Drive-Ins...do you ever go?

We went to see Shrek the 3rd and Spiderman 3 at the Drive-In on Sunday night, and when I was telling a friend she seemed confused, couldn't figure out why we would want to go.......

I think it's a blast, and economical at the same time. We are a family of 8, this drive in charges by the carload, and it's 10 bucks on Fri, Sat and on Sunday thru Thurs its 5. Plus we lay down our back seats everyone gets comfy and if the kids get squirmy or chatty they are not bothering anyone. We take whatever snacks we want and usually have a cooler, and when it's nice DH and I take lawn chairs and sit outside.....
Just wondering if anyone else goes to the Drive-In? Or is my family to just weird?

Hubby takes the kids a few times each summer. Ours is only open Fri-Sun. It's $5 for adults and $3 for kids 3-11. They play two movies. It's so much cheaper to go there than the regular movies. Plus, if Eryn acts up she's not bothering anyone buy hubby and my oldest.

We have 2 here, a little bit of a drive but love to go. i like double feature night. moving to NJ probably wont go as much their really strict on outside food items brought in, more of a "buy it here cause your not bringing it in" type thing, well you can buy some kinda pass to bring outside stuff in but then your still paying more than you would just bringing the food.

We have one about 30 minutes away. We try to take the girls at least once each summer. We all love it. I can't remember the prices - it's per person, but a lot less than the theater. We also take our own snacks and lawn chairs. We have a Tahoe, the girls like for us to park it backwards to they can lay down and watch. It's a fun family night out.

We have one near me. It's $5 for adults, and kids 11 and under are free. www.edendrivein.com

One of the reasons we don't go is the movie doesn't start til 8:45pm, which is pretty late for my kids.

We go almost every weekend. Except when they keep showing the same movie for more than 1 weekend. The boys love it. Plus it's CHEAP!! We microwave some popcorn before we go and wrap it in a towel so it stays hot. Our DS-12 can't sit through a movie unless it really gets his attention so we park towards the back so he can romp around if he needs too. Ours is $5 for anyone over 12. Here's a link to ours in case anyone is near and wants to go. Calvert Drive-In Theatre

Funny you brought this up. Sparky just sent me an email telling me about a drive in that is near us. We were going to go this weekend but ended up working in the yard and doing stuff around the house and were wiped out when it would have been time to leave.

I think that we are going to try and take the kids in the next couple weekends.

I agree, drive-in are, unfortunately, a dying breed. Have taken my kids to them 3 or 4 times, but have to drive over an hour to get to one each way....and it is the ONLY drive-in withing 100 miles, so if you don't get there really really early, forget even getting in. It is something different and a treat for the kids to go. We usually go in the summer. Ours let us bring in whatever food and beverage we want and price is $5.00 per head. Cheaper than walk-ins (even matinees) and the food at theatres are always more for us than ticket prices so the drive-in is a relative bargain for us (even factoring in gas.)

This takes me back to my childhood! I loved going when we were kids. As a matter of fact, when we go visit grandparents, we turn at the old drive-in screen. It's a big and yellow and still standing -- but it is closed.

Unfortunately, all of the drive-ins around here have closed. It is sad.

We go every summer when we vacation on Cape cod. I have to say that for me, the idea of it is better than the reality. The cost is per person- so it is about the same or more than the bargain matinees we usually go to. I have a hard time hearing the speaker outside the car, and it usually gets pretty cold mid-movie so I always end up inside the car. Then the visibility from in the car is a problem. So, I like going but I don't know why- probably because it is a tradition.

When we lived in Northern Cincinnati...there was a bonafide drive-in in Hamilton, Ohio. We used to go frequently...

now that we are back home in Michigan...regular drive-ins do NOT exist anymore. However, there must have been a strong pulling to childhood days, because in the summer time, there is a sports plaza in Redford (well it's on the border of Livonia) that sets up their parking lot with 3 different screens for movies.

