Any Nurses or Medical Assistants here? I have a question

HI Everyone
I have a question and I know I am probably over reacting but at the same time since I don't know anything about the medical field I paniced when I heard this LOL My dr sent me for blood work and I went to him yesterday and he said the results were fine but the platelette count was high and my c-reactive protein was also high. I asked what that meant and he said it was nothing to worry about and that was it (he had to leave to get to an emergency at the hospital) so I didnt get to ask him any questions so I am hoping there is someone on here who can tell me what it could mean (I figure it wouldnt say high in bold letters if it was a normal thing) Thanks in advance for any help

How high? Things will flag high if the upper limit of high is 10.0 and their level is 10.1. So it depends on how high the level is.

i see a heart doc my c reactive protein has been a little high before and he says not to worry
it means inflammation somewhere but he said it could be from exercise or anything. i guess it was not high enough for him to worry but it was in the high column. maybe you can call and just have him reassure you

My platelet count and crp are always high I have lupus and rheumatoid arthritis among other things and it the CRP can indicate inflammation, it depends on how high the results really are whether you need to worry. My platelet count they never seem concerned about even though I am concerned about it, although I think its one of my meds that does it.

If you are concerned and feel he just skipped by it all too fast call the office and ask the nurse if she can explain the results to you better , have them send you a copy of the lab test results for your records and if the nurse cant explain it to you ask her if the Doctor can call you back as it bothers you he seemed so unconcerned.

I personally keep copies of all my lab tests and x-rays etc, never know when another Dr may need them I hate having tests re-done within weeks of each other plus it gives them a baseline to follow, its something everyone imo should think about doing as they get older and start falling apart or like me have chronic health issues.

It sounds like it probably wasn't very high. I would probably me more concerned with the platelet count, although, I am not a doctor. I've worked in Cardiology for 15 years. I would be concerned that if your platelets are high you could be at risk for developing blood clots. I don't know anything about the other lab test. Why was your doctor running these tests to begin with? Routine physical? Ill? I was screened for everything under the sun last year and my sed rate was slightly elevated. That can be from just about anything like stress or a cold. So alot of it depends on the numbers as to how concerned you should be. Definately get a copy of your results and definately ask your doctor more questions. You are paying them for a service. You should not have to feel slighted because they have other patients. Yes, emergencies happen, but he can get back to you when there isn't an emergency. Just my opinion. But I've been dealing with doctors for a while. They hate to see me coming as a patient because I make sure I get all my questions answered. I know my body better than anyone. We all do. Best wishes.

You know thats interesting about the platelet count and blood clots. Back in September I had a Pulmonary Embolism and for the rest of my life I have to take blood thinners and its not fun, we had a scare 2 weeks ago where they thought I threw another clot thankfully it wasnt one. Going to see my Dr this week since my coumadin levels are off thanks to antibiotics and ask them about the platelet issue while I am there.

I've been an OB nurse for 22 yrs. Your daughter-in-law needs to call her doc or midwife and see what they recommend - they all tend to have slightly different opinions. Most prefer to know when their patients are taking over the counter meds so they can keep a record of it (and also of the illness). She doesn't have to wait til office hours to find out - they all have somebody on call 24/7. Often, a "triage nurse" will take the calls and will answer questions/give advice, so tell her to go ahead and give them a call. Hope she feels better soon!

Thank you all for the responses the tests were done because I have a problem with my right wrist, the dr told me he was almost 100% sure it was carpal tunnel but after the emg i was told it wasnt. So he ran blood work and sent me for an mri of my neck. Which showed that I dont have that "c" like curve in my spine and there is some degeneration. The dr said the numbers were high but not to be concerned because they werent that much over the normal level.
