How much do did you pay for your wedding cake?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but couldn't find it on a search. I know wedding cakes are difficult to make and it is something you want to be perfect on your "special" day, but I am in shock at how much they are on websites when you look at the per serving prices. I took a Wilton cake decorating course last year and know how much work can go into a cake.

I guess I am one of the cheap ones, because my hubby and I just eloped and my mom was sweet enough to make me a 3 tiered wedding cake for us. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I wished I had a nice wedding, but at the time it wasn't an option for us.

Just curious what "normal" people paid for their cakes if you don't mind sharing.

Well, 12 and half years ago, we paid $200 for ours. It was a 3 tiered cake. Yummy.

10 years ago... $160. But it was my mom's best friend's neighbor that made it, and she gave us a good deal. That included 2 huge trays of chocolate covered strawberries.

ours was free.

My Mom and my Aunt made the 8 tier cake.

Butter cream frosting with real pansies and rose petals that were sugar coated

top piece: butter pecan
piece 2 (going down): dark chocolate
piece 3: cherry and nut
piece 4: orange pineapple
piece 5: white chocolate
piece 6: banana nut
piece 7: vanilla toffee
piece 8: (the largest and the base): chocolate vanilla swirl.

arranged... top 3 pieces stacked with pillars in between, the rest "triangled" outward. (kind of like bowling pins standing upright).

tasty.

Had we had to pay for it, it wouldn't have been so large and when I checked the price 9 years ago, they wanted just over $400 to make a 5 tier cake.

$150 for three layers thirteen years ago. When the pictures came back, I discovered the frosting loops were crooked. DH noticed that day & said nothing. He is wise beyond his years.

10 years ago I paid 1.50 per person, the cake we ordered was a 3 tier and feed up to 100 people. It was 3 differnt flavors (each layers different) I kept the outside simple it was white and had a basket weave design. I had them put fresh flowers as decoration on the cake and that really made the cake beautiful.

DH and I went to the court house, he was in the military at the time and shipped out that afternoon, so we didn't have anything. When my DD got married she wanted a 3 tiered cake and a friend ours son is a college student and worked at a bakery. He drove down here 2 hours each way, baked her cake from scratch, made the buttercream frosting from scratch, lavender flowers on it, very nice. He also made a grooms cake, all chocolate from scratch, shaped and decorated like a guitar (both DD and her DH play). He baked and decorated all night long so it would be fresh, brought everything to the church, set up the cake, showed us how to cut it and take it apart after, all for $175. this was less than 2 years ago.

I think mine was about $300. I also had four little cakes for my matron of honor and bridesmaids. This was 14 years ago. Now that I think of it, Tuesday is our anniversary. Where has the time gone....LOL

Wow, wedding cakes were just as expensive back several years ago too. Thank you all for answering my question. I was on a website looking at photographs last night and the price per serving was $3.00. I think my eyeballs jumped out of my head, of course I have already said I am a very frugal person.

Our wedding cake 25 years ago was free! Relatives who owned a bakery made it for us as our wedding gift. My daughter was married last summer and we paid a little over $300 for her two layer, very simple wedding cake (we supplied the topper). I was shocked at how expensive cakes were.

12 years ago I paid $1.00 a slice or serving...I think it was about $100, not sure but I do remember it being a good cake!

Now it seems that the wedding cake is a work of art and can be $$$. Check out some of those wedding shows, you would be shocked at the prices for a cake.

This does not help you but ours was a gift. The gal who made it is ...get this...my DH's StepFather's Ex-Wife!

She is totally part of the family..always has been! It was such a beautiful cake that she booked several other weddings from it!

Lol, that almost sounds like us. For me it is:

Marriage license $15: my part $10, he only had a $50 and a $5. (didn't wanna break the $50, lol)
Gas at the time '98: $1.20 I think
Valentine's Day dinner on day we got engaged: $6.00 (maybe?) Every single stinking nice place was absolutely full b/c we left late and I was soooo hungry. I told him to go to Burger King and get me a burger and fries. Best darned burger and fries I'd ever had, lol. Guess I'll eat anything if I'm starving.

We paid $250 for our wedding cake 10 years ago.

It had 3 tiers in the middle and then 2 bridges on either side to 2 more tiers and a small fountain was underneath. It was totally worth it!

My cake is small and will only serve about 90 guests--this is my second marriage and we're inviting just family and close friends. The cake is $360. The groom's cake, a 3-D golf ball with edible tees, is $200. *32 more days and counting!!!!!!--Marilou

HOLY COW!!! I wish I could bake and decorate wedding cakes after reading this thread. I'm a little bit shocked at how much the cakes cost.

Ours was a gift from one of my friends growing up. It was so delicious and beautiful! I bought the decorations to put on it and it ended up costing around $50 in 1995.

We didn't have cake We had cupcakes! My Mom is a great cook and made several different varieties of gourmet cupcakes. They were really good. We also had other desserts . . . IMHO a cake wasn't worth the price . . .
