kids North Face jacket sizing question

I was wondering about the sizing on kids Northface jackets - the Denali in particular. Does it fit true to size, or a little large? My ds wears a size 8 right now and their jackets come in sz 8 or a 10-12. I am afraid the 8 might not be big enough next winter and that the 10-12 might swallow him ???