Seems weird...but it works.

My MIL is first from Kiev, but has lived in NYC for 20 years...she has NEVER, EVER been to a drive-in...so we took her last summer for her "first time".

We got there early...we had a soccer ball and kicked it around the parking lot until it got dark enough for the movie to start. It was a great experience for her (and great bonding time for us).

I'm sure that's an interesting drive in to go to.

I haven't been to one in over 30 years.
I mostly remember fighting mosquitos!
And then there was the time we went with MIL.
As usual my kids didn't behave well enough for her.

Hubby and I went to one around 10 years ago. The closest one hear is about an hour away. Somehow we got stuck between two large families with trucks and needless to say we couldn't hear the movie because the families were so loud. Unfortunately there wasn't another spot we could go and park either. It was packed full of people. We talk about going back to try it again, but haven't done it yet.

We have one about 15 minutes from our house. We love to go. It's $9 per carload. They show double features a lot on the weekends. We haven't been yet this season but the girls and I will probably go before summer's over. It does start late, like someone else mentioned but we don't mind. It starts around 8:00 when it's dark.
Sometimes we take our own food and other times we eat tons of junk there. And we have been known to take drinks and buy food or take some food and buy some food. Of course my kids would rather buy food there!
Now you have me wanting to go to the drive in(my dd calls it the drive thru, lol).

We try to go anytime there is a decent movie playing. We live about 20 mins from one. Here it's $6/adult and 12 & under are free.
Most the time they're playing the newly released movies so it's great! Last week they had Pirates playing but we had already made plans so we didn't get to go.
I always run to the grocery and grab "movie essentials". Gummy worms, popcorn, sodas, twizzlers and anything else we think of.
Around the 2nd week of June they start offering large Pizza Hut pizzas for $10 each too. We can have an entire night out with the family for less than $25! Definately better than going to a theater.

When we lived in TN we did. Only once though. We put headphones on dd and plugged her into the DVD player. She ate and watched her movie while we watched American Wedding.

Nowadays you listen via your car radio. I guess the speakers hanging on the window are a thing of the past.

one here is FM only the other is FM and speakers so you can use the speakers if you really want the drive in experience.

OMG !! I had no idea you could listen with your FM radio !! That is great. We will definitely have to find one to go to now. I thought you still had to listen to the speakers and that is what kind of ruined it for our last time to one. We couldn't hear a single thing from the movie because it was so loud outside from other people.

I have been here:
Fayetteville, AR

and here:
Monte Vista, CO
This one is extremely cool. It actually has a motel built so that you can watch the movie from you room (they pipe in the sound).

and here:
Butte-Silverbow, MT

and here:
Columbia Falls, MT

We took the kids to see Shrek 3 at the Silverbow over Memorial Day weekend. And we'll probably be going back. It's about an hour from our house. The drive is absolutely GORGEOUS!

You all are making me jealous with how cheap the drive in is! The closest one to me is about an hour drive with out traffic! I remember going to one when I was little, don't remember the movie but the playground and the food court and fighting with my sisters and brother for a good spot in the car!

I think we are going to have to do a drive in this summer on our trip up the east coast!

Drive in New Hampshire $20 a carload up to 6 people

We live about 35-40 minutes awayfrom Milford, New Hampshire's Drive In theater. If you are not early, you might not get in. We never have trouble with mosquitoes because we park in the middle of the yard. The mosquitoes bite the people near the edges of the lot and don't need us by the time they find us. We go two to three times some years, but we don't remember going at all last year. In New Hampshire our season is May to September. We've already been once to see Spiderman 3 and Shrek the Third. It was $20 for up to 6 people. We had six people. Once we got there we were surprised to find my brother and his family there. (They live in the same town as the drive in.) It was already his second time there this season. We bring a cooler with twist top individual sodas (2 per person) and store bought chips, popcorn and Doritos, plus a bag of cookies. Next day the little ones have to clean the car out. It's so fun.
