My 13yr old son is breaking out all over his face. There are so many products out there i'm confused which one i should get him.

Which does your son use and how is it working for him.

if it's serious and not just the occasional teen break out, i'd really recommend seeing a dermatologist. the over the counter stuff isnt suited for that and can even overdry and make it worse.

Right now its not extreme and not very serious.I was thinking of proactive, but avoiding it because of it being pricey.
But like i said its not extremely bad imo,son may think otherwise though.

I ordered the Proactive system for my 13 year old and it was too many steps for him...all three of them! So, he never used it, inspite of my hounding him! Just a heads up that it does take a little doing...

If you have decent health insurance, take him to a derm. Ours covers the visit with a $10 copay, and the medications were $10 each too. YMMV.

My oldest who is 16 has been using the Neutrogena system for years, it is similar to Pro_Active (which he used and did not have as good of results). But it is time consuming.

The dermotologist gave him Retin A and some sort of wipes that dried his sking out terribly.

I think with younger teens the easier the better, like a Clearsil pad that he can use a couple times of day would probably work wonders.

My 50 year old husband still has problems with acne on his back. Several years ago, he saw the Doc who gave him a Rx for Benzoyl Peroxide. It was OTC and expensive. Well, it did the trick . I looked around and I found the same ingredient in Oxy daily wash. It is $5+ a bottle at Kmart, CVS, Walgreens etc. If your teenager is just starting to have problems, this might be an easy first step. By the way, my husband thinks he has VERY sensitive skin (NOT!) and this does not irritate him or dry him out.

My son uses the Avon products, which are reasonably priced and seem to work very well for him.

I have a 15 y.o

we use the 3 step stystem by Clinique. It costs about $50 for the 3 steps..but lasts for months. I even use it, does not dry out skin too bad and actually shows improvement.

I've been using proactive for 7 years, works well for me but I'm not a teen. I'd say go to a dermatologist if you have health insurance, you'll be so glad you did.

My son has very bad acne and I was very shocked to see your reply! I pulled this out and started using this on him, and within ONE DAY I saw a difference!!! I truly believe this stuff is gold!

Yogurt also helps. When my son eats yogurt (not the drinks or danimals-too much sugar-but rather the all naturals, plain or Fruit on bottom) every day, his acne literally disappears.

He didn't believe me, but we have tested and it is fact. The yogurt must get rid of the bad bacteria in his body that might be causing the acne..not sure..but we sure see a remarkable difference when he eats it and when he doesn't!

I dont have a son but a DD who has been going thru this for a few years and we were 1 step away from
accutane but my insurance doesnt cover it enough id still have to pay 250.00 a month for it.
the DR. has her on bactrium and a cream called differen spelling? this has work the best out of everything
we have used over the counter or script .

I would take your son to the Dr and find out what kind of Acne your dealing with because I would say that if its
going to be heavy acne NOTHING over the counter will work, and even stuff the Dr gives you might not
so you have to try different things....... of course if you have a good insurance plan then it wont be so hard to try
alot of creams ,, yes some of them make your face dry and red but the Dr should tell you the worst
side effects in the office so you are aware of them.

Okay, let's see if I got this right:
Differin, but it is a prescription
Proactiv
Cleocin and a Retin-A cream, both by rx
Neutrogena system
Clearsil
Benzoyl Peroxide or Oxy daily wash
Avon products
3 step stystem by Clinique
Yogurt
Bactrium and a cream called differen

I think I am more confused after reading the posts . . . I guess nothing works for everyone . . .

The salon I work in offers the Murad line of men's facials and acne facials. The basic steps are:

1. Cleanse the skin, hairline, and neck. ~ At home I use ordinary Dove soap. I know it's not for your face, but it neutralizes. And if I'm extra broken out I lather up my face rag with Dove and add a little Arm & Hammer. It acts as a mild face scrub.

2. Treat Spots. ~ I use Clean & Clear Moisturizing Acne Treatment. It's very important to treat the spots with something that will moisturize. That way the spots will not dry out and look dry and gross even when you don't have pimples.

3. Moisturize. ~ Clogged pores are a big problem with acne. Pores become clogged when your skin is dry and your skin wants to be moisturized...so your skin produces oils that cover the skin and block pores. To prevent this, get a good thin lotion and apply a small amount to your face.

If the acne is really bad, you should do this 2-3 times a day. I usually wash my face this way first thing in the morning and right before I go to sleep. I get compliments on my skin all of the time! The only time I break out anymore is during my cycle (that's when I add the Arm & Hammer).

I hope you find something that works!

My son is 12 and has started to have acne. Poor thing. It takes persistence but we have gotten him all cleared up with low-cost, over-the-counter products.

Benzoyl Peroxide has been mentioned above... The dermatologist told my nephews that it is the active ingredient that works best.

It is in one type of Stridex acne cleansing pads WITH Benzoyl Peroxide... It has a very low percentage and is not drying.

For the big ones, we have a bottle of Benzoyl Peroxide Cream that I found for $2 at K-Mart. It has 10% BP.

Hope that helps...
