My POOR POOR baby!!!

I'm so sad.... I know it could be worse...just makes me sad

My youngest ds failed the hearing test they gave him back in Jan. (he's in Kindergarten) After rescheduling a few times (was sick once and then once the insurance was being switched) we finally went today and I had him checked out. After I got the note that said he failed I did start realizing that he was having trouble hearing certain things, and boy does he talk SOOO loud sometimes.... when I took him to our regulat family doctor for the referal to the specialist, she said there didn't appear to be any fluids in his ears at that time, so I sort of assumed it wasnt going to be so simple....

So the doctor said, no fluids in the ear, but he does have significant hearing loss in his left ear. Probably due to bone structures (???) and will probably need a hearing aid and then even possible much much later surgery to correct it. FOR NOW, the next step is come back in one month and do ALL the test over again, and a couple new ones, to make sure there is no change in that time.... My poor baby is going to have to have a hearing aid...

You know, when he was about 3 yrs old, I had his evaluated for speach therapy because everyone thought he was behind in speaking... he passed the evaluation just borderline...saying that he was just barely where he was supposed to be at his age...And that most of his problems were because he was just stubborn and would answer or do something (hmmm maybe he couldn't hear the requests...) Looking back I guess there were alot of signs the past couple years there was a problem...LUCKILY his other ear is 100% so it never effected his learning in school and did FANTASTIC!!! (top of his class!!)

At least he's not deaf or hard of hearing in both ears and at this point, the loss can be corrected with a hearing aid.
There's a 7 yr. old boy at church that is deaf from birth. He has a Cochlear implant and does very well with it.
Hopefully the tests will go fine and the corrections can be made soon.

My DD was 2 when she developed meningitis. She did well and seemed fine after. She had chicken pox at 4 and soon after developed Bells Palsy on the right side of her face. Her speech wasn't clear but most people could understand her ok. In kindergarten I had a speech evaluation done to make sure everything was ok. Her evaluation included a hearing test and she couldn't hear out of her right ear.

We had to repeat it a few times to make sure it was accurate. Eventually she had a hear aid made (tie-dyed pink was the in the ear piece color!) She really improved.

A few years later she kept telling me she could hear without the hearing aide and I told her no she couldn't. She told me the audiologist visited school and told her her hearing was perfect. I sat her down, told her that everyone has some type of disability- some you can see, some you can't. She has a hearing problem and has to wear a hearing aid for the rest of her life (Just like the ENT dr. told us she would have to!) The audiologist called me that night, told me that her hearing was 100% and she would repeat it frequently to keep an eye on it. Long story short, she has perfect hearing in both ears and there is no explanation why!!

The audiologist sent home an article she found in a journal telling how occas. people who have hearing loss due to meningitis regain their hearing.

Needless to say, after the disability speech and everything that happened, I will never win the mother of the year award!!

Every now and then my DH and I will be talking quietly and Elizabeth will say "I can hear you". Great, the deaf one hears our secrets!!!

I have kids for the entertainment they provide us!!

Good luck to you both!

Little ones adjust so fast to changes I am sure he will do fine with his hearing aid. I know he was doing great without it but it can only enhance his life. When you see how fast he adjusts, you will get used to it as well. Good luck with it!

I'm sorry to hear about your little guy. We want the best for our children, and it can be devastating to hear that there might be something wrong. My oldest two children have been the picture of perfect health, but we have had issues with our little one. He has had some hearing loss, and growth issues, and it can be difficult to deal with. It has also been frustrating for me when friends and family have told me things like "oh, he's just fine". I know he is wonderful, but I still worry about him.

I wish you the best, hopefully his hearing will clear up, and if not I hope the transition to hearing aid will be a smooth one.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Is it in one ear only? Hopefully the hearing aid will help out. As the others said, he'll adjust. Sometimes these things are harder on parents!

One thing that you can do is to look up sign language for children on the web. Teach him some simple sign language for things that frustrate him.

Hang tight. You are doing things the right way! What a lucky little boy.

sorry val to hear the news, but like everyone else said there is a lot they can do today for hearing loss, and he will now finally be able to hear a lot better with a hearing aid. I know the news is always devestating when something happens with our kiddos, but there is a bright side to it.

Thanks for the kind words!! Yes, its only the 1 ear, and so far up until now, Ds managed to do good with only one ear hearing at 100%...when he gets his hearing aid, he'll adjust and it will be fine....maybe finally he'll talk quieter....LOL thats the one thing I noticed he always talked SOO LOUD all the time. I know he'll be fine...we were talking and he has this idea now, that he will get a super Bionic ear and have super human hearing...(He's very creative with a huge imagination...and loves superheros)

Bless his little heart! I'm glad it wasn't worse, but I know you must feel so sad for him. ((hugs))

I'm sorry to hear of your son's condition.
Please ask you school if they have an amplification system for his calssroom. I have one in mine. It is a flat speaker on the wall and I wear a small microphone which amplifies my voice. This is very important so your son does not miss out or misinterpret what is being said in class until a hearing aid is ready for him, or the one that works best for him is found.

What a great attitude you have! You are so lucky that he doesn't have a speech problem and that he can be helped. Also, be thankful that it was found and it didn't affect this learning. There is this sweet boy in my ds 1st grade class who was left back because he had a hearing problem and no one knew! He needed surgery but his family couldn't afford it till this year. Best of luck to you and your son and his new super power ear!
