Summer School?

Anyone's kids going to summer school? My youngest son was recommended for math and reading summer school. I will never say no to summer school as I know that kids do regress if they are not doing some sort of schoolwork over the summer. I am surprised, though, that his summer school will meet for FOUR HOURS Mon-Fri for one month. I was thinking maybe two hours daily, but four? I believe that he is going to be a bit bummed about this, so I'll have to give him a little reward/incentive to keep him going.

Like I said, I will never say no to summer school, but this son gets all B's and C's. I was surprised that he was being recommended, but I will not challenge the teacher's recommendation.

Ironically, my other son, who is on the autism spectrum, isn't being offered summer school. Doesn't make sense to me, but if I had to guess, it would have to do with lack of budget.

They changed our summer school program this year. Now everyone is eligible and they are focusing on Science in our district. Last year my DS went because he was behind and I wanted him to have that push. This year I'm sending him so he does not regress and to see what he thinks of science. It's one month and half days. I think he will enjoy it.

None of my kids were offered it this year.

Their first year in public school the girls were behind in reading and were offered the opportunity. Our program is four hours a day for six weeks...seemed like a LONG time to me. I got a workbook for them each at Paul's Teacher Pet that is designed to be worked in over the summer between grades. They loved it. We also read, read, read. Two now read above grade level, one at grade level. So, we did okay. I checked with their teachers first because I didn't want to put them further behind by not sending them, but really felt that summer should be summer.

This summer we'll be working on multiplication facts. Both my almost fifth grader and almost fourth grader still really don't have them memorized which of course makes division tricky. My oldest will also work on spelling. She is a terrible speller!! But, all will be very casual, stress free, fun game type practice.

For your guy, it is only a month...and if the teacher really feels he needs it, I'd go for it and make the most of the time he is home.

My dd is going to a snotty private school next year for 6th grade, my dh works at, so dad is making her go to summer school. It goes from 9 to 3, 5 days a week for a month. And we get it half off because dad work there and it still cost us $850. Let's just say I agreed she should go because she is lazy and doesn't do anything over the summer and camp for a month would cost this much!

My daughter was suggested for going as well for language arts and math. She is going into the 5th grade and has a summer birthday so is about 1 yr younger than the other kids in her class. They are going to be going from 8:30-12:15 Mon-Thursday..

I think this will be good for her as she tends to get very lazy about school at times.

We don't really have summer school. We have a reading program for 6 weeks (?) in the summer. I really don't think it is right to take the kids summer away from them as long as they keep up the reading at home then NO to summer school.

My daughter broke her leg and required surgery a month ago. Unfortunately, she developed a staph infection and has been through a couple more surgeries and is on a wound vac so she's been medically discharged from the rest of the school year. She has to attend summer school to make up for the time she has missed. Here, it is is from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 for 6 weeks. I'm glad she's going, she really needs to get up to speed for next year. It is costing almost $200, but it's worth it to me if it will get her caught up and prepared for next year.
