Unhappy ISO information on dental problem in son...

My poor son, who is now 20, has a problem with the acid in his mouth. I just took him for his checkup, and he has ten new little cavities!! I feel so badly for him. Our dentist and hygenist (whom I like and trust) have been treating him for many years. My understanding is that his saliva is too acidic, causing constant decay no matter what he does.

He is using special toothpaste and mouthwash, brushing and flossing. The only little thing we know can help is xylitol, an additive in some gums and mouthwashes, so he chews the gum after he eats if he can't brush.

I did some research when this was first diagnosed, and am trying to find any new information/treatment but cannot seem to locate anything online at all. I wondered if anybody had any similar experiences, any suggestions for treatments. Wondering if it might help to see an endocrinologist??? I am clutching at straws here, but I cannot imagine what will happen to his mouth if we don't find some help.

I have no help but I can slightly relate. I have acidic saliva too and no matter how well I brush and floss I always get new cavities I also use a prescription toothpaste and must use a flouride rinse 2 times a day.

Would sealants offer any relief to this problem? I guess the acid would eventually eat at them but maybe it would give him a little more protection.

I hope that you are able to find some help for him.

I am a dental asst. and was going to reccomend the xylitol. We also have a paste called MI paste that you can only get through dentists. We have people that have a higher decay rate use a prescription toothpaste in the morning (Prevident is what we have) then use this MI Paste at night before bedtime. Check with your dentist and see if they can get it for you. Also, have him keep away from pop ~ diet or regular is very high in acid.

I'll ask about the MI paste--I don't remember hearing about it before.

Thank you all for your help. I am going to keep searching and see if I can find a study or something with some promise!
