freecycle posts

What are some things you would NEVER take from a freecycle board?

I keep seeing this particular post day in and day out...apparently no one wants it either!

"I have three boxes full of Victoria Secret panties, they have been used but no longer fit me because the material is too firm"

(read: they don't fit me because I gained too much weight...it doesn't have anything to do with the "firmness" of the material!)

Would you take someone's underwear? I don't think I would..I don't think there is enough bleach in the world that would make them sterile enough for me. LOL

~*~

Our freecycle board locally, is nothing but a huge "want" list; and not just normal stuff that would otherwise go to the trash dumps!!

In recent weeks I have seen the following posts:

"my friends daughter lost her house in a fire and she has 6 kids. They need NEW WITH TAGS clothing, a running car 2004 or newer, NEW little tykes toys and a bed (6 kids one bed? uh, right)"

"I am looking for a riding lawn mower without any problems with it" (like who would put a good riding lawn mower without problems into the trash??)

"I NEED to have a 2005 or newer car. Nothing wrong with it and it has to have new tires" (again...who would throw away a perfectly running vehicle"

It's disgusting ... people have gotten away from the original concept of Freecycle and the moderators seem to be unwilling to curb the "wants".

Ew, ew and double EW! No way would I take someone's used undies....VS or not! That is just gross. I agree about some of the wanted posts, on my freecycle board I see the same type of posts. I know some people are in need of certain things but to expect a fairly new car, that works perfectly for $0....I don't think so.

I agree with the wants of some people. I know they probably could use a car that doesn't have mechanical problem that would cost money to fix that they don't have, but a 2005 or newer...really.
I have tried to be economic in my life and find a car a piece of equipment that gets me places I want to go...not a status symbol. I drive a 1997 auto with 120,000 miles. It is still running and I intend to drive it until repaiing it is outrageously epensive. We have ALWAYS maintained our cars and given them preventative maintence to get the life out of them. My DH will ask me if I want a new car when this one needs new tires, a repair, etc. My answer is, "Do you want to pay $400 this month to get it back into peak condition, or $400 a month for the next 3 - 5 years for a new one?"
I don't mean to generalize, but if people expect to be given things like that will they really take care of and appreciate something that was handed over to them more than something they had to work for?
I would never take underwear, and sanything I couldn't wash, bleach, or scald to sanitize..ex: upolstered furniture. My own dirt is bad enough I do not want to contend with anyone else's.

How about a box of oatmeal that has been opened but there are about 3 packets left. Someone actually did take it too! I felt weird offering up some unopened baby cereal that was still shrink wrapped. It was taken too! Ours is not as bad as what you all are talking about though. Our moderator has banned any posts detailing any kind of sob story.

I still have mixed feelings about freecycle. Once, I got a lot of wonderful baby clothing, and a brand new diaper bag. That really helped us out.

There was a post this past year though: They wanted a 2004 or newer Volvo station wagon, with leather seats and a sun roof, and it had to have been hand washed... I truly am a gullible person, and am often not sure if someone is joking or not. If this was a joke, it's kind of funny, because people can be so greedy. But if they were serious? Yikes!

Freecycle supposedly has very strict rules about what can and cannot be requested/posted, etc. It is usually up to each individual mod/group owner to "moderate" the group. So, I believe I would blame the mods for letting these posts through. You can actually report such posts to Frecycle.com. Dunno if you want to go through the trouble or not..and I don't know if it does any good.

I love love love our freecycle!! There is a lady that runs a food pantry that has give away hundreds of loaves on freecycle since she has huge amount of leftovers. I haven't bough a loaf of bread all year! she also gives away bags of apples and tomatos.. she is a wonderful woman!

I did not pay out a DIME in baby formula due to our freecyclers. I've gotten coupons/clothing/clothes and toys for the boys... (I"ll pass on the underwear!)
We have a few ridiculous people that want off the wall stuff but the rest of us usually make them feel stupid enough that they leave the board!
I've made plenty of friends.. some that I go to their house every year and watch the parade in their town. Ours has been very successfull , and if there are any massillon freecyclers on here... "HELLO!!"

I will pass on the used underwear.

But if anyone happens to have an extra bag of money or an even more rare money tree that they are not using, I will come and pick it up. Heck, I will dig the tree up if I have to. LOL

Requests like the ones mentioned in the other posts are the reason that I unsubscribed to our freecycle.

Yeah, me too. I read the requests for quite some time just for the amusement factor. However, after a while even that got old.

I see lots of requests for laptop computers with current software in working order. Um -- like anyone is going to toss out one of those.

I've used Freecycle to get rid of a few things that otherwise would have gone to the trash -- empty babyfood jars went really fast, as did bags of fabric scraps. I have never received anything from another Freecycle-er, however.

Well, I am still driving a 1994 minivan with 140,000+ miles on it. Sliding door on only one side--only 2 cupholders, no cd player....BUT it has never been in an accident, AND it is paid for and is MINE and I do NOT have to pay 400 - 600 dollars a month to get me from point A to point B......and when both of my kids want to take a friend each to somewhere we might be going, we can all go in one car. Would I LOVE to have a new car with leather seats, gps system, butt warmers, and a chauffer? HECK YEAH. But would I expect a handout for someting as frivolous as that...not in this lifetime.
I have recycled many things out of my house on FC (some after the first 4 people said they were coming and never showed up ), but, because of the no-shows, and the greediness shown by one or three people who left a bad taste in my mouth, I rarely even look at my local site anymore. Unfortunate, because I know that real good could come out of FC if people did not choose to abuse it.....

That's another problem with our freecycle!!! I have given away (or tried) so many nice things--not "nwt" items, but stuff in great shape and there were tons of no shows!

When we moved from our apartment into our new house, there were a whole bunch of items that I had bought specifically for the color scheme of the new house...so all the older items like towels, wash cloths, curtains, etc I tried to freecycle....

they don't show up!

I quit offering. I get the ads daily, but seldom reply.

I love freecycle. There are always people who don't show up no matter what. There are always people begging for things whether on freecycle on the corner with a sign or going to every social service agency to get whatever they can for free.
Don't let that stop you. Freecycle has kept literally tons of things out of the landfill since its' inception.
I would never take someone's used underwear but come on you can wash them in hot water or bleach or use them for an art project or something.

People are different. I would not beg for a new car, I work two or more jobs whatever is neccessary to pay my own way. I have never taken anything from freecycle but I love giving my stuff away to people who will use it.

Red face finding a freecycle board locally?

How do you find out if there is one your area? I would love to chock it out. Thanks, Donna

You might be surprised! I got a perfectly good laptop that was being tossed out. The previous owner works in the industry and buys all the latest and greatest high tech stuff. The laptop he threw out was just a couple of years old.

When I sold my house last summer, it was awesome! They loved me and vice versa!!

I gave away some really nice stuff that I just had no room for anymore!!!!

((my sister when she was in need got some really nice clothes for her daughter))

FREECYCLE is awesome for those who need it, what kills me are the re-sellers.
Like when you see your stuff at the FLEAMARKET!

All in ALL it was a great expierence!!

I tell people, don't throw that away!!!! Post it at FREE CYCLE!!! ((usually the 5th person will actually come for the pick up))

your case is once in a blue moon. But the difference is, the person you got the laptop from posted it was available...unless...of course... you sent this really long sob story about how you lost everything you own and NEED to have a laptop with certain software on it, blah, blah, blah.

There is a difference between accepting an offer of good will (and good fortune) and begging and pulling heart strings to get something.
