I guess my son needs swimming lessons!

We met my firends from out of town at their hotel tonight and went to the pool there. I didn't bring my suit because I wasn't planning on going in. My kids know how to swim. Not perfectly, but they can doggie paddle and swim underwater. Well, I guess they forgot how to since last summer, because my one son almost drowned tonight! He went in the pool and realized the 4ft it stated was way over his head and started flailing, he tried to grab onto my other son to save himself. At this point, I didn't realize he really couldn't touch, figured he was playing around. But then I realized he really was in trouble. So I jump in with all my clothes on and grab him! We then have a nice evening playing in the whirlpool they have that is only 3 ft deep and I got to ride home with wet clothes. But atleast I had my son! Oh and he doesn't think he needs swimming lessons, just his life jacket next time.

Wow, thankgoodness you were keeping a close eye on him. This happened to me and also to my son.My brother saved me when I accidentally went passed the deepend.I was given many years of swimming lessons after that.
Also happened when my son and I are were swimming together. It was a small lake with a lot of people swimming in it.There was a rope that was suppose to mark where the deep water was but evidently there was a spot inside the rope that was deeper than the rest, like a dropoff and was very deep.He stumbled upon it and started drowning.I am an expert swimmer but never took a lifeguard class so I was not able to save him.Everytime I tried to bring him up and over it seemed he would just be bringing me down with him.I gave up and he went completely under and I yelled at some guy that was close by,to save my son,hes under the water.I was lucky ,the guy knew what he was doing and plunged under the water and brought my son to safety.Talk about having the life scared out of you.No harm done though, thankfully and I kept any swimming events after that at the kiddy pools!

If kids are ever going to be even close to water at any time in their lives, they need swimming lessons!
And life saving classes wouldn't hurt either.

I can't swim and I have always regretted that. My two kids, now in their 30's took some group swim lessons at the Y when they were 3 and 5. They learned the basics there so they could dog paddle, float and do some free style. We belonged to a neighborhood pool and that summer I hired one of the life guards to come in early by a 1/2 hour to give them private lessons. Didn't cost much in time or money. After the lessons at the Y it only took three or four lessons with him and they could swim the length of the pool and did a good job of all four swim strokes. After that they swam on the neighborhood pool summer swim team for quite a few years but those lessons were worth their weight in gold.

kids should definitely know how to swim. you never know when they'll be with a friend or whatever at some point and end up going to the pool and the mother/other kids might not even know yours cant swim.

You are really lucky to notice what was going on, some people don't even notice till it is too late. Check out your YMCA or local college they might have swimming lessons. I live in Miami and there is water all around us, all my children started swimming lesson about 2 years old. Some places even earlier (6 months old!)but I would have to get in the pool and do the lesson with the teacher. I don't know how to swim because I grew up in NY, I know no excuse.
