My understanding is that children can and do get them after the vaccine, but that they tend to get lighter cases. I had them as a teenager and broke out 14 days after exposure. One of my children got them at nine months, three weeks to the day after exposure. That child got shingles at age five and my then-three-year-old got chickenpox from those shingles. That child, in turn, gave them to my then-4-month-old. He had the worst case of all. None of mine got the vaccine. My 2nd child is the only one who could have, anyway. |

I caught chicken pox from my 9 year old cousin at his mom's wedding. He'd already had them and gotten over them but yet I managed to get them. I was 22 at the time. It was the worst case of chicken pox any of my family had ever seen. My cousin that just got married called me a troll (sensitive huh?). If there is an adult who's never had them that was exposed to this toddler, I worry about the adult. I think kids get over it faster and adults get it worse.

I did not know that they were recommending a second dose of the vaccine till I went investigating on the internet last night. I figured I'd call the ped. doctor this morning and see if they have any ideas of what I can do. Everyone in my household, with exception of my DD because she got the vaccine, has had the chickenpox......so I am hoping that it's in our favor! It's just I'm worried about my DD, more so my niece, getting them. She's so young! I'm trying to stay positive but I know how contagious this can be!

Two of my four kids got the chicken pox after being immunized. It was last May/June. My then six year old daughter got them first...not a mild case, but not a horrific case either. She was covered with spots, but was only mildly uncomfortable. I would imagine she would have had a really bad case if she had not had the shot. She also came down with pnuemonia at the same time. She was one sick puppy between the two. My then seven year old daughter got them about ten days later. She did have a very mild case. Only about ten spots. Not uncomfortable at all. My other two kids didn't get them and neither did the infant I was babysitting for. His MD advised his mom to keep him home while my daughter had them which she did. She couldn't do it again when my second daughter got them so I was just very diligent about keeping them apart, keeping hands washed etc. He didn't get them and has since been immunized. There is a booster recommended now. My two kids who didn't get the pox have since gotten the booster. |

Well...so far this toddler has a total of 6 on her with the first one being noticed on Monday. Her mom took her to the doctor and the doctor told her they look "chickenpox-ish" and that she's not contagious although she shouldn't let her be around other children. Doctor also told her that we should keep an eye on the baby for 2wks to see if she gets them or not. Her mom told me that the first one she got has already started to clear up. ****Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with me. It makes me feel a little better knowing that should my daughter get them they more than likely will be a mild case and hopefully will be cleared up before we go on vacation. My niece on the other hand....my sister was saying....well, if she get them, she get them...we'll be done and over with it and she won't have to get the shot.

This was exactly our thought as well. Needless to say the doctor was of no help at all. I am going to tell her that as long as she has spots (hers aren't blistering and scabbing over) then I cannot watch her and potentially expose my niece again.

When I had them (twice! once at 12, again at 15) that you can't be back at school until everyone of them were scabbed over. My dd has had the shot, so far hasn't gotten them. She's getting her second shot after school is out. Ds hasn't had the shot yet so far so good.

That's been my understading! I'm not taking any chances. Here is what I found on the internet.... Contagiousness Chickenpox is contagious from about 2 days before the rash appears and lasts until all the blisters are crusted over. A child with chickenpox should be kept out of school until all blisters have dried, usually about 1 week. If you're unsure about whether your child is ready to return to school, ask your doctor. HTH someone! I am just guessing here but maybe the doctor was unsure of her being contagious or not because they weren't turning into blisters Not quite sure!

But, I'm guessing she's confused. Generally, if a child has Chickenpox they have other sx.: runny nose, low to moderate fever, etc. I'm betting the child doesn't have chickenpox. But that's just my opinion. I am not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be one on message boards. |

She did run a fever on Thursday or Friday and was generally not feeling well....was achy, not eating well....and then the first mark showed. Which we both thought it was a bug bite until others showed up. Only time will possibly tell.....if my niece comes down with it then we'll know for sure. It sure would be nice if it wasn't chickenpox though.

OK....I'm so confused with your statement. You got the shot when you were a baby (but the shot was not introduced into the US until 1995, 1988 in Japan according to some other posters), but you're obviously older than 20 (by how much I don't know). So, how did you manage to get the Chickenpox vaccine when you were a baby?????? Chickenpox vaccine initially was not mandatory. I know when my child was getting immunized we had the option on whether the shot was given or not.

In Georgia, the second Chicken Pox vaccine is mandatory for school now (entrance to headstart, kindergarten, middle or high school) unless you can prove an immunity. My boys have their well visits next week and I assume the Dr. will recommend the vaccine. I am one of those people who wanted their children to get chickenpox, instead of the vaccine, but I really didn't have a choice since my kids are school-aged. Sarah......mom to Jason & Devin |

If you are at minimum 20 years old, you were born in 1987 or before. I guess if you got it at the age of one in Japan, it's possible. It was not even available for human use anywhere in the world prior to that time, from what I understand. |
