What's your sales tax?

I am from Chicago and use to paying high sales taxes

I have lived in Florida for 15 years and am very comfy paying 6.5%

Now that I will be traveling the country this summer, would like to know what everyone's paying!

Thanks

Sales tax in Tennessee is 9.25%. They changed the way they tax food and non food items are taxed at a lower rate, I believe that's right. Looking at a Walmart receipt it says Tax 1 1.0% and Tax 3, 8.25%. Of course the items taxed at a lower rate aren't many, LOL as I only paid .69 for the lower rate and $13.64 for the higher rate. Isn't that the way it goes?
But Tennessee doesn't have an income tax, which is why our sales tax is higher than most states.

It also varies from city to city within some states. I thought the sales tax rate in Florida was 7.5%??

SC has a seperated sales tax like the poster in TN mentioned. I forget the tax rate, but, it's high.

Our state tax rate is 5.6%.
County adds .7% to support roads and jails
Then our city adds another 1.8% sales tax.
Total is 8.1% retail sales tax.

Where I am , Santa Rosa County its 6.5% and Duval county (where i use to live is 7%) my neighboring county is 7.5 % Which is Escambia. My BF who lives in ALABAMA suffers from 9% sales tax!!!

I seem to recall places in ARIZONA were 11% and that's what I am really looking for...
red flags on sales taxes...like perhaps, in NYC I might prefer to buy from a flea market/vendor than an outlet store.

Montana has no state sales tax. Where we are we have no local/county sales tax. I don't think there are many (if any) major cities that do have sales tax here.

Hmmm never heard of 11%

Highest in Arizona would be Carefree, Gila Bend and Guadalupe at a total of 9.3% retail sales tax (base sales + county + city sales tax). But, to my knowledge, those cities arent exactly what I would describe as shopping meccas.

Cheapest places to shop in AZ would be Chandler and Gilbert.

Here in NC it's 7.5%, but we vacation in Myrtle Beach, and it's something like 13%!

6% sales tax in Michigan, except on FOOD at a grocery store.

However, tack on an additional 5.5% sales tax if you are going to rent a car, stay in a hotel or buy tickets to shows and events.

The state of FL is 6% and our county has an additional 1%, so 7% total. I can drive about 15 minutes into the next county and there rate is 6.5%.

Ours is 8.9% even though our state is listed pretty low, the county and city can add on extra taxes, and that is 8.9% on EVERYTHING including food.

We don't have a State tax here in Alaska, but we do have a local city tax. It's 6% in the summer time when the tourists arrive, but in the winter we get a big discount and only pay 5%. WoooHooo!

My husband is from New Hampshire, and I remember the first time he took me there. I bought a pair of jeans that were $19.99, and it blew my mind to give the guy a $20 bill, and have him give me a penny back! LOL

Until OP asked, I never really thought about it either. It's definitely a good idea to pay attention to taxes, how much stores and businesses are charging, and the calculations for different areas, that's for sure.

It is very important to pay attention to sales tax if you are buying high ticket items (ie appliances, automobiles).

We bought our car here in Arizona. Sales tax was outrageous. It would have been worth it to go to New Mexico! or another bordering state. But, due to convenience, we paid the tax. Sales tax on our new car cost more than our trade-in brought in.

Luckily, Amazon does not charge sales tax for Arizona! With Amazon Prime, we often get a better deal and get it in 2 days. Online shopping is great.

Here in North Texas - it's 8.25%!!! Of course that doesn't come anywhere near the High Freaking Property Taxes here - they just seem to go higher every year as well as the appriasals!! Our home has gone up over 25% in the last 5 years now - which would be a good thing if we were looking to sell but when you aren't - they stick you in the gut!!!!

Not sure how far you are traveling but here in Northern California our sales tax is 8.75%. We are near San Francisco, Alameda County.
I always enjoyed traveling through Oregon, 0% sales tax.

Have you heard of google street view (at google maps)? There are a few cities on there now and it is pretty cool. You can reallly check out the areas you are going to visit, and get a heads up that some arent so great. People here are all upset because its so clear, but its all public so they cant really complain. I think it helps travelers see what the real deal is in certain places.

Have a fun trip! (ps. Dont read the whole way, my husbands biggest complaint with our trips is i read and miss stuff, enjoy the view..)

No sales tax on clothing in Pennyslvania!!!!

Unfortunately I no longer live there, but sometimes have my big ticket online purchases sent to my parents address to avoid my state's tax.
