Ours only needed a land line if you had another reciever. The first reciever was free, but to hook up the second they charged you a monthly fee unless you had it plugged into a landline? No idea, but that's what the man said.

I have TWO receivers, NO phone line....NEVER had a problem.....And NO tivo. I am almost certain that it has nothing to do with phone line. I have several members of immediate family that work for Directv and am pretty knowledgeable.

We have Dish Network and we have to have the receiver plugged into a landline phone or we will get charged a $5 fee. It might be as simple as waiting until they are open tomorrow and calling to let them know that there is no longer a telephone line in the home... which might mean the extra fee. Like I said though, we do not have DirecTV |

Yes, we have DirectTV w/ Tivo. The only reason you need to be plugged in to a phone line is so that they can charge you for any Pay Per Views and can do any software upgrades which are pretty rare. All the televised program information is transmitted by the satellite, not the phone line. Is it definitely a "TiVo" DVR?? Most people refer to their DVRs as TiVos like people refer to all copiers as Xerox machines. Same concept, different technology. I should add....since we have never plugged into the phone, our receiver does give us a message: "You have not made a call in 846 days. Please connect blah, blah, blah..." All you have to do is hit the "select" or "enter" button on the remote to clear the message and move on with watching your recorded programs. This is a pretty obvious fix.....so.......if that doesn't work, you definitely may need technical support. |

We have 4 receivers and we do not have a land line hooked to any of them. I didnt get to read all the posts but hope that the tv is up and running soon. Darlene

We (the company I work for) supply the data for TiVo, and although I don't have one myself, my understanding is that you have to have a landline in order to have the TiVo service.

We have DirectTv in 4 rooms, 2 that have Tivo. The ones that have TiVo we have phone lines connected too. We were told that we needed landlines connected to the Tivo, because that is how they keep the menus, shows, and season passes up to date. When our phone line comes unplugged in the living room, we cannot go very far ahead on the Tivo to pick things to record, but have never not been able to use it, and sometimes it would be left unplugged for weeks or months before we noticed... You don't need a land line at all. It's handy for pay per view but not needed although they will tell you it is. I can't seem to find the article anymore but there used to be a link here to it. It talked about how DirectTV lies about having to have a phone line they use it to monitor viewing habits. DirectTV Techs: Policy Makes Lying Part Of Job - Problem Solvers News Story - WKMG Orlando

Wow. I can't say that I'm surprised, though. Do a google for "problems with Directv DVR" and see what all pops up. They are not the most honorable company for sure. We've been a customer for about 7 years now and are increasingly becoming disatisfied. As soon as our contract is up, we'll be looking elsewhere. To the OP, good luck with customer service. You'll more than likely need it. |
