Are all neat freaks psychopaths?

Just about everyone I know that has a super neat house is a nut case or is married to one. What about you? I'm talking about people with kids, before kids my house was always tidy.

I might just be trying to avoid some housekeeping by posting this! Or maybe I am just trying to make myself feel better about my house being messy and cluttered!

Yikes. I have a somewhat organized and clean house but I don't think I'm a nut case.

It does get dirty but I just follow a quick, simple routine. I do a Flylady type of thing, and you'd be surprised what you can get done in 5 - 15 minutes per room.

Then for bigger things like odd basement clutter, I just get the family and dig in and get rid of stuff!!

I don't go for perfection. I just go for basic quick cleaning, make the family pitch in, and things seem to fall into place.

I don't think they are ALL nut cases, but, several I have met ARE, for sure. This one lady I knew....OMG, total whack job, and so was her DH. Another lady I know, very nice, and very organized and neat. Come to think of it, I know several that are that way, and are not nuts.

I'm neat and organized, but, not too terribly anal about it, and I don't think I'm nuts. Don't think many other people think I am, either.

I'm too busy for FlyLady, too. Who has time to check that web site??

I'm a major neat freak. Everything in my house is organized, top to bottom, inside and out. Things are sorted into containters and labeled and stacked alphabetically or with like items. My house is always clean. There may be toys spread around but give me 5 minutes and they can all be put away into their designated labeled containers. Clutter and messes stress me out so I can tend to be a nutjob if my house is disorganized or dirty. I like to pick up things and put them away in their place the second I finish using it. I didn't always used to be this way, in fact before I had children I was rather messy and I would spend my entire Saturdays cleaning up the mess made during the week. Having children has helped me manage my time much more wisely and I have become a more organized person and way less stressed! I never knew why I always felt stressed until I got into the routine I'm in right now, and with 3 children ages almost 4, 2-1/2, and 17 months and 8 months pregnant with my 4th child and I am much less stressed now and have a cleaner, more organized house, than I did before I had children. My husband calls me anal. Go figure!

I only really know one super neat freak & the only thing she is psychotic about is her cleaning!!! She is a relative of mine who would freak if she came in my house she goes so far as too I have all of her wedding pics I dont even really speak to her but because she wont allow pictures in her house. She will not leave her house (honestly she only leaves to buy more cleaners) because she is too busy cleaning she actually drove someone in her own family to go over the edge she is the only neat freak I know & yes shes crazy!!!

I use to be a neat freak..No nut case here ....but I did have a neighbor that went bonkers when she found dust on my shelf. The lady started jumping up and down shouting I found dust! It's amazing when you know someone who is so neat you will try to find something out of place or dirty

This is almost too funny !!! I do not consider myself a neat freak by any means, but clutter does bother me. One day I had just dusted and my husbands friend came over. I kid you not, I actually saw him do the white glove test (only no white glove present ). I don't think he realized I had seen him do it, but the shock on my face was probably picture perfect , lol. I came very close to asking if everything was to his satisfaction, lol, but refrained. I just want to add though, this guy was as nice as anyone and he never would have done this to be mean about it.

No, all neat freaks are not psychopaths or nut cases.
Just like I'm sure messy people who live in cluttered homes are not all pathological hoarders.

Maybe no psychopath but definitely missing out on life!! I have a friend who is a neat freak. She labels everything in her refrigerator, labels and alphabetizes everything in her cabinets, has containers for everything. There is no picture hanging unless it is necessary. Her basement/garage is so organized and clean you could eat off the floor. She goes behind her kids picking up their toys. She is constantly wiping off a table or counter when you're visiting. When her son had his first birthday and we let him dig in his birthday cake, I thought she was going to have a heart attack!! As soon as a piece of cake hit the floor or his highchair, she scooped it up. She vacuums at least twice a day. And no matter who it is, your shoes have to be taken off at the door. Right now she's suffering from back and neck problems and her doctor has told her she has to change her lifestyle. So do you think she will do it? I doubt it because she probably can't.

She is also recovering from an eating disorder. She may not be a psychopath , but I would definitely call her a perfectionist in every sense of the word.

I read an interesting article recently about women who underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost a ton of weight. The ones they featured, however, transferred their food addiction to something else like shopaholic, gambling, drinking, etc. Very interesting article about addictions.

I always say that everyone has a different level of clean. My dh level in mucher lower than mine, all you need to do is look in his closet or garage. I do not clean either of these places they are his and that is what doors are for. I like things neat and clean, it does stress me out to have clutter around me. I think having children made me accept some clutter but I still cannot stand handprints on my slidding glass doors or my car windows!

I would rather see a neat freak instead of a bunch of slobs! I really don't consider it to be psychopathic but maybe just caring about thier home and environment.

