Question about Depro Provera

I just got my first shot a month ago. I didn't have many other options for birth control because of other circumstances so I didn't get a chance to research it. I have not had any breakthrough bleeding that they told me could happen. BUt my only ovary I have left has been hurting all day. It's hurting like when I try to ovulate. Not cramps. However I thought with these shots your body didn't ovulate. Does anyone have any experience with this and can let me know if this is normal? I lost my other ovary because of ovarian cysts so I try to be very aware of my body.

When I first started on it I had some pain like I was ovulating the fist month afterwards and I had a small amount of bleeding you could call it breakthrough bleeding because it wasnt enough for a pad or tampon, a panty liner sufficed. In some woman my old OB/Gyn told me they continue to have light periods the first 4 months sometimes the first year. I started on the shot not for birth control as DH had the big "v" done they did it because I had a fibroid the size of a quarter pounder with cheese and I have endometriosis also and my periods were a nightmare only thing that helped with the pain was vicodin. I havent had a period since July of 2002 and you dont know how wonderful it is. I dont get my shots at the doctors office my DH gives them to me saves me a visit and co-pay.

Watch it, it may just be a case of breakthrough bleeding and your body getting used to the new hormones in your body.

Oh man...wish you hadn't started it! I used to take it and I tell you, I didn't experience what you are BUT I TOTALLY lost my sex drive I have been off of it for 2 years but I still haven't regained it back as much as I would like. I also got VERY forgetful. My doctor thought I might have some kind of early alzheimers (I'm in my early 30's so this would have been my late 20's). Doctor finally said it was the depo and that research showed that it *could* be a side effect. That has never gotten better It was scary. It totally changed me and not for the better. I would suggest getting off of it ASAP!

Here is a great board where women have shared their horror stories about depo. I"m sure someone has a story like yours

I've been on it for ten years and haven't had a single problem. I've heard of many side effects such as headaches, weight gain, etc. Nothing for me. I love it!

I was considering this after the birth of my 2nd child & my OB said NO WAY, I would never recommend this to anyone. The side affects outweigh the benefits by far, so I took her advice & I am so happy that I did. I too have heard so many bad stories on Depo.

Arrow Oh gosh!

I was on this after one of my sons was born and I am here to tell you that was the most horrible experience I have ever encountered....Not just physically, but mentally.

I nearly lost my mind. I was happy, depressed, mad, all wrapped in one! Could snap at any second.

I didn't have a period for a year..which sounds nice, but it's not. Your body was made to menustrate (sp?). It was horrible. Then after I got off the shot, got my period, I was not right for years. Break through here and there at any time....It sucks!

And the sex drive as the other poster stated....I too had Zero, Zilch!

PAIN....I had it too. It was awful. It wasn't necessarily like 'cramping' but a pain....

Everytime that someone asks about depo, I chime in! I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Hope you start to feel better soon.

I was on this for 5 years and besides a little weight gain I had no side effects. I loved not having that time of the month.

I maybe wrong as it has been awhile since I used it. But I thought you still ovulate but the shot changed the lining in your uterus.

I was on Depo for almost ten years and LOVED it!!!!! No side effects (other than weight gain, BUT that likely was not due to the Depo). Initially I had some break-through bleeding, but NONE after that for almost ten years. It took me about 6-9 months after I went off of it to get back into a regular cycle of having my period again. This is also how long it took us to conceive. I would recommend it to anyone!
