A 12 year old was hit by a train and killed by my house

Sorry I dont know how to link but if you go to THNT.com you can see the story.
I feel so bad for the girls parents . according to the article she along with her friends were playing on the tracks Now this station just has 2 platforms which arent that big to begin with. I was told by neighbors that it was said that the kids were playing chicken with the trains for a few hours before the accident hapend and a cop came and made them leave which they did, then returned A few poeople have also said that its NJ Transits fault cause kids have been playing there for years... there are signs all over that say keep off tracks etc. IMO and I dont mean this in a mean or nasty way but shouldnt the parents be responisble for knowing where their kids are ??? I have a 12 year old and I call her constantly to see where she is. I feel bad for the conductor because he did all he could and now he has to live with what happend when he clearly was not at fault.

No matter who is at fault, this is very sad......I can't imagine what the family must be feeling right now.

I feel sorry for the family, however... I disagree that it is NJT's fault the girl died---it is the responsibility of the parent to know what their minor children are doing.

my dh works for the railroad and having an accident and killing someone is the worst thing that a conductor can do in his life.it will haunt him for the rest of his life.a train is not like a car where you can stop it on a dime .it takes a long time fo rthe train to stop .imgaine yoruself seeing a child on the road and knowing fully that you will hit no matter what,no way for you to stop in time....

It is ablsolutely horrific what happened!

how about blaming the parents who do not know where their children are?or didn;t teach them to stay off the tracks?
how about blaming the cops who didn't come back to check on them(ok ,they have more pressing things to do of course, and I do not say it in a sarcastic way!!)
how about blaming the city who doesn;'t have anything more interesting for the kids to do on a hot summer day?
how about simply putting the blame on the children who knew better ,who were warned by teh police, who were warned by the signs posted there?

bu in no way blaming the NJT ,the conductor was doing is job......

Parents mourn for their daughter's mistake

A lot of trajedies occur because of POOR parenting. Poor parenting usually results in their children not knowing better. For instance: knowing not to speed in their car, knowing better than to do drugs, knowing better to abstain from having sex, knowing better to NOT play on train tracks. I think you get the message.

In this instance, yes, the parents are somewhat at fault for not knowing their daughter's whereabouts, but ultimately, it was the girls own fault that she died. SHE made the mistake of being on the tracks in the first place. The parent's CAN be faulted here for not telling her to stay off the tracks, but nowadays parents should know that they have to keep their children on a tight leash moreso than ever.

My dad and brother are engineers for Conrail and Norfolk and Southern, and they have both been involved in fatal car/pedestrian vs. train accidents. It truly scars them for life. My poor brother's last accident was horrific and it was someone who was well known in this area who died. She was talking on her cell phone and blew through the flashing lights and of course there was nothing he could do. The worst of it was that she was on the phone to her husband who showed up minutes later to see everything and blame the railroad crew. My brother still wakes up with nightmares...the woman looked him right in the eye when he hit her...

In 99% of the cases it is never the railroads fault...unless there is a malfuctioning signal and even then and observant driver can hear the whistle. Yet in their grief families want and need to blame someone. My dad was sued for the death of a young teen even though there was a suicide note in the car.

There is something the town can do and the railroad safety commision will assist with. In areas where there is a lot of trespassing activity, they will send out education teams to the schools to alert the kids of the dangers. They have programs tailored to all age groups. The cities can install security camera's in the area to watch for kids playing near the tracks and send someone out to pick the trespassing kids up and haul their butts to the police station for their parents to deal with. Residents must stand behind the police 100% in enforcing a swift and severe punishment for kids who play chicken with their lives. In this case if the police officer who told them to leave the area had only hauled all their butts down to the station and charged their parents with neglect and fined them the girl might still be alive.

My heart goes out to all the parties involved and hopefully someone will jump at this opportunity to bring change to the area so this girl's death will not be in vain...
