Kids and Summer

I don't know where to put this so mods move if necessary.
Hopping we can start a sticky with free or cheap things to do in the summer with kids.
I some some reading programs posted.
Last year kids-r-us had a camp thing once a week but I can't find out anything for this year.
TIA

Do Free Movies count?

When school's out, kids around the country come to selected Regal Entertainment Group theatres for our Free Family Film Festival. It's a fun-filled nine weeks of movies for kids and their parents.

Since 1991, Regal Entertainment Group has provided this service to the community, and best of all it's FREE!

Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Kids can register on Scholastic.com/summerreading to keep a log of books they read. For every 4 books each child posts in their log, Scholastic will donate one book to a child in need.

I think this is a terrific program!

Off to checkout the Regal Cinemas site...though my d/s works at the competition!

In our area the church has a vacation bible school and it is only $5 a kid for the week! I am not a church goer, but we are welcomed there and there are a lot of people and kids we know. The kids have a BLAST, they do crafts, sing, eat, etc and it's not overly religious, just a really nice time for everyone.

We also go to a parks, or the Delaware River. The kids like to picnic, so we can make a day of it and invite another friend.

One week we go to my Mom's house and hit the beach in Maine, free there too!

Fun post, I can wait for ideas!

Try local churches for VBS -- around here they are 'free', but ask for a donation of either $ or items they need. Still -- it's a weeks worth of entertainment for the kids for very inexpensive.

Try the library for summer reading programs. Ours has story times for different age groups on different days, free movies and other activities.

Try your city or county's parks & recreation for free or inexpensive activiites.

Try your local mall. One by me offers a free two hour program one morning a week. It is for children, accompanied by an adult and they offer crafts, games, as well as freebies and coupons for the adults.

We have a pool in our neighborhood that we pay mandatory HOA dues to use. We've been there pretty much every day since school got out it is 'free' and it keeps my kids busy all afternoon. If you don't have a pool in your neighborhood, see if your community pool offers some kind of discounted pass.

Go to the park and let the kids run and play. Better yet, call a friend which children of similar ages and ask them to meet you there.

Free movies at Regal Cinema (and probably others, but Regal is near me).

Barnes & Noble and Build-A-Bear both have reading programs where your child can earn free stuff.
