That's wonderful!! I am so happy for you and your son. He couldn't fake that, not at that age. Those prayers were answered in the end that's all that matters now. Will he have to go for more tests in the future anyway?

I'm really really happy....BUT I'm still kinda not sure WHY such a huge change in just one month...I WAS THERE in the room when they did the tests both times, so I saw that things went way differently this time and DS did so much better.... Both the audiologist and the ENT doctor were like "huh?" and thats why we were there sooooo long.... AS of now, the ENT doctor says unless I notice a problem we dont need to come back since the tests all show he hears perfectly now...... I still think there is some weird school and doctor office conspiracy to make extra money by failing kids when they take hearing tests..... |

Don't give the school test a whole lot of faith. The vision and hearing screenings at our school are done by volunteers, insert overworked underappreciated PTA volunteers and you got it, and the training is pitiful at best. After being involved in our school's PTA and knowing how the testing and training is done, I no longer let my daughter do the screenings at her school.

WOW, I am glad to hear your sons hearing is back to 100% but as I was reading your post I was thinking dejavu!. My daughter failed 2 tests in school this year so we were referred to our pediatrician where she failed again(left ear as well) so they sent us to the audiologist. She failed that test also with significant hearing loss in her left ear due to nerve damage. The ENT Dr. has no idea how this could have happened. He said they give babies hearing tests when they are born but I don't remember if she had one or not. Anyway, she passed all of her tests last year in PreK so it would seem it happened in the past year. We did however notice her cranking up the volume on the phone(she is left handed so she uses her left ear). They are going to test her again in August before school starts again. The weird part , they didn't recommend hearing aids or surgery. He just wants to monitor her every 6 months. He did say if she needs to she can get an FM device(?) to help in school. This is where I get confused. When I talked to school they said IF she qualifies(based on grades and the audiologist report) they can get her one but she would have to be classified special ed. Now alot of people I tell this to make a face when I say special ed, WHY? Does anybody know how being labeled special ed affects the child? Other than the teacher who would really know? ANy input on this would be greatly appreciated. Jodi

That is great! I would however have him tested again in the summer just to be on the safe side. jodialcala I think in your daughter's case she would not be labled "special ed" but with special services instead. Anytime a child receives any extra accomodating services it is considered "special". I know in our schools for children that have a hearing issues the class that they are in is wired so that the teacher can wear a head set microphone. Most times the kids don't ever know that someone has a hearing problem because a lot of teachers really like to use the microphone to avoid having to talk loud.

I agree that the school tests are basically worthless. I hate to say that--especially as a teacher--but I've seen this happen WAY too many times. My son failed his twice, too, and we were frantic since I have a severe loss and it runs in my family. When I took him to the doctor, everything was fine. I know that the doctors and the schools are not "in cahoots" to make money; it's just that the school equipment is inadequate and most of the people giving the tests aren't really trained to do so. I know that the schools mean well...and there are probably cases where they catch something...but don't put a lot of stock in them. So glad this worked out well for your son, and I'm sorry that you had that scare.

He failed his school exam AND I took him to an Audiologist and ENT last month...HE failed not just the schools hearing tests, but the first round of tests that the Audiologist gave also....(I dont put much faith in the school given tests either) I'm not too sure how the audiologist tests from last month and this month differ so much!! |

Maybe he had water in his ear (swimmer's ear), wax buildup, or a slight ear infection last month during the first rounds of tests? I've had difficulty hearing out of one or both of my ears at various times and sometimes it is as simple as needing to pop my ear -- aggravating and sometimes painful. I have always heard not to clean the ears with q-tips so we do the ear drops and ear bulb for cleaning periodically. Finger with damp wash cloth works for the outer ear. I'm sure that you already know all of this. Just offering it in case it will remind you of something that the doctor might have missed. Last edited by Cuthie; 06-05-2007 at 03:42 PM. |

| In Illinois, you have to be certified by the state. Your equipment has to be checked yearly. Those machines are not cheap. The average audiometer is about $1,200.00. Volunteers are not able to do the tests. Like Cuthie said, he could have had water or ear wax in his ears and it worked it's way out. That is why a 2 week wait in between tests are reccommended. Also if at school the headphones are not on the ears properly, it is very hard to hear the tones. If the room is noisy, a fan on can make it impossible to screen. For the doctor to screen him and find the same results, maybe it was the power of prayer. I am glad you took the time and spent the money to check him out. I have a lot of parents that can't be bothered. I do hearing and vision in our school district and you would be surprised at how many do nothing. In our district, I made 335 referrals for a glasses exam, some had referral papers from 1st grade onthru 7th grade, with just less than 150 getting glasses. Less than 50%. Only 2 did not need glasses, per the doctor. I would love to get them all glasses, but that is not possible.
