Did he have someone in the car with him?? Thats usually the case. Teenagers seem to drive better when they are alone, I swear what is it about teenagers in a group setting that makes there brain deactivate?? My parents didn't let me get my permit until I was 17 1/2, just for that very reason. It worked cause I got my license on my 18th birthday and I have never had a ticket or an accident that was my fault. I was a straight A student and pretty responsible as well. But, that was the hard and fast rule at our house and I will continue it with my daughters. I would hurt him a little this time, as far as punishment goes, b/c this isn't just his life your dealing with. Seems like your handling it well though. My DH drags kids home to parents who don't give a rip!

First of all, yes, he knows better but I can tell you from experience it doesn't make a bit of difference because he knows better. Everything you've told him, showed him pictures of wrecks, lectured -- it all goes out the window once he's behind the wheel of that car. I've raised two sons, so I know what you're going thru. As far as the insurance goes, we had them pay their own insurance. If they were going to get a ticket, then they could pay the premiums on the insurance. One son never ever got a ticket -- the other one got several. If he went to court, HE paid the fines out of his own pocket. HE paid his insurance premiums from day one. Here in Virginia squealing tires is a reckless driving charge. I forgot to notice what state you're in. I would definitely take the keys away. I agree that having other kids in the car is sure thing he'll show off. Even if he's alone in the car and there's a car beside him or kids are hanging out in a parking lot, he'll show off just to get the attention. My husband used to be a driver education teacher and he's heard every story in the book. Even with him being a driver's ed teacher still didn't stop our one son from pushing the envelope. All I can say is please tell him to wear his seatbelt!!! |

We had a good talk with him.. 2 weeks no keys..The police officer was very nice to Dh ..He told Dh alot of parents gets attiude with him He could of given Ds a ticket for Reckless Driving $300 licence would of been supspend for 30 days another $200 to get his license back plus our insurance would went way up.. That alone scared Ds. Yes, he had someone in the car with him I'm sure there was alot of macho talk before even getting in the car...For now we got a new rule no one is allowed in the car with him. I just cringe at the thought of what could of happen..The officer told him If he wants to squeal his tires again to do it in empty parking lot. He promises he won't ever do it again..The officer really made him see the daylight!

Point of the story is....Squealing tires in Virginia is wreckless driving. and dependent upon the age of the driver, loss of license for a year and if there is any other infraction during that charge, it is a result of jail time too,....that's the way the judge explained the charge in court that day. So, perhaps you could point some of this out to your son while giving his punishment. ~just a thought.

If the car is in your name remind the "17 year old boy who knows better" that if he drives like an idiot and has an accident in the car then you are responsible for anyone else he might hurt. I don't think that kids understand that they are driving a ton plus lawsuit waiting to happen. Glad the police offider read him the riot act. Hopefully he listened and really learned his lesson. Next time the cops could be showing up at your door to take you to the hospital or worse...no mother wants that visit. |

I think we've all squeeled our tires once or twice, but as a mother I forbid any kind of act..lol I know not the time to joke.. but I 've done it before.. good luck with him..

Wow, that it harsh! I think here in NJ everyone drives like that, maybe that's why our car insurance is so high? I drove like an idiot when I was this age, I honestly don't know how I ever made it to 37. I am a good driver, but I did fool around too much. Hopefully the police scared him enough for now and I think the no other kids in the car rule is a great one. Kids tend to cave in to the peer pressure if there are others to impress.
