Are you absolutely sure it's dead?
Last year we thought ours was broken until we had a "competent" service person come and look at it. First person who looked at it changed the inside thermostat, at our expense, said he couldn't tell what was causing our problem but it looked we needed a new one. He was an ignorant little troll and something told me not to trust him. I nagged DH until he called for another service person (from the same company). He checked it out and told us we had a faulty timer in the outside unit, there was also nothing wrong with the old thermostat.

Can you check and make sure your SP checked the outside unit thoroughly? From what the 2nd guy told me, not all units have these timers so many people just don't think to check for problems there.

Good luck and stay cool!

Hiya Nanci!! ;D

Well-

We have had 3 different /Companies come out and we can't seem to find the leak....
We Are already in a record heat wave and with the fires and allergies, I hate feeling helpless in this matter...
It has something to do with our copper pipping that's bad and the unit is 9 years old and we can't get a new part for it. We even had a welder try to patch it.

We purchased our unit from a local heating and air company.

They were great. I believe we spent right about $3000. We bought a Trane.

HTH

Good luck!

My Mother in law a few years ago purchased a TRANE at Sears I think..No idea what she paid and WE DO NOT TALK! So....I can't ask her ,

I thought our quotes were high but, that seems to be the norm...I wonder if it's because of where we are located?

Buy a Trane total comfort system between March 8, and May 31, 2007, to get up to $1,200 in mail-in rebates.

we had to buy a new one last week, largest unit they had in stock and it was only $3000. High end brand too. That quote seems a bit high.

Thanks everyone!!!

For those who have had theirs replaced..they say to get a warranty, we have to replace both units inside and out. Is that what you had to do as well?

If it is over a certain SEER rating (low energy use), you can take some sort of tax credit next year on your income taxes. I remember reading about it somewhere. Sorry so vague.

I know you must have FPL. Here is the site, they have some clues on how to buy a new a/c. Don't they have some rebate?? I couldn't find one but thought they did. Good luck!

We purchased a Trane last year too and it was just over 3,000. Check around and look for rebates.
