I don't know about the leaf lettuce, but it's done a lot w/ Poke leaves. My granny loved her some Poke Salad!

Cook a little bacon, leave the grease in the pan, dump in a whole bunch of Poke leaves and put a lid on it and take it off the heat. It wilts the leaves...I personally don't like it, but hey, a lot of people I know do (I was born and raised in Arkansas)

I grew up in the south, my great grandmother was from the hills in Kentucky as she called it and I have never heard of it.

We did eat polk though with ham or bacon.

Yes Ma'am

I do believe it is a southern thang.

I am a southerner, born and raised...through and through!

My friend that lives up North has never heard of many of the things I eat, so I can honestly say it's a Southern Thang!

My family is originally from Williamson West Virginia, so I've heard of this. I've heard it called wilted lettuce, or killed lettuce. My mom made it when I was a kid. For all y'all who are gagging at the thought, don't knock it til you've tried it. It actually tastes good. It's not like it's swimming in grease... it's no different really than adding oil to a salad.

Never heard of it but it sounds good to me... I was not raised in the South but I was raised by a mother who got the 4 food groups into us in some very creative and not always appetizing ways! I like anything vinegary and love cooked spinach. Maybe it is similar?

I have spent 42 of my 46 years in Tennessee, and never heard of this "dish". Sounds nasty to me, but to each his/her own.

Just a guess--but most of the people I know that have eaten this are from extremely rural areas and were more likely than not very poor. So, maybe it's a "Southern" poor thang....

Poke greens grow wild as do other greens that are cooked/served this way--thus a person could gather them for free.

Grew up in Arkansas no dish like your talking about, poke salad EWWWWW. Sundrop is kinda like ummm mtn dew? not really sweet and made with fruit juices

Sun Drop is a citrus-flavored soda produced by Cadbury-Schweppes. Like other citrus sodas, it has a yellowish-green color imparted by Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. It has a sharper taste than Pepsi's Mountain Dew or Coca-Cola's Mello Yello, and is known for its high caffeine (63mg per 12oz can) and sugar content. Orange juice is an ingredient to the drink, and remaining pulp matter from the orange juice provide some of the soft drink's unique taste and appearance. A diet variety was introduced in 1985.

I tried boiled peanuts awhile back cause a friend was going on about them, ICk tasted like black eyed peas or something like that

And now by monday morning this southern girl will be transplanted up north hehehe

My parents are from Sissonsville and East Lynn WVA. I do know of this dish and I think the other poster who said it may be a "Southern Po Thing" is right on the money! It actually sounds pretty good...I'll have to see if my grandma still makes it!

That may be so in some cases but not mine. My dad was the manager of a huge trucking company. We grew a lettuce bed each yr just for this. Its really good.

It sounds similar to a wilted spinach salad my mom used to make. It had raw spinach, hard boiled eggs, bacon and sauteed onions in it. The onions were cooked in the bacon fat and the bacon fat was also used as the oil in the dressing. You pour the hot dressing over the spinach, onions, bacon and eggs and it wilted it. I didn't like it much as a kid but I think it was a more "grown up" dish and an acquired taste.

It's wonderful!

Sounds disgusting, and I think I might like it. I tend to put greens (like the bagged salad mixes) in grilled cheese sandwiches, and seriously, it's good.

Oh there is a huge difference!

Collard greens are usually "stewed" or boiled. Good Collard/Turnip/Mustard greens are cooked down and usually with bacon or fat back. And then you have the Pot Liqueur in the bottom of your greens pan.

What they are talking about is "wilting" the greens by applying a hot liquid (usually bacon grease). You can not do that with collard/turnip/mustard greens are they are usually too tough and sometimes bitter.

Leaf lettuce and poke leaves are tender and succulent and can be "cooked" by wilting.

Love wilted lettuce, which is what Mama called it, but some still call it scalded lettuce...she did not use the boiled eggs though, and added some sugar....I love this stuff....We are in Va. but not sure where she learned to make it, though I imagine was a family dish, and our people come out of W.Va. Red Eye Gravy is good too..
Now I want some

I grew up in Michigan and my parents grew up in Toledo, and we had wilted lettuce may times every summer. (without the eggs) My mom also made dandelion greens the same way. My maternal Grandmother was from a farming family in Van Wert Ohio and my maternal grandfather from southern Ohio. Maybe that's where it originated in my family.

It is wonderfull. Can't wait for my lettuce to grow to make some.

I was born and raised in Michigan (live in Georgia now) and so was my mom and my grandmother. My mom makes 'wilted lettuce' which sounds similar. It's fresh leaf lettuce from the garden, topped with crumbled bacon and onion and topped with a mixture of bacon grease, vineagar and sugar.

It's very tasty and I really liked it, even as a child. So, in my house it wasn't a Southern 'thang'.

It really isn't cooked, it is just "tossed " with the hot dressing.

We are from Indiana and my mom and grandma called it wilted lettuce.
My dad is from PA and it is called Hot lettuce there.

Neither one used boiled eggs in theirs.
I have never made it or eaten it .
It doesn't look good to me. Maybe it tastes better than it looks.

I live in AR (since around jr high age but my family is from WI, Chicago area) and have never heard of this. There is a a restaurant that has "soaked" salads.
I have heard of poke salad though but I don't think a lot of people eat that anymore.
We live in the city though and a lot of people won't even eat blackberries that are growing wild LOL

All sodas are called "cokes"

Sweet tea is tasty. I just started liking it a few yrs ago.
McDonalds sells a big cup of it for $1

In the rural area people hunt morels, ginseng, maypops, berries,nuts.. but mostly the hippies I think. Like my mom LOL. We used to do all that. Most rural people are pretty commercial oriented about things, besides hunting.

Sounds disgusting to me! I was born and raised in NJ, but I've been in Virgina for nearly 30 years now and have never heard of it. My father's family is all from around Knoxville, Tennessee and I never saw any of them make anything remotely like that.

Could you please post the recipe???

That's how my gma used to make it. I love this stuff but I dont have the recipe. I'm from KY and my gma used to make all kinds of wonderful things that most people have no clue on what your talking about when you tell them.

I'm in Ohio now and there is a rest/bar down the street from work that has a chicken salad that they give you hot bacon dressing that is close to it to put on your salad. Makes me think of my gma every time I eat it.
