For Crying out Loud, Stick to the subject!!!!

Okay so I posted something on the smoking post and someone else made another comment that got me thinking!! (I know rare for me...LOL)

My question is if a thread is put up asking if you have a certain habit or dislike or participate in an activity, do we really need everyone else's opinion? Isn't the point of the thread to see who does what activity?
Okay, so I am fairly new to coupons and one of my first threads that I posted was "Do you Spank"....Then you open the thread and I went on to say that that is what worked for us when the kids were a little younger and I encouraged others to tell what you did in your own home. Needless to say only a handful of ppl went onto actually telling what they did in their homes. Most went on to say how horrible spanking is for the child and yada, yada, yada! You can imagine some of the fun comments posted there!

Point is I really was interested in hearing how others handle the disciplining in their home and I got nothing. So I am not slamming anyone for there opinions but, do you think that we get way off subject when responding to the OP?

I enjoy you Carrie very very much and I agree. There is a difference between not "sticking to the subject" and giving your opinion. I don't see any point to ask if someone does something just yes or no. This is just MY opinion. I don't like the bickering or dissecting of posts but what is the point of just saying "yes" or "no" especially when it is such a controversial subject. What do we learn from a yes or no only answer? How does it enhance our experiences/interactions with each other? Don't you WANT to know why people do or don't do something? I myself love these insights. I want to understand peoples' reasons for things ESPECIALLY if their view is different from mine.

face it, there is some on these boards who want nothing more than to bash other users and wait for the chance to take something simple that they posted and turn it into a huge fight. about every thing you say can be taken different ways and they thrive on blasting someone for something .

doesn't it get old though when you ask for something as an OP and something totally different happens? I too enjoy different opinions and life stories but, (refering back to my OP about what you do in your home regarding the discipline of your child) when I am asking to see what goes on in your home I want to know about you, not why you think everyone else is wrong.
I grew up believing that you state your case on why you do something this particular way and not bashing others, Sorta like that saying (and one of our own lovely couponers has this saying with her signature, "Never argue with an idiot b/c ppl looking in from the outside might not be able to tell the difference"!! I love that statement its so funny and true!

Well, I am totally confused at whether I am the culprit here or not, since I got totally ragged on in the smoking post.

I think in a poll, that it is a good to stick to the topic and to keep input to your own personal experiences and observations. For example, if the question is "Do you spank?", I personally think each poster should answer the question as well as providing their own personal whys or why nots (to me, that is the interesting part and where I learn something every time). Because the question was not "Do you think other people should spank?" or "Do you think other people who spank are child abusers?", then I don't think people should be espousing their opinions on those subjects and trying to convince others of the errors of their ways.

I the topic asks for opinions, that's a totally different story and let the games begin! (on topic, of course)

Even though I think all that....I am definitely guilty of getting off subject and meandering wherever my little pea brain takes me at any given moment. LOL

P.S. i think i'm saying the same thing as Vicki

We get off subject because someone disagrees with someone elses opinion of a subject and feels compelled to voice their opinion. I think we do need to share opinions, but let's at least be nice about it!

In the beginning of the new Cafe people were nice, but now I am getting afraid to post.

I made a joke on another thread and got jumped, it was a joke nothing more and I am sorry the posted took offense. I even told her it was a joke, but no reply, just more jabs. We should be able to have different opinions without one persons being right and anothers being wrong.

Btw, I think I went off subject.

I still think this board is much better than many others. There will always be negative people everywhere you go but for the most part MC is a good nice place to be.

Getting off topic is sticky sometimes because whether we like it or not one thing does lead to another and in life everything and everyone is basically intertwined.

I'm not afraid to post! That's obvious eh?

I still haven't voted either because I can't say that I do any of those things 100% of the time.

I try to stay on topic but I also don't really mind when it goes off topic. I don't like when people get upset and mean toward one another but also realize that it will pass once we move on to a new topic.

I enjoy reading these boards and hearing everyone's opinions. If it is a thread that is not interesting to me, I just don't read it.
