I have a male friend thats a Police Officer here in town, Well his girlfriend lives in a different state than ours. He told me the other night his relationship had to either be moved forward or something had to give.He wanted to make her a CD with sad love songs to send to her ( Dont know if its guilt CD or one to let her know he really misses her alot and wants to be together. He Stopped Loving Her Today is a song by country music artist George Jones that has been named in some surveys as the greatest country song of all time. It was a single on the album "I Am What I Am". The song was released in 1980, and was Jones's first #1 single in 6 years.

The melancholy song was written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman. It is about a man who "said I'll love her till I die." After she abandons him, he does indeed love her throughout the rest of his life. Only his death ends his feelings for her.

Jones stated in a 2002 CMT interview that he told the producer he "...would record the song," but did not think it would sell "because it's too damn sad." Jones also bet the record producer that it would do poorly. Jones gladly lost his bet, for it would be the biggest hit of his career and for nearly three decades would be his trademark song.
