FIL sawed an old oil barrel in half, top to bottom, soldered the two pieces together, or screwed them together, not sure, so it is like a long grill. Then, DH made some grates out of stainless steel meshing stuff he had. It is HUGE, and you can put legs on it, if you like, or just keep it on the ground. I think there are small things on the bottom, too, so it won't roll. You can burn tree limbs in it or whatever, too. Personally, this thing is headed to the curb, as we have a gas grill, and this is just WAY too big for us. Want it???

We always wanted a fire pit and last year during end of season clearence at Wal-Mart they had the tables that had a fire pit in the middle and it came with 4 chairs. It is the best thing ever. We use it all the time almost every night when it isn't snowing (good Indiana weather). The chairs are the most comfortable thing and you can also take the fire pit container out of the table and use the extra tub it came with as a cooler with ice and such. Very nice and worth the money! Good luck in whatever you choose. Nicole |

We built our own firepit a few years ago and we LOVE it! We had a small, fenced in area within our fenced in backyard and we laid cement pavers inside of it. For the firepit, we used retaining wall blocks and created a large circle, three blocks high. Come to think of it, I think we dug the pit first, then laid the pavers and then stacked the blocks. I think. If you go to Home Depot or Lowe's they have "formula" sheets that will tell you how many blocks you'll need to create your project. We have enjoyed it so much! We use it year round for hot dogs, s'mores or just hanging out. It's a popular attraction for guests, too. Here are a couple of pics: Firepit #1 Firepit #2 We've added a bit to it since then, stools, lighting and a tiny bit of "landscaping". It looks a little fancier. |

My sil took an old trailer tire rim (as in tractor-trailer) and put it where he wanted it...dug down in the dirt about one half the depth of the wheel...them inbedded the wheel in the circle. It makes a great fire pit. He cut a piece of wood to fit as a cover to put on it when not in use. It's great sitting around the fire in the evenings. He found a man at the fall festival who was using wrought iron rods to build grates for over the fire to cook. that works out perfectly. The rods on each side have hooks at different levels to place the grate higher or closer to the fire. There's also a rod that fits the top to hang a large kettle over the fire.

If you want something that lasts and won't look horrible, stay away from the cheapy ones! we got one for Christmas a few years ago. And while it works great, it looks horrible. The one wheel melted the first time we used it and it has gotten all rusty! I mean it gets the job done, but we're now looking into something prettier.
