Computer Problems and Questions....ACK!!!

I am not very technically savvy-prefer not to be, in fact.

Our PC needs a new mother board.....we just replaced this in Oct. 2006. Anyway....they are saying we need ANOTHER one. Ok, now, HOW do these things go bad???? Does anyone have any knowledge on this??? Seems a bit odd for this part to go bad again, this quickly. Can a virus attack it???

Also, does anyone know of a good place to get replacement parts??? Good and reliable, that is. Dell wants $139 for a refurbished one.

Thanks.

Gosh I don't know. We have had our Dell Desktop for about fours and half years now and the only thing that we've had to do was upgrade the ram and add updated programs. It seem like you got a defective one to me. I am sure someone here will be able to tell you.

DH (comp tech) says: do a googel search and find one there, they are just as good as the refurbished ones. He also said that all sorts of stuff can kill a mother board, like a surge, static, or overheating. Good luck!

No, they will ship it to us. DH knows how to install it from the last time, thankfully. We're not sure we even want to go to the expense, since we just ordered a new Apple computer.....

this is so frustrating....I surely don't want to have to get a new mother board every nine months

Could the motherboard be getting dust on it?
Any problems with power supply?

We've had this computer for years - haven't had a problem with motherboard (knock on wood). We've experienced viruses too, and thankfully no effect on motherboard.

Where are you taking the computer? Can't they answer why this is happening? Have they ruled out other causes? Seems weird that you would have to replace it in less than a year.
I'd be annoyed about replacing it too.

What specific problems are you having? It's pretty rare for an otherwise healthy computer to have a motherboard go bad, and I'm not sure that $139 is worth it to fix a computer that wasn't new last year. Do bear in mind that replacing a motherboard that came with a premade computer can cause Windows XP to decide it wasn't installed right, so I'd avoid that route.

I do not know how they go bad - DH would know he built our computer - however we get a lot of our parts from newegg.com they are great on shipping and prices. We have never had a problem with them. Good luck!
