Spinoff: What age do you consider is OLD?

To me, 80 is old... I am in my 40's.

What age do you consider as OLD!

The 'older actor' thread got me thinking.

Love that answer.....I don't know that I really have a concrete concept of old. I think it's amazing how as you get older your concept of old changes and expands. When I was a kid I thought 20 was old, not that I'm in my 30's I don't really think of someone as being old so much....I don't think my parents are old, and their late 50's, and I still see my 80 something grandma as being young, but my grandpa I do see as old, but maybe because of the health problems he has suffered through......

The older I get, the more that number gets moved back, LOL.
From a teenager until about my mid 20's, anyone around 40 was old to me. Then when I got close to 30 anyone around 50 was old to me.
I'll be 40 this year and now I guess I look at people around 70 or 80 as old. Give me a few years and it'll be 100 that I consider old.

You describe how my perception of 'old' has changed through the years.

My grandmother and my father-in-law are both 87 but FIL seems so much older -- probably because of health problems (emphysema). Yet, he is sharper mentally than my grandmother.

Good answer Squeak!

This is pretty true for me. I am in my early 30's and 50 seems "older" and 60 seems "old". There are people I know in their 40's that I consider "old" be it there look or the way they act. I think "older" is younger than "old" by a good 10 years or so

Actually I was thinking about my answer and I think this women I know is really old and she's maybe 40 but my FIL is 54 and he seems my age, he is really fun to be around. I don't think about old really as a number but, more an attitude. Most of my friends have at least 10+ years on me but I never think of them as older. Is all about the tude!!

That sounds like a cliche, but really, it's true. When my grandmother passed at 84 she didn't seem all that old to me, but I've known 40-year-olds who were ancient.

I remember when I was in grammar school we had a party for my mom's 2nd husband and he was turning 36 and I though WOW was he old. That's pretty young when it finally gets here though.

I'm 36 and 80+ seems old to me.

My grandparents are both well into their 90's and Grandpa is just miserable, nothing works right anymore, he's very dependent and poor grandma has her hands full. They have aged a lot in the last 5 years. We live very old in my family (into the 100's), so if all goes well I have a long time before I'm old!

I am 62 and I still don't feel old.
DH is 67 and he isn't old either.
We are square dancers and most of our friends are our age or older, some much older and they don't seem old either. I think square dancing keeps ya young!
A few years ago we danced in a club with a man who was almost 90 and was very slow. He did seem old to me.

I agree.....I have a great aunt that is 96 years YOUNG! She is the most amazing woman I have ever met....she lost her husband of 70+ years just a year or two ago, but she still has her wits about her. She bakes, cleans.....even drove until a couple of years ago! I hope I'm half as spry at half her age!

I asked my hubby and my 12 year old son what they thought was old.... here is what they said.....

My 12 year old said that 80 is old to him.
My hubby who is 36 said that 60 is old to him. He said that he thinks he feels this way because he comes from a family that tends to die young. He thinks that has a lot to do with how people see age.

My family tends to live a long time. I think that 80 is old. I also think that "oldness" depends a lot on health and activity level.

My BF and I were just talking about this today. I am 45. I think 70 is old because I know people in their 60s and some of them can easily pass for their 40s because they are healthy and happy. Others look and act old and have many medical issues.
Sometimes it's a matter of the person not the age I see homeless men and women who may be just in their 40s and they are definitely old. They look old their bodies are worn out, etc.