I don't mean if a crumb falls on the floor I think someone should have to run to pick it up or if a pop can is sitting on the counter it doesn't have to be thrown away right then. Although I do get upset when I just get done cleaning and the clutter monkies all come in to search and destroy it all!!!

I guess you can be too extreme in either direction.

They are usually anal and control freaks trying to keep every single detail of their lives and their environments in complete order so as not to allow any room for confusion or anything out of the ordinary. Usually they grew up either with someone like this or they had no control over their lives so they are making up for it now.

I hope you aren't saying that about all neat freaks! I did not grow up this way, in fact I grew up in a household where my mother, while extremely loving, was not the best housekeeper. I never had anyone over because the house was always a mess. I don't want my kids to grow up embarrassed to have their friends over. I also do not have control issues. I find life to be much easier and my house easier to keep clean when I clean for a half an hour a day rather than spending an entire day every week cleaning.

No I did not mean all at all! I just meant usually the people who are so freaking anal about it usually have some sort of control issues. But by no means does that apply to everyone. I am considered to be a neat freak by a lot of people because I don't like things laying around but I would be considered messy and possibly even dirty by true neat freaks.
Sorry I did not mean to imply that I was lumping everyone into one basket.

I like my house clean and not alot of clutter. I have always been like this. It was hard sharing a room for 19 years with a sister who wasn`t. Getting older I don~t care as much because I don~t have that many peaple in my house since my kids are older and not at home. The only thing that bothers me is when freind and family members worry what there house looks like when I visit. they always make an excuse for what there house looks like to me. I don`t care what anyone elses house looks like ,just mine . I truley believe that. I don`t judge people by the way they keep house. 2 things that I do do that drives people crazy is to always dry out my kitchen sink after I turn off the water and wash the dish detergent bottle off. I`m normal I think.

Yikes! If you are one that is doing this please stop! It is a small way you can help the planet. If your community does not have recyclying and you are interested please contact me. I am a Master Recycler and I am lucky enough to live in a community where you can recycle everything from plastic clamshells to athletic shoes to corks to ...well you name it. We compost everything around here too: all food except meat and bones and paper plates, napkins, paper towels, junk mail, most paper can be composted.
I was amazed to find the way the "dump" looks. And we do not know since most of our throw away garbage is relatively new substances to the planet if when they decompose in the future they will pollute the air our descendants breathe. Our "dump" even uses methane to generate electricity.

Sorry to get off topic but throwing away a pop can AAARRGGGH! If you knew what went into making one from scratch you would never buy one again.

Off topic, but, I don't recycle except for aluminum cans. They dont' have a community program here. Pathetic, isn't it????

Ok, now, I have a friend who is anal about being organized, and neat, and she is WONDERFUL at it. Doesn't take a lot of time, she just is "born organized" I guess. She does not recycle, and they do have a program where she lives. Can't stand the stuff laying around I guess??? I honestly don't know.

*grin*

My house is neat... The front room and bathroom are kept company-ready -- neat but not necessarily spotless -- homey and comfy. The rest of the house has doors that close easily.

I did not mean to single you out or anything. Please I am begging you for the sake of our children, grandchildren and theirs to consider when throwing something away whether there is somewhere else you can put it. Picture things this way: think of all the disposable lighters, razors, pop cans, etc only the amount you have used in your life then picture that mountain of pop cans or whaever.

This is for everyone: think of the Earth of our home (because it is!!!) would you throw a big pile in the corner of your house if there was something else or somewhere else you could put it?

I guess I am a "freak" when it comes to waste and trash.

Interesting question! I am a total slob and in comparison, I would consider DH a neat freak. But in reality he is probably somewhere in the middle of the scale. I did have one friend at work, however, who was a total neat freak - his house looked like a showcase. Everything clean, neat, lined up in neat rows on shelves, drawers, etc. I just thought he was a superneat person until he had a mental breakdown. Turns out he had some major mental problems (OCD, etc.) and was never able to return to work after that. It was very sad, such a nice guy.

I am a total neat freak, I wouldn't say I am a nut case but my BF might LOL I was at his place this weekend (I posted about that on the around my house board) and he decided to give his dog a half of a hamburger, he just threw it on the floor, of course the dog ate it but after the dog was done i kept asking my BF if he was going to wash the floor before bugs came and he said NO the dog got it all, finally after hearing me complain long enough he got up and washed the floor. I will admit sometimes I clean a little too much but that is just how i am

I couldn't agree with you more. What kind of planet are we leaving for our children, grandchildren and future generations. I just don't understand how people just don't get it already. What is it going to take? It's time to take action before it's too late. Remember the 3 r's. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
