When did this happen????

I don't buy a lot of fruit, since we don't eat a lot of fruit, and it usually goes bad before we eat it, so this kind of caught me off guard.....I got DD an apple, AN apple...$1.07!!!! They were $2.49 or $2.99 a pound. I can swear the last time I got apples they were like .59 a pound. Has it really been THAT long?? or have I just been asleep?? I looked at the other produce in the area, and almost fell on the floor!!!! Then I headed to the milk section!!!! It's almost cheaper for me to buy a COW!!!!

YIKES!!!!

I know what you mean! I can't believe how much milk has increased in just the last week. I told my husband just the other day that I just don't see how people with children are going to be able to buy groceries with the prices going up and up.

We planted a garden with my sister this year, so I'm looking so forward to the fresh veggies and canning a lot of them for wintertime, too. We even planted watermelon and canteloupes. We're already getting fresh sweet peas and the tomatoes are already green on the vine.

Produce has been really high this year. Usually prices are low in the summertime but not this year. Luckily, we have good sales so we just get whatever is on sale each week and that is the *fruit of the week*.

it's been like that for about the last year or so...at your grocery stores.

Randazzo's is by far the largest fruit/veggie stand in SE Michigan and even in his markets, apples/oranges/fruit are $2.00 upwards a pound (when you can get them by the pound)... sad huh?

I paid 75 cents for one lemon the other day. There's been a lot of storm damage in Florida that damaged fruit crops. Then again everything that comes to market comes by truck and you know what the price of gas is doing.

This is why I asked for a lemon tree for Mother's Day

The price of grapes is out of sight also. We love grapes in the summertime. Put them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Oh, yummm....... I also don't like the grapes being prebagged. I like choosing my own and sometimes I still do when I don't want 3 lbs. at a time.

Speaking of milk and fruit.. we went to Wal Mart the other day and milk was 4+ dollars a gallon.. and I'm not talking Borden milk either. It's the plain old Great Value milk. I told dh that we're going to have to find something else for middle of the day drinking. Milk at that price is unreasonable.

We pay outrageous prices for everything here in Alaska. Cherries usually run about $7.99 lb. Bananas are a constant .89 - $1.19 per lb. Apples are over $2.59 lb, nectarines/peaches/plums are about $3.69 lb, grapes are normally $3.99 + per lb. Kiwi, don't even get me started on these....majority of the time they are .89cents each! On the 'rare' occasion they are 2 or 3 for $1.00....we buy and buy and buy and eat and eat and eat until we are sick of them. LOL!

We do have 'good' sales every so often and when we do, that is when we gorge on fresh fruit while it's in. Everything has to be either barged or flown in so we pay extremely high prices on everything.

Don't expect milk prices to come down. I saw on the news were farmers are growing a lot of corn for ethenal (sp?) production. So feed prices for cattle is going way up. They said something like milk prices going up as fast as gas prices. I guess we just can't win. Maybe we should all buy stock in corn. LOL

I can`t believe the price of corn on the cob. That used to be the cheapest thing in the summer. I`d say 12 for 1 dollar now I just saw it 4 for 1.99. WOW Cherrys are my favorite fruit and I wait for the summer to have them. Not anymore. Watched a program the other night about the wt on products getting smaller and the prices bigger. They are trying to fool everyone with that one.

Yep, I paid $3.69 a pound for cherries today (didn't buy a whole pound though), grapes were on sale for $1.48 a pound, peaches on sale for $1.38 a pound, I paid a $1.08 for 1 onion, ONE onion, $1.79 for 1 lb of carrots and these were SALE prices (except for the cherries). I can't wait for my fruit trees to ripen, I have an apple tree and 2 peach trees, I think it will be about another 2-3 weeks though until they are ripe. I am also going to go ahead and buy a cherry tree, a plum tree and some grape vines to plant this year for future use in years to come, because I can't imagine that fruit is going to get cheaper over the years. Next year we may have to grow out own veggies if the prices keep getting so high.

I can't even walk around the store anymore, I spend half of my grocery buget before I get out of the produce and dairy sections!

It's crazy, but it's things we need to buy and we drink about 4 gallons of milk a week!

It would be cheaper for me to buy soda and chips for the kids to live on!

When gas prices go up, so does everything else. They have been saying this was coming.
Plus with all the droughts, flooding and whatever else the crazy weather has been doing, hasn't been helping.
Get ready for a simple thing called honey to go up majorly too (if it hasn't already). I read a while back that honeybees are dying like crazy by some disease or something...don't remember exactly. And what will go up besides honey? Cereal, certain crackers, etc.
It's so crazy!
I haven't been using coupons as much as I used to, but you bet your bippy I'm using them like crazy again!
With everything going up, I'm not getting paid more, but the cost of living is friggin rediculous. i'm a single mom and really struggling now.
I don't think it's going to get any better any time soon.

I think a lot of it has to do with the rising cost of fuel.

Don't forget that California and other places also got hit with that cold-snap around Easter....I remember when we had snow on the ground here in Texas they were already talking about how high prices would be this summer for produce...and they are really high

milk, fruit and veggies will bankrupt me faster then gas right now

Well the produce wasn't as bad as I expected today:

strawberries- .99 a pint
lettuce $1.49 a head
apples- $3.99 for a 3 lb bag
cantaloupe- $1.50
mango .49 each
bananas .69 a lb.
corn on the cob 4/$1.99

Then I had to fill the truck with gas and spent $70!

I went to Walmart today and they had bananas for .38 a pound, normally they are .48 so I got a bunch of those, corn on the cob was .38 an ear which is not bad, and the cherries, still over $3 + a pound (I still bought a few), even at Walmart. I also ended up paying 1.92 for a half gallon of milk. The margarine has gone up I used to pay .50 for a box of 4 sticks of Blue Bonnet or Imperial, now it's .58 a box. Dasani water was down, normally it is 4.98 a case today it was 4.50. I am wondering if people will start to only buy the essentials, and if that happens whether the price of other items will lower so they can move them off their shelves?

I keep my bananas in the refrierator. They still turn brown, but, don't get mushy and YUK like they do if you keep them out. I have kept them for 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

nobody will eat them if they turn brown here... ugh!

so I cut them up, squeeze a few drops of lemon over them, and toss them into bags for the freezer.

One thing here in Az. the Fruits and vegetable are very cheap,Have you try your local farmer market like sprout farmer market, and Sunflower farmer market...We had a Henry's Farmer market,it was the best with cheap prices...

Bing Cherry $1.99 lbs
melon 3 for $1.00
Banana 3lb for $1.00

I use the green bags from QVC to keep them fresher longer they're worth the price.

We don't buy milk or deli meats and cheeses at the grocery store - too expensive. Our local White Hen Pantry has the best prices on those items...sometimes their price for bananas is much better than the supermarket too. WHP is right on the way to other places we need to go, so it is really not a special trip or anything where the gas would consume the savings. So...maybe try your local convenience store.

We pay about $2 for a pound of organic apples here and organic pears are usually 10 lbs for $10 on sale. We don't buy a lot of produce other than that and salad which is BOGO for bags all the time. Strawberries were BOGO or $5 for a big box with 2 huge containers on them. I get our milk from a local dairy so it's like $2.50 for a half gallon and that's fine with me.

I do think it's funny that people will complain about $4 a gallon milk but will spend $4.50 on a latte at Starbucks LOL
