There was quite the lengthy discussion of this awhile back. Makes for some interesting reading. Gardasil Shot required for girls....

I got the shot. I don't have children, so can't comment there. DH suspects his ex of having slept around, and thought it would be a good idea. Gyn stated that the virus could stay dormant in men for years, so it seemed sensible. It's no quite the same as vaccinating a daughter, but it seemed worth adding.

Absolutely!! Just got the second round for my daughter who is 14. She'll be due for the third part in Oct. (already made the appointment). For my family, this was a no-brainer. I do not believe for one minute that it leads to girls behaving badly. Granted, some girls will become more sexually active earlier than others, but I don't believe for one minute it's because of some vaccine. I like the idea that medicine is making such important strides.

No. I'm too nervous of new vaccines, especially ones dealing with her reproductive parts. I'm not opposed to it, it's just too early. She's 13 and not interested in boys yet, so we've got time. Lisa

No Way!!! I have seen too many meds prescribed for kids and a few years later, they turn around and pull them. The problem that seems to happen is that they are tested by/for adults and then docs give to kids when they have never been tested for kids. My daughter is autistic and many meds were recommended when she was younger and we did tons of research and slowly over the years we would see neg reports on these same drugs that we had turned down for her. FYI, she learned coping skills instead of medicating which worked out better for her in the long run. This just makes me nervous as I don't think it has been tested enough in the ages they recommend it for. Hopefully the shots will turn out to be a real benefit, but we will not get our daughters them until it has a longer track/testing record. |

Our 3 daughters will be getting this shot. I have a couple more years with my oldest so the studies then will be more informative and have alot more case studies to back them up. But, we do like what we've seen so far. We have discussed this with our pediatrician and our pastor, both agree that this is a good idea. I would love to think that my DDs will be virgins until they get married but, I can't control that choice for them. And even if they are virgins, there is no certainty that their spouse will be a virgin. Also, we are not even discussing the horrid possibility that someone could force themselves on one of our DDs.

My dd only 11 and the dr. gave me the information on the HPV shot and told me that she likes to give to girls at 13. So I have two years but I am sure that I will be letting her get the shot. My dd did get the meningococcal vaccine at 11. |

If I had a daughter, I wouldn't get her the vaccine. It bothers me when a product is put on the market and it is basically pushed into the public's minds as being THE thing to do. What happens if a few years down the road it's discovered that it causes horrible side effects and problems with these young girls? My daughter definitely wouldn't be a guinea pig for this drug company.

Also, there are many strains of HPV and it only protects against two and you have to get it BEFORE the first sexual experience. That's very important too or it can acivate the virus. I read some of this on the drugs website, the cdc site, etc... And don't forget it's not a lifelong protection. What do they do when the protection wears off? I read somewhere it was for 36 months!
