to be albe to roam around in at will , will get depressed if they are locked in a cage all day. what kind of a vacation is this for the pets?

We take our two dogs with us EVERYWHERE. If we are going overnight only we leave the cat in the house if we are going for more than one night we get the house/catsitter.
